Undercover investigation catches registered sex offender at church - Morganton.com | The News Herald: News

A registered sex offender living in Hickory was arrested after leading a Burke County church service Sunday.

Kenneth Lee Cagle, 53, of Rhoney School Road in Hickory, was charged with felony sex offender employment violation and being on premises with children, according to his arrest warrant.

Cagle previously was convicted of felony third-degree sexual exploitation of a minor in 2003, according to the North Carolina Department of Public Safety online offender search. This offense refers to possession of child pornography, according to state law.

Investigators had been monitoring Cagle’s activities for at least two months before the arrest, according to a release from the Burke County Sheriff’s Office. Several private sources in the community indicated that Cagle had been maintaining a church within his home, and was attempting to gain funds to open a church in Burke County.

Cagle raised those funds, and began operating as a leader within a newly-opened church, according to the release.

The warrant described his position as one where he “operated a church facility where minors were present,” and said his “responsibilities or activities included instruction, supervision or care” of those minors.
