Middle school dean charged in teen sex case is a Roman Catholic priest on ‘inactive leave’ – Orange County Register

I suspect that this allegation is going to have far reaching implications.  What I don't get, after tracking these case for 8 years, is how the church (any church) in good conscience could allow such an individual to be hired elsewhere.  Obviously "running his fingerprints" is not enough.

There must be a means that creeps such as these can be red-flagged.  And yes, I am well aware that in the hiring process one is ham-strung by do and donts, but when kids lives and futures are at stake a better method need devised.  (In this particular case, based on published reports, it appears while Banning did what it was legally supposed to do, due diligence does not appear to have occurred.)

A Banning school administrator who pleaded not guilty to charges that he tried to lure a minor to have sex is on “inactive leave” as a Roman Catholic priest, the Los Angeles Archdiocese said Thursday.

Charles Patrick Mayer, 55, of Menifee, is “not in ministry and living privately, since September of 2000 due to a failure to adhere to Archdiocesan policies concerning interaction with youth and young adults. The Archdiocese has no record of allegations of sexual misconduct by Charles Mayer,” the statement read.

Mayer was arrested last weekend after San Bernardino County Sheriff’s investigators said he sent nude photos of himself to someone he thought was a 14-year-old boy he had met online. It was, in fact, an account run by undercover police.
