I have posted about Leo Grand and Patrick McConlogue before. Leo is a homeless man that McConlogue approached and offered to teach him coding. He then went on to write a carpool organizing app Trees for Cars, This current story fills in some gaps in the story I was unaware of and makes it an even better story,,,

The project took longer than two months, but both men were committed, even through numerous challenges. In October, it became too cold to continue working outside and the duo received support from an unexpected source: Princeton Review founder John Katzman, McConlogue’s boss. Katzman not only allowed the two to continue their work at the office of his new educational search engine company – Noodle – but he also allowed McConlogue to work with Grand on Trees for Cars full-time for five weeks.

The app launched on Dec. 10, but this journey doesn’t end with the app. McConlogue is developing his mentorship program, with more than 150 programmers from around the world signed up to spend an hour every day teaching coding.

Yesterday, we got to sit down the the creators of www.TurnToTech.io NYC, a comprehensive three month developer program. After talking it over today, Leo has decided to return to school at TurnToTech for the next 3-6 months to really hone his engineering schools and to top it off they offered a full scholarship to the program. I respect the founder Aditya, who is a brilliant man but also a man of character. He has a rare passion for teaching and not only is he running the program but he is also a teacher.

Homeless US programmer creates social app which can help lower gas emissions in NYC — RT USA

Last month I posted a story about Patrick McConlogue, a software engineer in New York City who made a potentially life-changing proposal to a homeless man while walking to work one day. In the original story Leo Grand, the homeless man learning to code, spoke of creating an app. Well as of yesterday that app is a reality,,,

The result? An app named Trees for Cars, which attempts to help lower greenhouse gas emissions by connecting local users who’d be willing to carpool together. The driver chooses a meeting point, and the app then suggests nearby riders. If both the driver and riders accept each other’s invitations, they’ll be connected and can meet together for a carpool. The app also details how much carbon dioxide is saved by each ride, which encourages people to continue decreasing their carbon footprint.

Grand is hoping to rent his own apartment with the sales off the app, but while his story is certainly inspiring, it’s one of the few bright spots in New York City’s homeless epidemic. As RT reported on Tuesday, the number of homeless residents sleeping in city shelters each night has reached its highest level since the Great Depression in the 1930s, and it has increased by 69 percent since 2002.
