Normally I wouldn't comment on a story such as this BUT it has hit a nerve with me for 2 reasons. First, I am a huge fan of hockey. I have been a fan of the Buffalo Sabres since, well, before they were even the Sabres; I love hockey and have since I was 3 years old. I played for many many years and probably would still be playing if I was physically able. One too many concussions ended my playing days.
The second reason, this is the 3rd death this summer to strike the NHL in the manner it did. Mental health issues are near and dear to my heart, I have bipolar disorder and struggle everyday. It breaks my heart to see another human being with so much to give lose that struggle.
Please my dear blog readers, if you know someone who struggles with depression, or any chronic illness be there for them. Let them know you care. Guide them to proper treatment and encourage them to get help. Educate yourself and others around you. These were men that in our minds "had it made" yet something went wrong.
To the Belak and Rypien families and all others who have lost friends or family in this manner, I wish you peace!! There are no easy answers as the 9" scar on my left forearm can attest too.
