Shocking images show young Muslim boys beating themselves with sharp blades as part of the holy Day of Ashura.

Every year, Muslims all over the world take part in these bloody self-flagellation ceremonies to mark the tenth day of the Islamic calendar and to mourn the death of the Prophet Muhammad's grandson, Imam Husayn, at the Battle of Karbala.

Sunni Muslims celebrate it the date - which they refer to as the Day of Atonement - as the day Israelites were freed from the Pharaoh of Egypt.

Afghanistan probes 'poisoning' of 600 Herat schoolgirls - BBC News

Police in Afghanistan are investigating the suspected poisoning of hundreds of schoolgirls in Herat province.

About 600 students from different schools have been taken to hospital in the past two weeks, complaining of nausea, pain and shortness of breath.

It is not clear what caused the symptoms, although officials believe the girls may have inhaled a toxic gas.

Many schools in Afghanistan have come under attack in the past, with officials suspecting that militants opposed to women's education were behind the incidents.

An Afghan military interpreter denied refuge by Britain has been executed trying to reach the West.

Known to the UK soldiers he served with as Popal, he was tortured and murdered after being captured in Iran.

Another four interpreters are feared to have suffered the same fate while using people smugglers to flee the Taliban. 

Their families believe the missing men may have been killed by the Iranian authorities or by militias.

Another Afghan considering paying traffickers is ex-UK military and Foreign Office interpreter Niz, whose family has been attacked three times by gunmen hunting him. In March, the Taliban launched an ambush near his home in Kunar province, attacking a vehicle identical to his and killing two innocent men and injuring a third.

‘This is only because of my work for the British and I have asked them for help, for asylum, but regretfully I am stuck here,’ said the law student. ‘The attitude of the British drives people to take desperate measures to ensure their safety. It is disgusting and we feel abandoned. What price, what risk do we put on our lives?’

The tradition, which commemorates the death of the Prophet Mohammad's grandson, is seen by some Shi'ite Muslims as away of washing away their sins.

The Day of Ashura is a national holiday in some Muslim countries, with thousands taking part in annual rituals which include people whipping and cutting themselves with chains and knives.
