Stop, drop and nap

I think we can learn a thing or two about self-care and relaxation from our pets. When cats get tired, they stop, drop, and nap. They devote time and attention to themselves — Knuckles licks his fur, and my parrot Zerby preens his feathers — in a way that us human-folk often neglect when it comes to our bodies and minds.

I had a good chuckle when I first spotted this article, I was observing my 4 week old kittens. I have had feline furballz pretty my whole life, but I have never had them since birth. I have been fascinated watching them grow and learn new things. What caught me after reading this article, cats really do "stop, drop, and nap," especially kittens. Who knew?

Normally I don't nap, but lately I have been finding that I have been needing a power nap every now an again. Not sure if it's my new meds or the fact my diabetes has been giving me fits. For relaxation, you are reading it. Cooking is my preening so to speak. Nothing like a good meal to round out a day.
And we should get ourselves excited about the simple things in life. There are plenty of simple “purple ribbons” out there for us to bat, chew, and pounce on.

I have no clue what my "purple ribbon" would be at teh moment. Maybe watching my kittens grow. I find myself stopping to just watch them. They're are cute little buggers and they make me laugh and smile. I find myself spending inordinate amounts of time jst laying on my bed and observing their antics. Which now includes climbing onto the bed whilst I be sleeping and playing with my feet. Or trying to climb my bare legs like a tree. One of the furballz is fascinated by my big toe and has taken a liking to biting it (which btw is not a pleasant sensation when the teeth attacking you are like needles.)

So I guess in my own way I do "stop, drop and nap" just not a spontaneously as my cats.

3000 years old and still relevant

This is a follow-up to my post Ancient Texts #1: Instructions of Šhuruppak . Below is a list of "instructions" I found to still be relevant today:

9-20 You should not vouch for someone: that man will have a hold on you; and you yourself, you should not let somebody vouch for you (1 ms. adds:: that man will despise (?) you).

2-27 You should not loiter about where there is a quarrel; you should not let the quarrel make you a witness. You should not let (?) yourself ...... in a quarrel. You should not cause a quarrel; ....... ...... the gate of the palace ....... Stand aside from a quarrel, ...... you should not take (?) another road.

35-38 You should not pick a quarrel; you should not disgrace yourself. You should not ...... lies; ....... You should not boast; then your words will be trusted. You should not deliberate for too long (?); you cannot bear ...... glances.

42-43 You should not speak improperly; later it will lay a trap for you.

65-66 The eyes of the slanderer always move around as shiftily as a spindle. You should never remain in his presence; his intentions (?) should not be allowed to have an effect (?) on you.

126 You should not pass judgment when you drink beer.

170-171 Fate is a wet bank; it can make one slip.

175-176 You should not work using only your eyes; you will not multiply your possessions using only your mouth.

177 The negligent one ruins (?) his family.

202-203 A loving heart maintains a family; a hateful heart destroys a family.

Disgusting

Yesterday (9/21/2011) I came home from work found this video posted to my wall. Not quite understanding at first I did a little digging,,,I wish I hadn't. I do not know this boy or his family, but I wish I had. What struck me was this is MY home turf, I am from western NY and proud of it. To find out that this disgusting action is occurring in the area I was raised about made me puke. Watch this video, then read the news article that follows. If it doesn't piss you off, then nothing will.

Here's the link to the original story as reported by the Buffalo News,,,this is fucking pathetic,,,I so wish kids did not have to go through any of this, think it's about time us LGBT adults start standing up, OUT and PROUD to help these kids,,,to any bigots out there,,,FUCK YOU you assholes you aren't worth the cost of the paper I use to wipe my ass with,,,this has got to stop people.

Teenager struggled with bullying before taking his life

And for all you morons out there, to save you some time since you probably don't know what a bigot is, read the following:

A bigot is a person obstinately or intolerantly is devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices, especially one exhibiting intolerance, and animosity toward those of differing beliefs. The predominant usage in modern English refers to persons hostile to those of differing sex, race, ethnicity, religion or spirituality, nationality, language, inter-regional prejudice, gender and sexual orientation, homelessness, various medical disorders particularly behavioral disorders and addictive disorders. Forms of bigotry may have a related ideology or world views. (from Wikipedia)

NOT a religious issue

When I first saw the headline to this article it struck me as odd. So a PRIVATE individual, put a cross on her property--whatever floats her boat. BUT 25 feet tall with "blood stains" be a bit much. It will be interesting to see how this situation plays out since it is not a church/state issue, but a local zoning issue.

