A Former Colonel Plans to Overthrow the U.S. Government on May 16 | Vocativ

Nearly every day in the nation’s capital, one group or another stands on the Washington Mall or in front of the White House, holding posters, protesting perceived government injustices.

Rallies against government activities are nothing new. In fact, you might say they’re as old as the American government itself.

But one set of protesters—a collective of radical neo-conservatives with links to major Tea Party groups—is planning an altogether different type of protest. The group, which calls itself Operation American Spring, plans to head to Washington, D.C., on May 16 to overthrow the government. They will stay there, they say, until President Obama and other top officials resign.

In other words: Riley’s group is planning an Arab Spring-style occupation of the Washington Mall that, he hopes, will cause Congress to stand up and force a change of the presidency. The 76-year-old Riley says between 1.2 million and 1.8 million are already mobilizing to flood Washington on the day for the march.

It’s kind of hard to see how Riley will muster anything close to that number of people. His own website, Patriots for America, one of the major message boards for the event, has fewer than 5,000 members.
