Edward Carpenter, Collegiate School, at Oakland, shot himself dead

Although this incident was ruled accidental at the time of its happening September 11, 1859  I include it in the mix.  Very little is known of this incident other than a brief mention in the Sacramento Daily Union the following day:
The Accidental Shooting in Alameda

Edward Carpenter, a member of the Collegiate School, at Oakland, shot himself dead, by an accidental
discharge of his gun, on the San Antonio bridge, while ovt [sic] hunting, this morning.  Young Carpenter was the son of A.D.Carpenter, of Sacramento.  It is stated that the use of firearms is not permitted in this school, except at the special rquest of the parents or guardians of the boys.  the boys.  Young Carpenter had this liberty, and was accustomed to the use of his gun; but, by some means it was unexpectedly discharged in this instance, soas to lodge the load in his breast, causing instant death.
