Fire at Sarasota's gay nightclub 'Throb' officially ruled arson - Sarasota News | Mysuncoast.com and ABC 7: Local News

Investigators say new security camera footage of a fire at a gay night-club in Sarasota shows the fire was caused by an arsonist still on the loose.

The Sarasota Sheriffs department and State Fire Marshal released this security footage of the arsonist starting the fire.

A tan-skinned man in a dark shirt can be seen approaching the club's front door with a gas can, which he ignites with a cigarette moments later. It's not long before flames engulf the entrance.

Wally O'Connor lives on eight acres was alerted to the fire by his dog on a morning walk.

When the flames cleared, Throb had suffered $10,000 in fire and water damage. Owner Brian Zickafoose wasted no time making repairs, and opened the club for a regular Sunday evening just hours after the flames had been put out.

Zickafoose told us this was the first targeted incident in five years, and he wouldn't be surprised if the recent controversy surrounding gay marriage played a role.

The fire marshal says arson is currently the only charge, and any hate crime charges will be assessed once the suspect is caught.