Simply put, I pity the local zoning board because I think they are going to be in a pickle no matter how they rule. Have to remember that it comes down to what laws are currently on-the-books. This is not a religious issue so don't make it one.

My only question, how long has this cross been in her yard? Is it a recent addition or has it been there for some time? And why the front yard? Simple solution make it smaller (thereby negating the zoning issues if size alone is the problem) or move it to the privacy of her back yard where she can still, "express her devotion to her Catholic faith"
"I don't understand what my neighbors are so upset about," the 72-year-old told the newspaper. "This cross isn't hurting anyone."
Maybe it's an eyesore bringing unwarranted attention to the neighborhood that is unwelcome. Just a guess on my part.

You are what you eat

We’ve all heard about “mood foods” that can promote wellness for people with bipolar and depression,,,[b]ut it’s also important to think about how we eat. How we eat can have just as big an impact on our mood as what we eat, yet it often gets neglected in conversations about bipolar and food.

Being that I am also a type 2 diabetic (dx'd in 2007), what and when I eat is doubly important.

When I was first diagnosed with bipolar (1992), my main goal was to get my sanity back (if there was/is such a thing). After about 2-3 years I began to realize that there may be a link between the foods I ate and how my illness progressed. As a former athlete, I had always been mindful of what I ate so making this leap didn't seem so off-beat at the time. This was back in 1995/6 so the food-body connection was just beginning to come to a forefront in many other areas, especially in regards to the medical field as a whole. I never found any definitive literature concerning said topic, but it was a conclusion I came to of my own doing.

First to go was caffeine and lower sugar intake. (Regretfully my caffeine intake is back to pre-diagnosis levels and to be honest I don't know if it's a good thing or bad.) Next was weaning off my vegan diet, allegedly I wasn't getting enough protein (or so it was thought). I didn't jump right into being a carnivore, I gradually began to add seafood, chicken, and some turkey products. Beef and pork came much later; even today, it is very seldom. I still do not like the taste of beef and pork sometimes messes with my belly. Every now and again, I do like a nice rib eye, but expensive. (Flash forward 15+ years, I'm now trying to get back to my vegan diet, tho where I currently live is making it difficult; this is due more to health issues and weight gain.)

If you haven’t checked the PI sheet for your medication in a while, have a look. There might be a food-related instruction you’ve been forgetting.

Thankfully this has never been an issue for me, even when I was on lithium. Growing up in a no-salt household my sodium intake was already low. But I do know for individuals, food/med combination is an issue.

I am single at the moment, and plan on staying that way, so how I eat is a bit of a reflection on who I am. I work 2 jobs, my primary FT job is 3rd shift, so I attempt to sleep during the day. My body tells me when to sleep and when not to, if I am tired I sleep if not, I don't. This odd schedule has made eating and enjoying my meals a challenge. Throw in being diabetic, well I think you catch my drift,,,BUT one thing I do enjoy is cooking (altho it is getting a bit boring just cooking for myself,,,lol). Cooking is my passion, nothing gives me more pleasure than making a decent meal for myself. I do have some ole standbys that I can put together when need be, but finding something new and different flavors is relaxing.

The only downside, I eat whilst playing on my puter. I don't have TV and my only furniture besides a dresser, is my bed. Not the most inviting atmosphere to eat in. But what I eat and how I prepare it is the most important detail, that is one thing that will never get skimped on. As my situation changes and I am able to acquire more stuff (ie. furniture) my meal habits, I hope, will reflect that.

The only medication I am on is for my diabetes. If I had my way I wouldn't be on them either, but diet and exercise did not work for me. So popping pills is my only recourse. My decision to not take medications for my bipolar was made over the course of 2-3 yrs of continued weight gain that was beginning to affect my health in other ways. I went from a 164 pound former athlete to 268 pound ex athlete with chronic pain; all within 6 months of starting psychotropic medications. For 10 yrs, I struggled to lose that excess weight but finally gave up. After consulting with my medical doctors, I told them I wanted off my meds. My surgically reconstructed knees could not handle the weight and I was miserable.

