While the Affordable Care Act would prevent insurers from denying coverage to anyone with a pre-existing condition beginning in 2014, Romney’s provision is far more limited — and would only protect Americans who already have coverage.

Famous Cave Paintings Might Not Be From Humans : NPR
The first European cave paintings are thought to have been made over 30,000 years ago. Most depict animals and hunters. Some of the eeriest are stencils of human hands, apparently made by blowing a spray of pigment over a hand held up to a wall.
But now scientists are suggesting those aren't human hands, at least in some caves in Spain.

Not Satisfied With Attacking Nuns, Catholic Bishops Go After Girl Scouts | Gender | AlterNet
I am finding the attention the the "bishops" seem to be paying the girls scouts fascinating,,,
The apparent goal of this exercise of "investigating" gender female persons is to set up and enforce a male-defined model of girlhood/womanhood. A Vatican-, or in this case, USCCB-launched investigation is what Sister Sandra Schneiders, IHM, calls the equivalent of a grand jury investigation. There is the presumption that something is wrong, not something right, that there is guilt to be uncovered, not virtue to be unleashed. What is wrong seems to be women and girls thinking for themselves and acting for the common good.
,,,What is really at issue here is that women and girls involved in the Girl Scouts do not ask permission of ecclesial men to live as responsible citizens of a global world.
,,,Both cases are based on long-term reporting by conservative Catholics, both lay and clerical, of the groups' supposed sins. This is a cottage industry that includes the Eternal Word Television Network and random ecclesial busybodies who apparently report to Rome and to the USCCB on a regular basis.
[,,,]
The bishops fretted in both cases about sex and gender, especially reproductive justice. The straw that broke the camel's back for the nuns was the support some of them showed for a more inclusive health care policy. For the Scouts, it was the organization's public acceptance of a transgender child into a Colorado troop.
[,,,]
The investigations are meant in large part to intimidate since they really don't have much of a direct impact. Intimidation happens in small ways -- a few nuns self-censor, the leaders of the Girl Scouts redact a few publications. But just as most nuns are going about their business undaunted,,,

David Barton's New Thesis: People Who Are on Welfare Don't Read the Bible
Have to agree with one commenter,,,"The truth is that the less control you have over your own life and the less power you have to make things go your way, the more likely you are to see God or Fate or some outside supernatural entity directing your destiny."
"Wouldn't it be interesting to do a study between those that are on welfare and see how much and how often they read the Bible. You know, if Booker T. Washington is right that Christianity and reading the Bible increases your desires and therefore your ability for hard work; if we take that as an axiom, does that mean that the people who are getting government assistance spend nearly no time in the Bible, therefore have no desire, and therefore no ability for hard work? I could go a lot of places with this. I would love to see this proven out in some kind of sociological study, but it makes perfect sense,,,"
[,,,]
He hasn’t established that this is true but he is already running ahead of himself and using the assumption that it is true as the basis for a further study, that people who read their Bibles and practice Christianity are less likely to be on welfare. Proving that people on welfare don’t read their Bibles isn’t going to prove Booker T. Washington’s thesis that Christianity and the Bible make you work harder. Those are two entirely different theses.
[,,,]
As it happens, Oxford University published a study in 2010,,,
The problem for Barton is that this study at least shows “individuals with high SES tend to report the lowest levels of belief in divine control.” In other words, in simplistic Bartonian terms it’s the people who are well off who don’t read their Bible.

In other words, some sociological work in this area has already been done and it doesn’t agree with Barton’s thesis that,,,

Exodus Rejects Being Labeled 'Reparative Therapy Organization'
Hmmm,,,really now,,,let's hope this is true,,,
Exodus International issued a clarification Tuesday to refute reports that it is a reparative therapy organization. The Christian group asserts that its main focus is not to change a person's sexual orientation.
"As an organization, we do not subscribe to therapies that make changing sexual orientation a main focus or goal," the statement reads.
[,,,]
"We believe in a 'gospel-centric' view, meaning that all people, regardless of individual life struggles, can experience freedom over the power of sin through a daily relationship with Jesus Christ, a commitment to scripture, and by being a part of a vibrant, transparent and relational community of believers found in the local church," Exodus states.

Counter-Apologetics Series Part III: Pascal’s Wager | An American Atheist
- It costs little or nothing to believe in God or to be a Christian.
- The possible consequence of not believing in God is eternal hell.
- Therefore, since the risk is enormous and the cost to negate it is slim or nothing, one should believe in God.
Counter-Apologetics Series Part III: Pascal’s Wager | An American Atheist
Counter-Apologetics Series Part II: Bandwagon argument / Argumentum ad populum | An American Atheist
Argumentum ad Populum, Latin for “argument to the people,” is a logical fallacy also known as “bandwagon argument,” or many other names. The argument essentially reads that since a majority (or indeed even all) of the people believe something to be true, therefore it is true, or likely to be true. A good example of the flaw of an argument of this type is the belief in a flat Earth. Many cultures, generally until Ancient Greece, and some cultures for a time after that, thought that the Earth was flat. The general majority of people in many cultures believed this, and later on the idea that the Earth was a sphere was proven. Sometimes a theist will answer, when defending the existence of God, that so many people believe in God – indeed a good deal of the world believes in the monotheistic, even Abrahamic God – that therefore his/her belief is justified. Put another way, “so many people in human history have believed in God, and even to this day! They can’t all be wrong!”

