Inmate's letter says racism behind arson, murder | News | murfreesboropost.com

An arson-related murder could have been motivated by racism, according to court testimony.

John D. Carothers, who is charged with burning Robert Miller to death in a March 17 fire on North Maple Street, wrote a letter to a white supremacist group from jail in which he admitted to setting the victim on fire and saying he did it for race-related reasons. Miller died from burns to his head and torso seven days later at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, testimony showed.

“To my brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ our savior and Lord, My name is John D. Carothers and I believe the Bible is about white people and for white people. I am in Rutherford County jail for burning a black man. I set him on fire with lighter fluid poured on his head,” states the handwritten letter intercepted at the jail by the sheriff’s office. It also asks people to send him a study Bible.
