Laguna Beach police arrest man who admitted to selling pot as a church sacrament – Orange County Register

A 31-year-old Irvine man was arrested after being suspected of using a church as a front for a marijuana dispensary, police said Tuesday, Jan. 23.

The arrest came after Laguna Beach police were alerted by a resident Jan. 12 of a possible marijuana dispensary in the 900 block of Glenneyre Street, said Sgt. Jim Cota. The resident reported a heavy smell of marijuana and observed people going in an out of the building with white bags, Cota said.

Officers went to the business, called the Divine Church of Gardens — Laguna Beach, and found Lucas Dichiara who told them he had been volunteering at the church for three days and was selling sacraments, Cota said.

Commercial cultivation, distribution and sale of recreational cannabis, which California legalized with the passage of Prop. 64, is not allowed in Laguna Beach. The Adult Use of Marijuana Act allows cities to ban marijuana businesses, which Laguna Beach city leaders voted to do in April 2017.