For two years I weaned of my medication. I had to educate myself and learn new ways of controlling my hyper mania (depression was not so much an issue for me). I had to monitor all aspects of my waking life to see what influenced my body. And yes, what I ate did have an impact. Hence the reduction in caffeine and sugar and increase in meat proteins.

I have been med free since 2000, up to my health issues of the last 18 months, I had lost 96 pounds (regretfully I had but 52 pounds back on, of which 18 have again gone bye bye). So I can't say what food should/shouldn't be combined with medication. But the author makes a clear point: talk to your doctor, your pharmacist, and read any pertinent information concerning what medications you take.

I already mentioned a bit about (my) eating habits previously, but a point that I didn't make clear, that the author points out is important:
Being aware of how your eating habits correlate to your mood can be extremely helpful in heading off bipolar symptoms. If you’ve never given much thought to it before, try keeping a food journal for several weeks. Keep a record of when you ate, what you ate, and how you felt throughout the day. After a month or so of record-keeping, you might discover patterns you didn’t know were there.

I don't go quite to this extreme any more, but I have always kept a cooking journal. It records my shopping lists, new recipes I've tried, and what modifications I have made to accommodate my needs. For those that may want to explore the food/mood connection, I would definitely recommend you follow this step. You may be surprised by the results.

One suggestion I would make that I am surprised the author didn't make, STAY OFF OF THE PRE-PACKAGED, OUT OF THE BOX, PROCESSED FOOD!! I can't stress this enough. Dump the junk and eat fresh. One it's cheaper, and two it's healthier. I will admit that I do use some pre-packaged items (mostly side items like mac n cheese, mashed potatoes, etc.), I have no choice at the moment as I do not have a stove, so meal prep is challenging. I have a decent toaster oven, a single burner hot plate, and a not so great microwave (but it does what I need it to do). Making anything that takes more than one pot is a bitch, and time is issue some days. So at the moment I am experimenting with some food items, trying to find the best fit for my circumstances. But I always look at what ingredients are in the package and go for the best nutritional value.

[Since I'm on this topic a good site that I sometimes utilize when looking for recipes--Supercook. It is a recipe search engine based on what food items you have on hand. I hate to waste food and this site is a good one for using what you already have on hand.]

As I mentioned, depression has not been a primary issue for me. That does not mean I don't suffer from it but the severity for me is not quite as devastating as for others. I mostly have issues with hyper mania, preventing full blown mania, and well not going psychotic were I like to test the theory of gravity. Not to make light of the issue, a depressive state might be a welcomed relief. (I should be careful what I hope for, but my point is I am always on the go, constantly moving, my brain never stops, sleep is all screwed up, and I babble--can you tell.)

The few times that I have had a major depressive bout, it sucked. I'm not sure about others, but the last thing I wanted to do is eat. Maybe because I'm a bit more attentive to my eating, or that I do not keep junk foods in my apartment, I don't suffer from blues binging. But the author does bring up a good point:
When you’re depressed, the best way to eat is to sit down, take your time, and have healthy meals at regular intervals. Not only will this keep your blood sugar more stable throughout the day, but it can give you a sense of well-being and self-worth that you just don’t get from snarfling cookies right out of the box. Not that there’s anything wrong with eating a cookie.

I keep lots of fresh veggies on hand so if I get the urge to munch, I munch. And yes I do cheat. It's a learning process and I'm still learning.

The final two tips mentioned by the author I covered previously so I won't rehash too much. Weight gain is a nasty side affect and a daily battle. Regretfully I was hit hard, and my body just couldn't handle it. I would not change anything, at the time the information and medications available where the best there was. I am alive because of them. My only concern get your blood sugars tested and monitored for diabetes. I am diabetic because of the medications I was taking. This applies to ANYONE taking psyche meds. I can't stress this enough, but it still would not make me change anything, my life is that important to me.

"It’s much easier to keep bipolar under control when your life has a steady rhythm."

Ain't that the truth!! If my life gets chaotic, all bets are off. One thing I have discovered over the course of my battle is I need to keep a regular schedule; in my case as close to regular as I can get. I am a creature of habit, any drastic changes will throw me off balance. I get stuck in a loop of needing sleep but unable too and that is a dangerous game for me. The less sleep I get the more manic I become, and so on,,,So now I let my body tell me what it needs.

