Many preschools ruined by panic created by 1980s McMartin fiction - NY Daily News

On Aug. 12, she called police to say that her son had been sodomized by a teacher at the McMartin preschool, the daycare he had been attending for about two weeks.

Johnson told investigators that her son said a McMartin teacher named Ray taught him to play doctor and forced him to wear women’s clothes. Other children, she said, had told their parents stories of similar abuse.

Ray Buckey, 25, was the only male teacher there. He was the grandson of Virginia McMartin, 76, who had founded the school in 1966. By 1983, Peggy McMartin Buckey, Virginia’s daughter and Ray’s mother, was in charge of the school, which, until Johnson’s accusation, had a sterling reputation.

The same could not be said of Johnson. She was a deeply troubled woman, an alcoholic with a history of mental illness who was going through an ugly divorce at the time.
