Ted Cruz’s father: Same-sex marriage is about making government your God | The Raw Story

Pastor Rafael Cruz, father of Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) told the audience at a conservative conference on Saturday that marriage equality is part of a government conspiracy, the Des Moines Register reported.

“Socialism requires that government becomes your God,” the elder Cruz said to the crowd at the Family Leadership Summit in Ames, Iowa. “That’s why they have to destroy the concept of God. They have to destroy all loyalties except loyalty to government. That’s what’s behind homosexual marriage.”

“That same man who’d been talking about hope and change now was talking about how the rich were evil, how they oppressed the poor, how they needed to redistribute the wealth,” the Dallas Morning News quoted Cruz as saying.

Interesting, father Cruz is a minister, I am wondering though if he has ever read his Bible or if the words "spoken" by Christ are beyond his comprehension and understanding? The Gospels all teach and depict Christ repeatedly reaching out to those at the bottom of the social pyramid--poor people, women, Samaritans, lepers, children, prostitutes and tax collectors. Cruz senior rails against socialism but yet Christ was the ultimate socialist.

Consider the following from Luke 4:18-19 which in some ways could be taken as Christ's mission statement: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

But yet Jesus was also eager to accept people who were well-off, but he made clear that regardless of social position, all needed to repent. For this reason, he invited the rich young man to sell all of his possessions and give the proceeds to the poor. (Matthew 19:16-30, Luke 18:18-30, Mark 10:17-31)

Christ also commanded us to, Love our neighbor. But to Christ, the definition of neighbor was anyone who was/is in need, including social outcasts: But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind (Luke 14:13)

Or what about Christ's portrayal of the day of judgment, Jesus pictured people from all nations gathered before him, separated into "sheep" and "goats." (Matthew 25:31-46) To the sheep he says, "Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: For I was an hungered, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in,,," In their astonishment they ask, "When did we do that?" And he answers, "Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me." Conversely, to the goats he says, "Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: For I was an hungered, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink,,,