One thing to keep in mind with any illness,,,you have an illness it does not have you. You must take control. I can't stress this enough and I have mentioned it in other posts educate yourself. Learn, baby learn!!

On a lighter note,,,

This is freaking hilarious,,,originally found on Yahoo!

Seizures, drugs, drowning and a dildo-head,,,,take your pick

I have been fairly quiet about this case for good reason,,,what the fuck are these two thinking? I don't know who is worse, mommy and daddy or the daughter. IMHO they are all lying and all need to rot in jail. Last week it was seizures, this week drug overdose, before that drowning. WTF people!!

And what is with Dr. dildo-head? He is a disgrace. Making a buck off this fiasco. He should loose his license. (Never liked him, never will. Just my opinion.)

And now you know why I haven't commented about this mess.

And this is being responsible how??

I thought it was our responsibility to care for our own future needs/events? By relying on "Jesus" and not focusing on future needs, how is this responsible? Maybe I am reading too much into this, but it is the first thought that came to mind when I saw all three of these signs within a week of each other. It's as if they are saying "no matter how irresponsible I am, I don't care. My imaginary friend will save my ass."

How is racking up thousands of dollar in credit card debt or spending to keep-up with-the-Jones responsible? I'm not being critical of those that have lost their jobs due to the economy or have medical bills that have out stripped their insurance coverage. I'm talking to those who spend to acquire their wants whilst ignoring their needs, present and future.

We all know that the economy is struggling and may possibly get worse, wouldn't we be wise to plan for that? Isn't that what personal responsibility is? You can not care for others if you do not first know how to care for yourself. Further, when you truly learn to be responsible for yourself you learn it is in your best interest to be a good steward of others and the world around you.

Without personal responsibility you can never truly appreciate the rewards of accomplishment and you only experience life as a victim. Entitlement is the end result.

Does anyone really listen to this guy,,,seriously??

I'm going to go out on a limb here and ask if maybe, just maybe, this is being taken out of context?? But knowing Mr. Pat it's probably not. And he is the first to defend the sanctity of marriage from us gays and lesbian WTF. Me thinks dude needs to re-evaluate and read his Bile,,,I mean Bible. Or is he just cherry-picking the good stuff again?

And the viewer that called for advice concerning his friend, what's the point?? He's already screwing some other chick or at least thinking about it and needs the guilt taken away. Well ya better get down and pray to your imaginary friend you scumsucker.

And yes this is a sore spot for me. I just recently lost my best friend to cancer. Yes, her partner, her wife, and her had difficulties, but they stuck together till the end. No throwing in the towel because of her illness. So to read of some idiot bullshit minister/politician saying go ahead and throw your wife away is a bit unnerving.

My parents have been married 56 yrs, they have been through thick and thin together. A few years ago my mother became very ill, I sat and watched as my father spent everyday, all day by her side; only leaving to eat and sleep. I have no clue if my mom was aware he was there or not, I assuming she did as she was not comatose. Would Mr. go-ahead-and-cheat-on-your-ailing-wife tell my dad to go find another woman? Or better yet (as one commenter asked), what would he say to a woman in the same boat? I bet ya $10 he would say that "the marriage vows are sacred and must be upheld no matter what."

What a fuckstain he is,,,UGH!!!

A flop??

They called this "experiment" a flop, but was it? I am a strong believer that music soothes the savaged soul. It would be interesting to know if the exposure to the music had any effects on the remainder of the commuters day as a whole. At least subconsciously.

I was thinking, Omigosh, what kind of a city do I live in that this could happen?"

One mountain at a time

I am not sure as to why this article piqued my interest. Maybe the fact that the author captured the essence of the people and the lands they live(d) on. It's a good read but disheartening at the same time.

I do not have the necessary knowledge or understanding of the mining industry or the regulations. So to comment on that aspect would be unfair. But, if what is presented in this article is accurate, I can foresee a slow death of the natural beauty of our great nation.

The Good Book,,,I want it

I just added this book to my wish list (which keeps growing instead of getting smaller). If anything it will be a great resource. But I am curious as to how Grayling organized this work.

