Bryan College takes stand on creation that has professors worried for their jobs

Bryan College was founded on the back of the country’s most famous debate over creation and evolution.

And the biblical literalists, the stalwarts, the six-day creationists flocked here even when society began tipping toward a more scientific understanding of human origins, when Darwin, not Genesis, became the more convincing explanation for many.

But over the years, more diverse views on Genesis 1 and 2 crept in. Some professors, staff and students didn’t just identify as young-Earth creationists. Their views became more nuanced. They called themselves progressive evolutionists and theistic evolutionists and old-Earth creationists; they found ways to reconcile faith and science.

Now the administration is making a statement against these aberrations. The board of trustees is requiring professors and staff to sign a statement saying that they believe Adam and Eve were created in an instant by God and that humans shared no ancestry with other life forms. If they don’t sign, they fear that jobs could be on the line.

Alberta’s tar sands operation continues to undermine its own credibility, the latest blow being federal research firmly supporting suspicions of toxic chemicals leaking into groundwater and finding its way into the Athabasca River from tailings ponds. It bears mentioning that this is the “safe” operation that is seeking to use the proposed Keystone XL pipeline to transport crude tar sands oil from Alberta to Texas.

On Sunday morning I went to a church service for the first time in decades.

I was there as a community member to support Pastor Seth Pickens of Zion Hill Baptist church in South Los Angeles. A few days before, I’d received an urgent plea from Teka-Lark Fleming, publisher of the local Morningside Park Chronicle newspaper, encouraging progressive black folk to show up at Zion Hill in support of Seth’s pro-LGBTQ stance.

After publishing a column entitled “The 10 Reasons I Love LGBTQ folk” in Fleming’s paper, Pickens came under fire from church officials. The controversy erupted on the heels of internal criticism he’d received for performing a marriage ceremony for a lesbian couple last year.

Texas Republican official: Founding fathers would never allow ‘sodomites’ to marry

Texas Republicans are unrepentant after a prominent member of their caucus referred to same-sex couples as “sodomites” and said that the nation’s founders would be appalled that they are being allowed to marry.

According to Houston’s KHOU, Conservative Republicans of Texas president Dr. Steve Hotze made the bigoted remarks in a press release supporting Harris County Republican Party Chairman Jared Woodfill, who is running for re-election.

“Our Founding Fathers would be furious to find out that the Constitution was being interpreted to allow sodomites to marry,” wrote Hotze in a Republican Party fundraising letter.

Two Members of Notorious Kehoe Family Plead to Weapons Charges

A father-and-son team that’s fought the government, disregarded its laws and embraced violently white supremacist views for decades decided Friday not to take chances with an Arizona jury.

Instead of going to trial on multiple federal charges, Kirby K. Kehoe, 65, and his 37-year-old son, Cheyne, struck plea deals with federal prosecutors, with each pleading guilty to a single count before Magistrate Judge Michelle H. Burns. The elder Kehoe pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of firearms and ammunition, and his son to being a felon in possession of firearms.

The Kehoes are best known for the exploits of Cheyne Kehoe and his brother, Chevie, who is still serving a life term for his leadership of a terrorist cell called the Aryan Republican Army. Both were involved in shootouts with police, and Chevie led the gang in the torture-murder of a family of three, including an 8-year-old girl who was smothered to death after being shocked with a cattle prod.
