'El Safari' sentenced to life in prison for Munford murder - The Daily Home: News

Christopher Isaac “El Safari” Surles, 24, was found guilty of killing Matthew Howie, 19, in Munford in July 2012. According to Assistant District Attorney Christina Kilgore, Surles’ legal problems are not over yet.

Surles is a follower of the Sovereign Citizen movement. He represented himself during the murder trial, but questioned few witnesses and introduced little evidence on his own. Kilgore said he intends to represent himself in the prison contraband case as well.

She added that people who insist on representing themselves at trial cannot appeal on the grounds of inadequate counsel.

Sovereign citizen representing himself in Talladega County murder trial asks for judge’s recusal, jury’s dismissal
A 24-year-old sovereign citizen is representing himself in his Talladega County murder trial this week, according to The Daily Home.

Christopher Isaac Surles is on trial before Circuit Judge Bo Hollingsworth in the July 2012 death of 19-year-old Matthew Paul Howie.

Surles is among Alabama's hundreds of sovereign citizens, a group of people who believe they can decide which laws to follow and which to ignore. They also believe the federal government is illegitimate.

Assistant Talladega County District Attorney Christina Kilgore is prosecuting the case.

Surles asked no questions of potential jurors, did not address the facts of the case case during his opening statements, and did not cross-examine the witnesses for the prosecution, The Daily Home reported.

Court records show that Surles filed an "affidavit of fact" in open court Monday.

"I, Christopher Surles, In Proper Persona, do not give consent to the illegal/malicious trial, initiated and conducted by the Circuit Court of Talladega County, AL," the document states.

Surles also demanded that the judge recuse himself from the case and challenged the entire jury.