As to the philosophy behind it:
I noticed there is quite a contrast between those philosophies that derive from religious inspiration and those that derive from a humanist perspective,,,When you contrast those philosophies with the great young religions,,,I saw the humanist-derived ethical outlooks tended to take their start from the most generous view of human nature, and the belief that human life is very short, and we must understand how to make good lives for ourselves,,,[w]hereas religious systems premise themselves on relationships between man and deity.

And they know this how??

What makes this any different than the shroud of Turin or the now debunked James ossuary,,,or the alleged earliest known Bible fragments now being questioned for authenticity? Don't get me wrong, I love to hear of archeological discoveries but to make such a bold claim seems a bit much.

I don't dispute the historicity of the OT, though in my opinion not accurate in any means by today's standards. And I don't dispute that Jesus may have existed. (My concerns with the biblical texts has to do with claims of divinity, revelation, and inspiration. I also have difficulty with the Abrahamic concept of God.) But, is the "church" that desperate that they will leap at any little fragment, and not consider the ramifications once proven wrong or debunked as fake?

Overall it's still an intriguing find but questionable conclusion.

My mind is changing

Back in January I posted a bit about my self and my where I stand on some issues. I mentioned that the "in God we trust" and "one nation under God" issues where not that important to me personally. I'd like to change that, and for good reason of which I will explain.

Through the course of my de-conversion I never gave much thought to issues that others within the non-theistic community felt important. It may be that because my journey took over 10 yrs (and still continues) and, was very personal; my outrage was more doctrinal and dogmatic. My questioning more philosophical (if that's the correct word to use). Many of my family and friends did not know that I was questioning my faith or that my world view was evolving; it was a solitary journey done with little external support. There were many nights of sitting alone looking for answers, my faith did not disappear quietly.

I digress a moment for reasons unknown, catharsis perhaps?

What made me realize the error in my thinking was the following podcast Podcast #118 – Dave Silverman (President, American Atheists). Overall nothing extraordinary was said; it wasn't until about half way through the podcast that Silverman said something that made me realize how wrong I have been.

I wont get into too much detail here, but the two of the court cases being discussed were the Kentucky Homeland Security lawsuit and the Utah Highway Patrol/Utah Highway Patrol Association's lawsuit. You can read more about them here and here.

What Silverman said I paraphrased below:

When these type of laws come into play, we have to fight them or they become precedent; the next steps will go further still. The Religious Right has been playing a game of baby steps since the 1950's when the phrase "one nation under God" was placed in the pledge and when "in God we trust" was placed on our money. Those few words are the bases of all these other laws because everyone thinks they are supposed to be there. These things have to be fought and fought on a regular basis, whenever the government endorses a religion by force, which is what they are doing. [The thought that crossed my mind when I heard this part of the podcast: "my god can beat up your god" which screams religious zealotry, isn't that what got us in the mess we are in to begin with?]

,,,if, as they state, the cross is NOT a christian symbol, ONLY being used as a SECULAR memorial applicable to ALL (known as secularization of the cross) then they (the state of Utah) do not have to be concerned with equal access or the first amendment; they can be placed wherever they want. These NOW secular monuments may be placed on public lands without constitutional issues.

{The gist of this case comes down to the using of deceased police officers as a shield so they can get the cross declared secular. As Silverman states, it is an ugly side of Christianity.]

If the state of Utah doesn't want to secularize the cross, they can allow other religious monuments or a different kind, if they do then our case is dead. The reason they won't do that is this case has nothing to do with fallen state troopers, but using dead troopers to protect their efforts to secularize the cross so they can put it on public land without worrying about constitutional issues.

[Another point that Silverman made was concerning criticism of recent lawsuits.]

These are valid and important, not useless lawsuits. They have ramifications, win or lose. If we lose, new law has been established to back up old practices. The battles must be chosen wisely.

Will I now become a citizen activist? Probably not. But it will make me pay attention to the world we live in.

[I highly recommend you give this cast a listen, a good primer on what the legal battles are all about.]

Can my blog posts get better?

It's a bit of a rhetorical question, and not one I am expecting a answer for. Altho any critique is welcome. As a wannabe writer, I am always looking for ways to improve my writing, whether it be how I write or the topics I choose to write about. If my writing improves it should follow that my blog will improve, at least I hope so.

