Texas DA: ‘I’m Pro-Life, But the Law Is the Law’

It didn’t take long after Harris County District Attorney Devon Anderson announced the indictment of anti-Planned Parenthood videomakers David Daleiden and Sandra Merritt for the conspiracy theories to swirl.

It also didn’t take long for Anderson to shut all of them down. In a two-minute video statement posted Wednesday night, Anderson vehemently rebuts the idea that her office was ideologically predisposed to punish the pro-lifers.

“Anyone who pays attention knows that I’m pro-life,” Anderson said. “I believe abortion is wrong. But my personal belief does not relieve me of my obligation to follow the law.”

Even though Anderson’s beliefs don’t align with Planned Parenthood, she told doubters in her Wednesday video statement that the grand jury had to follow the evidence: “The inconvenient truth of a criminal investigation is that it doesn’t always lead where you want to go.”

The Harris County grand jury cleared Planned Parenthood of any wrongdoing. So far, none of the many state-level investigations into the organization sparked by Daleiden’s undercover video campaign have turned up evidence of criminal behavior.

That hasn’t stopped the tinfoil hats from coming out in force to protest this first criminal indictment of the anti-abortion activists.

Oregon Judge Who Refused To Marry Same-Sex Couples Found 'Unfit'

A judicial oversight panel investigating complaints against Marion County, Oregon, Judge Vance Day, has recommended that the State Supreme Court remove Judge Day from the bench. Judge Day came to the panel's attention in May of 2014 when he refused to officiate at the weddings of same-sex couples after Oregon legalized marriage equality. The judge maintains it is against his Christian beliefs to participate in a same-sex couple's wedding.

The Commission on Judicial Fitness and Disability sent its formal recommendation to the Oregon Supreme Court this week, accusing Judge Day of discrimination based on sexual orientation, among other serious charges.

"His misconduct is not isolated. It is frequent and extensive,” the commission found.

The commission charges Judge Day “willfully” violated ten different rules of the Code of Judicial Conduct, including his refusal to officiate at the marriages of same-sex couples. The commission said whenever a same-sex couple asked Judge Day to officiate, he told his staff to lie about his availability and direct them to another judge. Judge Day did not dispute that practice, but argued same-sex couples were not denied their rights because another judge was always found to marry them.

Boko Haram in Nigeria kills at least 86, burns children

A survivor hidden in a tree says he watched Boko Haram fighters firebomb huts and heard the screams of children burning to death, among 86 people officials say died in the latest attack by Nigeria's homegrown armed group.

Scores of charred corpses and bodies with bullet wounds littered the streets from Saturday night's attack on Dalori village and two nearby camps housing 25,000 refugees, according to survivors and soldiers at the scene just 3 miles from Maiduguri, the birthplace of Boko Haram and the biggest city in Nigeria's northeast.

The shooting, burning and explosions from three suicide bombers continued for nearly four hours in the unprotected area, survivor Alamin Bakura said, weeping on a telephone call to The Associated Press. He said several of his family members were killed or wounded.

The violence continued as three female suicide bombers blew up among people who managed to flee to neighboring Gamori village, killing many people, according to a soldier at the scene who insisted on anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to journalists.

13 Killed, 32 Churches, 300 Houses Burnt in Fresh Boko Haram Attacks on Borno Village‎s - Metro Watch

Thirteen persons were killed, 43 churches and 300 houses were burnt on Saturday when Boko Haram insurgents attacked  Mussa community, in Borno State, the chairman of the youth vigilante group in the village, Stephen Apagu said on Sunday.

He said Boko Haram returned to Mussa (A&B), remote villages  in Askira/Uba Local Government, Killings 10 civilians ‎with the militant losing three members to the attack.

He equally revealed that  “all 32 churches in Mussa district and over 300 houses were burnt down.”

Boko Haram carried out a fresh wave of massacres in northeastern Nigeria on Friday, locals said, killing nearly 200 people in 48 hours of violence President Muhammadu Buhari blasted as "inhuman and barbaric". The militants have staged multiple attacks across restive Borno state since Wednesday, gunning down worshippers at evening Ramadan prayers, shooting women in their homes, and dragging men from their beds in the dead of night.

A young female suicide bomber also killed 12 worshippers when she blew herself up in a mosque in Borno. While there was no immediate claim of responsibility, Boko Haram has used both men and young women and girls as human bombs in the past. And as night fell, Nigerian troops battled "hordes of Boko Haram gunmen" who seemed set on attacking the state capital Maiduguri, the birthplace of the extremist Islamist movement.

"President Muhammadu Buhari has condemned the latest wave of killings... describing them as most inhuman and barbaric," the presidency said in a statement. The bloodshed is the worst since Buhari came to power in May, vowing to root out the insurgency that has claimed more than 15,000 lives. Up to 50 armed men on motorbikes stormed the village of Mussa in the latest atrocity on Friday, shooting villagers and burning their homes, survivor Bitrus Dangana said. "They killed six people in the village and they chased the inhabitants into the bush, firing at them... 25 people were killed in the bush," he said. Another survivor, Adamu Bulus, confirmed 31 people had been murdered. It was the fourth time that Boko Haram had attacked the village in the past year, local youth worker Sunday Wabba told AFP, describing how they "killed everyone on sight".

