An Egyptian Teenager Died During An Illegal Female Genital Mutilation Surgery—And She Isn't Alone - SELF

On May 31, a 17-year-old Egyptian girl, Mayar Mohamed Mousa, died after undergoing an illegal surgery. She and her twin sister underwent a prohibited procedure known as female genital mutilation (FGM). Her sister survived the surgery, but Mayar, who officials believe may have had blood clotting issues, did not. Though the death of any teenager is tragic, Mousa’s passing has gained attention for another reason: Female genital mutilation is harmful and illegal, but in many countries, people keep doing it.