As I spend more time with my blog, or attempt to (life has a way of interrupting), I find that I have been instinctively following what the author suggests. The only one I catch myself not following is #1, writing the headline first. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't.

As for the four remaining tips, it seems the natural thing to do. Especially for my longer entries.

So sad

Normally I wouldn't comment on a story such as this BUT it has hit a nerve with me for 2 reasons. First, I am a huge fan of hockey. I have been a fan of the Buffalo Sabres since, well, before they were even the Sabres; I love hockey and have since I was 3 years old. I played for many many years and probably would still be playing if I was physically able. One too many concussions ended my playing days.

The second reason, this is the 3rd death this summer to strike the NHL in the manner it did. Mental health issues are near and dear to my heart, I have bipolar disorder and struggle everyday. It breaks my heart to see another human being with so much to give lose that struggle.

Please my dear blog readers, if you know someone who struggles with depression, or any chronic illness be there for them. Let them know you care. Guide them to proper treatment and encourage them to get help. Educate yourself and others around you. These were men that in our minds "had it made" yet something went wrong.

To the Belak and Rypien families and all others who have lost friends or family in this manner, I wish you peace!! There are no easy answers as the 9" scar on my left forearm can attest too.

Ancient Texts #1: Instructions of Šhuruppak

Instructions of Šhuruppak

Also known as Instructions of Šuruppak son of Ubara-tutu (the Instructions); is considered a piece of Sumerian wisdom literature. Wisdom literature, in general, is characterized by sayings intended to teach about divinity and about virtue. The key principle of wisdom literature is that while techniques of traditional story-telling are used, books also presume to offer insight and wisdom about nature and reality. This type of literature was common in the Ancient Near East (ANE) with the most notable examples being found in the Bible [Book of Job, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Psalms, Song of Songs, Wisdom (also known as Wisdom of Solomon), Sirach (also known as Ben Sira or Ecclesiasticus)].

Dating back to circa 3000 BCE, the content of the Instructions concern itself with instructions that Shuruppak, the son of Ubara-Tutu gave to his son Zi-ud-sura:
"My son, let me give you instructions: you should pay attention! Zi-ud-sura, let me speak a word to you: you should pay attention! Do not neglect my instructions! Do not transgress the words I speak! The instructions of an old man are precious; you should comply with them!" (Lines 1-13)

By my understanding (of the readings done to prepare this post), the contents were passed on from the last king of Sumeria (Shuruppak) before the great deluge (commonly known as the Epic of Gilgamesh) and written down by his son (Zi-ud-sura), the first king after the deluge. The oldest known copy is the Abu Salabikh Tablet found near the site of ancient Nippur in Central Babylonia (now southern Iraq).

The complete text of the Instructions is said to be approximately 282 lines organized around three lists of instructions consisting of negative commands/prohibitions, positive commands, and conventional proverbs. For example: You should not play around with a married young woman: the slander could be serious. (Lines 32–34) Or a more practical piece of advice: You should not locate a field on a road; ....You should not make a well in your field: people will cause damage on it for you. (Lines 15–18)

There does not appear to be any set organization to the ordering to the passages, just a father instructing his son. Some scholars consider the Instructions to be a forerunner of the 10 Commandments:

3rd Commandment

  • Line 50--You should not curse strongly: it rebounds on you.

  • Ex 20:7--Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

  • Deut 5:11--Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain: for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

6th Commandment

  • Lines 252/53--You should not kill a ......, he is a child born by ....... You should not kill ...... like ......; you should not bind him.

  • Ex 20:13--Thou shalt not kill.

And some of the Proverbs of the Bible

Notice the similarity of the prefatory statement, many ANE wisdom texts are often addressed as advice to a son from a father. Compare the similarities with the following Proverbs to the first 75 lines of the Instructions:

Proverbs 6:1-5
My son, if thou be surety for thy friend, if thou hast stricken thy hand with a stranger, [2] Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth. [3] Do this now, my son, and deliver thyself, when thou art come into the hand of thy friend; go, humble thyself, and make sure thy friend. [4] Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids. [5] Deliver thyself as a roe from the hand of the hunter, and as a bird from the hand of the fowler.

