UPDATED::Former Boone pastor pleads guilty to sexual exploitation

UPDATE:: Former Boone pastor’s charges cause public concern for child safety
Former Grace Community Church Pastor Joel Waltz, 50, of Boone who was arrested after he allegedly sexually exploited a teenaged girl has plead guilty to lesser charges, according to court documentation back in 2017.

Waltz who was charged with sexual exploitation by a counselor or therapist, a class D felony, on March 13, 2017 was sentenced to 4 years in state prison, but served less than two year’s.

Now that he is less than a year out of prison, he is requesting permission onto school grounds.

Waltz, a registered sex offender, has been allowed access into certain Boone Community School District activates that his children will be involved.

The approval allowing Waltz on school grounds raised public outcry as the community feared for their children’s safety as parents jumped to social media to voice their concerns.
A former Boone pastor who was arrested after allegedly sexually exploiting a teenage girl and "grooming" her for several years has plead guilty to lesser charges, according to court documents.

Joel Waltz, 48, of Boone, was charged with sexual exploitation by a counselor or therapist, a class D felony, on March 13. He was booked into Story County Jail and posted bail on March 20. He was a pastor at Grace Community Church in Boone.

On Oct. 2, Waltz plead guilty to two counts of sexual exploitation by a counselor or therapist, an aggravated misdemeanor. In his written plea, Waltz admitted, "I kissed a person who I agree was emotionally dependent on me as a counselor. This kissing was for the purpose of arousing or satisfying my sexual desires. The events occurred when the person was under the age of 18."