Counter-Apologetics Series Part 1: Introduction, Burden of Proof, Scales of Evidence, and Absence of Evidence | An American Atheist
Historically, apologetics has come to mean a defense of religion, or arguments for the existence of God. The big question for why one is an atheist is, why don’t you believe in God? And, of course, the proper question is not why one does not believe but rather: why does one believe in God? This seems unfair to some religious people — why do we have to defend our claim? You are the atheists trying to bother everyone and tell them what to think! That is not how claims work. The one making the claim must prove it so this series seeks to shed light on each of the defenses of the claim of God’s existence. Apologetics attempts to answer this question. Whether or not there is evidence for God is a separate issue,,,
Absence of evidence does not prove that a thing does not exist.

The Cro Magnon Religion
Some of the most familiar finds that many associate with the Cro Magnon religion are the cave drawings found on the ceilings and walls of caves in France and Spain. It's evident that these drawings were completed in areas that were quite inaccessible to many, and so we assume that these locations represent a spiritual or sacred location. We can, however, be appreciative of the fact that these drawings have remained untouched and unblemished for thousands of years due to their remote location.
[,,,]
Although the cave drawings associated with the Cro Magnon are the most familiar to archaeologists and residents around the France and Spain, there were also several other forms of sculptures left behind. Figurines carved out of ivory, stone, and bone gave rise to the various gods venerated by the Cro Magnon people. One of the most familiar being the Venus of Willendorf, a figure depicting the human form. There exists no face, however it's hips, breasts, and stomach are greatly exaggerated. This female form indicates that these historic cultures often worshipped a fertility goddess.

Make no mistake, this is an ugly attempt by Ailes' paid hit men and women to preemptively smear a journalist, to rally a right-wing Twitter mob against him, and to try to intimidate him from documenting the truth about Ailes. And the early name-calling, centered on hollow allegations of wrongdoing, represent the dark trajectory this unfolding attack will likely to take.

Apparently, the newspaper-publishing wife of world-famous Roger Ailes is a "private citizen" who cannot be written about. That's a unique perspective. It's almost as unique as a publisher scrubbing her subscription list of paid customers she doesn't want buying her weekly.

Ancient Texts Part of Earliest Known Documents : Discovery News
Credited with the destruction of the temple of Solomon in 586 BCE, Nebuchadnezzar II was also responsible for sending the Jews into exile, according to the Bible.
The first Babylonian king to rule Egypt, he is also famous for building the legendary Hanging Gardens, one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world, and many temples all over Babylonia.
Calling himself the "great restorer and builder of holy places," he also reconstructed Etemenanki, a 7-story, almost 300-foot-high temple (also known as a ziggurat) dedicated to the god Marduk.
Biblical scholars believe that this temple may be the Tower of Babel mentioned in the Bible.

Last May, Stephen Hawking gave a talk at Google's Zeitgeist Conference in which he declared philosophy to be dead. In his book The Grand Design, Hawking went even further. "How can we understand the world in which we find ourselves? How does the universe behave? What is the nature of reality? Where did all this come from? Traditionally these were questions for philosophy, but philosophy is dead," Hawking wrote. "Philosophy has not kept up with modern developments in science, particularly physics."

My Take: How Thomas Jefferson’s secret Bible might have changed history – CNN Belief Blog - CNN.com Blogs
During most of his two terms in the White House, from 1801 to 1809, and for more than a decade afterward, Jefferson – the third U.S. president and the principal author of the Declaration of Independence – committed himself to a radical reinterpretation of the Gospels.
[,,,]
In Jefferson’s view, this revision represented a faithful record of Christ’s moral code, minus the miracles that the Enlightenment-era founder dismissed as historical mythmaking.
[,,,]
Jefferson was still working on his Bible during his presidency, so its theoretical publication wouldn’t have compromised his electability. But if the book had been made public after its final completion in 1820, when Jefferson had only six more years to live, it likely would have become one of the most controversial and influential religious works of early American history.
[,,,]
Jefferson’s minimalist approach to the Gospels reveals an attitude that he disclosed only privately, just months before his death: “I am of a sect by myself, as far as I know."

Is the King James Bible Inspired? | History of the King James Version | KJV
For the past several centuries since its creation in 1611, the King James Bible has been held up by devout Christians as an "inspired" and "inerrant" rendering into English, authorized by God himself. To this day, certain Fundamentalist Protestant Christians continue to believe this claim about the King James Version ("KJV"), regardless of the fact that the texts upon which it was based differ in many places from the earliest Greek manuscripts, which were not available during its translation.

