A former Marrero pastor charged with raping and molesting several
young girls in the 1990s pleaded guilty Monday (July 9), and is
scheduled to be sentenced to 20 years in prison later this month.
Sherman R. Smith,
58, pleaded guilty to an amended charge of second-degree rape,
according to District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro's office. Smith also
pleaded guilty as charged to one count of aggravated incest, two counts
of sexual battery and five counts of indecent behavior with juveniles
younger than 13.
As part of a plea deal approved by the victims, Criminal District
Judge Karen Herman ordered Smith's sentences to be served concurrently.
