In 1963 Stanley Milgram was baffled by the atrocities of the Nazi regime so he developed an experiment to gain insight into the human tendency to obey authority (or perceived authority) and just how susceptible we are to doing the bidding of others. The following article looks again at Milgram (obedience vs disobedience) from a more "modern" context, mass consumerism.
One point that the author seems to leave out, not all of the participants who obeyed to the end experienced great moral conflict. Secondly, there were different versions of the experiment, including one where a second fake investigator was present, whose job was to disobey halfway through and refuse to continue.
Obedience to Corporate-State Authority Makes Consumer Society Increasingly Dangerous
Welcome to H&C,,, where I aggregate news of interest. Primary topics include abuse with "the church", LGBTQI+ issues, cults - including anti-vaxxers, and the Dominionist and Theocratic movements. Also of concern is the anti-science movement with interest in those that promote garbage like homeopathy, chiropractic and the like. I am an atheist and anti-theist who believes religious mythos must be die and a strong supporter of SOCAS.