'I Do Not Construe Homosexual Rights As Human Rights' Says GOP Human Rights Subcommittee Head - The New Civil Rights Movement

U.S. Congressman Chris Smith earlier this week announced gay rights are not human rights. "I am a strong believer in traditional marriage and I do not construe homosexual rights as human rights," Smith said. He also suggested that the Obama administration’s "views on LGBT rights affected or hindered our support for Nigeria to defeat Boko Haram."

The conservative Republican from New Jersey is now under attack by LGBT groups in his home state and nationally, by the Human Rights Campaign.

Heightening the impact of his anti-gay statement is that Rep. Smith is the chairman of the Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, Global Human Rights, and International Organizations, and made his comments at a meeting of that subcommittee, which is a part of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

Congressman Smith's remarks were made on Wednesday, perhaps ironically, during a hearing he chaired on Nigeria. That same day, Nigerian law enforcement arrested twelve men accused of holding a same-sex wedding.

Terrorist Leader Admits To Kidnapping Missing Nigerian Schoolgirls | ThinkProgress

The identity of just who kidnapped more than three hundred schoolgirls in Nigeria finally became clear on Monday when a new video emerged of the leader of terrorist group Boko Haram admitting to the abduction. “I abducted your girls,” Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau said in the video, according to news agency AFP. Shekau is said to have continued on to promise of the girls’ fate: “I will sell them in the market, by Allah.” Shekau also said in the video, according to AFP, that the outrage over the kidnapping is “because we are holding people [as] slaves.” AFP did not immediately make the video with Shekau’s comments available online for further analysis. A BBC translation of the video has the terrorist leader saying “the girls should not have been in school in the first place, but rather should get married,” and directly quotes him as saying “God instructed me to sell them, they are his properties and I will carry out his instructions.”

In the weeks since the girls were originally kidnapped from their school in the village of Chibok, in Nigeria’s northeastern Borno state, most observers had concluded that Boko Haram were the likely culprits, but until now the group has remained silent on the girls’ plight. Local reports have indicated that several of the at least 276 still missing girls have been sold to their captors as child brides for the sum of 2,000 Nigerian naira — or $12 USD — a situation that Shekau’s comments appear to verify.

The Nigerian government’s search — or lack thereof — for the kidnapped girls has drawn attention over the last week as the families of the abuctees have launched protests demanding more action. That pressure has caused President Goodluck Jonathan to finally speak out on national television about the crisis. “We promise that wherever these girls are, we’ll surely get them out,” Johnathan said on Sunday night. “One good thing that made me happy and I believe most Nigerians are happy is that there is no story that any of them have been hurt in terms of injury or death.” The president had previously told a May Day rally “we must find our missing girls” and “the perpetrators must be brought to book.”

That same pressure now appears to have caused the detention of one of the leaders of the protest movement. Naomi Mutah Nyadar , one of the leaders of the protests and a representative of Chibok, met with Nigerian first lady Patience Jonathan and was then taken to a police station, activists told the BBC. Saratu Angus Ndirpaya said the detention of herself and Nyadar took place after an all-night meeting with the first lady, during which she says Mrs. Johnathan accused the movement of fabricating the abductions to tarnish her husband’s image. Ayo Adewuyi, a spokesperson for the first lady, however, told AP journalists: “The first lady did not order the arrest of anybody, and I’m sure of that.”

In 2010, long before the mass killing that now engulf Nigeria began, there was a masked man hoisting an AK-47, a stack of religious books and a promise. His named was Abubakar Shekau, the leader of the Islamic group Boko Haram, and in the 25-minute video clip, he promised to annihilate all traces of Western culture and education in AfriAbubakar Shekauca’s most populous nation.

It would start with a prison break. Two months after the video’s release, dozens of armed militants belonging to the group stormed a prison and freed 150 Boko Haram members, and 700 more inmates. Then on Christmas Eve, the group unleashed a flurry of bomb attacks in Nigeria that killed 38 Christians worshiping at church or shopping for gifts. “We will continue with our attacks on disbelievers and their allies and all those who help them,” the group said.

As the months and years passed, the number killed by Boko Haram rose inexorably.

But now, Nigerian authorities contend Boko Haram, which is today recognized as one of the most murderous terrorist groups in the world, has likely conducted one of its most chilling acts of terror yet. On April 16, in the middle of the night in northeast Nigeria, dozens of armed men who answered to the name Boko Haram captured 234 girls sleeping in dormitories at Chibok school and disappeared in the dark. In the two weeks since, despite parents’ searches deep in remote forests, there has been no sign of the girls.

The fact that the girls were in school speaks to the motive. The terror group, which has not claimed responsibility for the abductions, has roots in an anti-education ideology. Its disdain for an education model left behind by Britain is manifested both in the translation of the group’s name — “Western education is sinful” — and its terror attacks.