The Bible may be the most revered book in America, but it’s also one of the most misquoted. Politicians, motivational speakers, coaches - all types of people - quote passages that actually have no place in the Bible, religious scholars say.

But people rarely challenge them because biblical ignorance is so pervasive that it even reaches groups of people who should know better, says Steve Bouma-Prediger, a religion professor at Hope College in Holland, Michigan.

Nietzsche and Atheism | An American Atheist
Nietzsche believed that Christianity grew out of the resentment, or ressentiment, of the weak in society – hence his famous phrase, “slave morality.” The genius of Christianity, according to Nietzsche, is its ability to take the will to power – which simply means the universal urge of man to express his spirit and impress himself upon the world – and turn it against itself.

In my parallel universe I didn't have to read this 3 times,,,
Parallel Universes & Quantum Mechanics | LifesLittleMysteries.com
One derivation of parallel universes comes from the kookiness of quantum mechanics. At subatomic scales, particles do not act in a concrete, there-or-not-there manner that we are accustomed to in our spatial environments. Instead, and bizarrely, particles possess various physical properties and occupy multiple positions. None of these characteristics can be known beyond a certain probability range until the particle is observed. [The Mysterious Physics of 7 Everyday Things]
Accordingly, particles exist in a fuzzy "wavefunction" of probable states. Although a measurement nails down one of these multiple possible states, it is thought that other possible values "branch off" into their own universes.
"Through quantum mechanics, there is an idea that there are many possible outcomes and those are represented in the wavefunction," Albrecht said. Some scientists regard those different outcomes as different parallel universes.

Pretty funky,,,I have a rudimentary understanding of the complexity of evolution but,,,,
The change from dinosaur to bird is one of those grand evolutionary shifts. The smart, quick theropod dinosaurs that gave rise to birds may have had feathers, but they did not fly and they certainly didn’t resemble birds today. Just think of a pigeon’s acrobatics. Or the legendary dive of the peregrine falcon, which can spot that pigeon from 3,000 feet and drop to earth in a 200-mile-an-hour swoop to strike it.

The Vedas, a collection of texts composed over 3,000 years ago in India, speak of a mythical sacred river called the Sarasvati from which the Hindu goddess of science and learning emerged. Hers was a river “surpassing in majesty and might all other waters.” But around 4,000 years ago, all was lost when climate change kicked in.
That is the conclusion of a group of geologists, geomorphologists, archaeologists and mathematicians who joined forces to answer a question that has dogged scholars for centuries: what became of the Indus civilization?

Earth’s Core - The Enigma 1,800 Miles Below Us - NYTimes.com
Geologists have long known that Earth’s core, some 1,800 miles beneath our feet, is a dense, chemically doped ball of iron roughly the size of Mars and every bit as alien. It’s a place where pressures bear down with the weight of 3.5 million atmospheres, like 3.5 million skies falling at once on your head, and where temperatures reach 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit — as hot as the surface of the Sun. It’s a place where the term “ironclad agreement” has no meaning, since iron can’t even agree with itself on what form to take. It’s a fluid, it’s a solid, it’s twisting and spiraling like liquid confetti.
[,,,]
Now it turns out that existing models of the core, for all their drama, may not be dramatic enough. Reporting recently in the journal Nature, Dario Alfè of University College London and his colleagues presented evidence that iron in the outer layers of the core is frittering away heat through the wasteful process called conduction at two to three times the rate of previous estimates.

Concerns Grow About Spent Fuel Rods at Fukushima Daiichi - NYTimes.com
Some outside experts have also worked to allay fears, saying that the fuel in the pool is now so old that it cannot generate enough heat to start the kind of accident that would allow radioactive material to escape.
But many Japanese scoff at those assurances and point out that even if the building is strong enough, which they question, the jury-rigged cooling system for the pool has already malfunctioned several times, including a 24-hour failure in April. Had the outages continued, they would have left the rods at risk of dangerous overheating. Government critics are especially concerned, since Tepco has said the soonest it could begin emptying the pool is late 2013, dashing hopes for earlier action.

In an interview Tuesday with the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano, Becciu said the stolen papers didn't just concern matters of internal church governance but represented the thoughts of people who in writing to the pope believed they were essentially speaking before God.
Then again ",,,essentially speaking before God" raised my ire,,,I'm sorry the pope is NOT god but yet, those writing to him did have their privacy violated,,,
"It's not just that the pope's papers were stolen, but that people who turned to him as the vicar of Christ have had their consciences violated," Becciu was quoted as saying.
Then I think of all the scandals concerning the children injured by priests and the subsequent cover-ups that reach all the way to the top,,,very confusing,,,I don't understand why all the secrecy what do they have to hide?
