Alabama Republicans Seek to Instate Mandatory Prayer In Public Schools | DemoNews.org

Another look at Alabama's HB 318

In defense of the proposed bill, Speaker of the House Mike Hubbard, R-Auburn, says that Americans have traditionally misinterpreted the principle of separation of church and state.

"Sometimes we forget that separation of church and state was not to make sure we don’t have any references, because the founding fathers clearly did that, it just means that there cannot be a state sponsored religion and you can’t force a religion on anyone."
Hubbard failed to explain, however, how requiring students to spend 15 minutes each day on prayer does not constitute “forcing a religion on anyone.” Will each prayer focus on a different religion? Catholicism on Monday, Judaism on Tuesday, Islam on Wednesday, and so on? It’s probably safe to assume that this would not be the case.

But I guess Alabama legislators fear you might pray to the wrong god or use the time instead to think about other things, like your boyfriend or girlfriend.