Proverbs 7:21-27
[21] With her much fair speech she caused him to yield, with the flattering of her lips she forced him. [22] He goeth after her straightway, as an ox goeth to the slaughter, or as a fool to the correction of the stocks; [23] Till a dart strike through his liver; as a bird hasteth to the snare, and knoweth not that it is for his life. [24] Hearken unto me now therefore, O ye children, and attend to the words of my mouth. [25] Let not thine heart decline to her ways, go not astray in her paths. [26] For she hath cast down many wounded: yea, many strong men have been slain by her. [27] Her house is the way to hell, going down to the chambers of death.

Proverbs 22:26-27
[26] Be not thou one of them that strike hands, or of them that are sureties for debts. [27] If thou hast nothing to pay, why should he take away thy bed from under thee?

Proverbs 23:27-28
[27] For a whore is a deep ditch; and a strange woman is a narrow pit. [28] She also lieth in wait as for a prey, and increaseth the transgressors among men.

Although I couldn't find as much information as I would have liked concerning the Instructions, there is a wealth of information concerning wisdom literature as a whole. What is written here is an amalgamation of information I have found. By no means is this information original, I take no credit for it. I hope you find this bit of history as intriguing as I have.

Here is a list of sources I used in putting this piece together (plus many more):

My new quest

I was bored one day and on a whim typed "ancient literature" into my search engine of choice. What came up was an intriguing entry from Wikipedia--
a list of ancient text. So, being the nerd that I am, I started scanning through the list and came up with the idea of challenging myself to read the entire list AND then boring y'all with the incites I gleamed from learning more about the texts listed.

So my quest will begin with the Bronze Age. In particular the Summarian text, Instructions of Shuruppak and end with the Late Antiquity period of the 5th century (Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite: Celestial Hierarchy).

I have no idea where my reading will lead or what information I may find. Altho I do see another possible list to explore at a later time (early Medieval literature). I hope you will enjoy this adventure and would like to see y'all follow along in my readings.

I am going to do my best not to rely on Wikipedia, most likely the information listed will give me my basic outline. I will attempt to find as much original source material as possible, but do understand that this is a layman's attempt at learning from history. I know from past projects that many resources are not readily available, only bits and pieces (ie. Google books). Where possible I will link to whatever primary sources I may find and any other usual information that is available.

Enjoy!!

Difficult, impossible??

Altho I no longer consider myself to be a Christian I found the "news" reported in this article depressing. It is sad to see the the dogma and doctrine of my former church is getting in the way of social well being. It's almost pathetic.

BTW I was adopted through the Lutheran Service Society as an infant, so a part of me is still attached to them in an odd sort of way.

My take on the BIble #5

1:9 And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.

This implies that there is/was a single continent and a single ocean on the planet. In actuality there was, 250 million years ago, during the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras; it was the super continent Pangaea. Only dilemma the creation story within Genesis is only dated 6000-10,000 yrs ago.

Prior to the break-up, about 180 million years ago, Pangaea was a roughly C-shaped landmass that was spread across the equator. The Tethys Sea was enclosed within the resulting crescent; the vast ocean that surrounded Pangaea has been named Panthalassa, which means "all seas".

1:10 And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good.

Why does God keep checking to see that his creation was "good"?

1:11 And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.
1:12 And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

Not going to get into too much of a criticism but some points that come to mind:

  • Are Genesis 1 and 2 a continuous uniform story? Or are there two distinct scriptures (written many years apart, by two sources, with two differing emphases - physical vs. moral issues)?

  • Compare Gen 1:11-13, (27-31) with Genesis 2:4-7. Plants first or man first?

  • And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so .... And the evening and the morning were the third day...So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them...And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

    VS

These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth ... And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground. But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground. And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground.

  • Take a closer look at Genesis 1:11 (and 1:24). In these verses God does not create plants and animals directly. Is this a sign that Genesis is not as anti-evolution as some would have us believe?

  • And God said, Let the earth bring forth,,,

  • Just a side note, we still don't have a sun to regulate the climate(s) thereby making it impossible for plants to grow. If plants can't grow, how would they yield any seed(s)?

1:13 And the evening and the morning were the third day.

Once again, the Sun does not exist yet.
