UPDATE::  So I guess the grand debate took place.  Sounds more like "my (interpretation of) god is bigger than your (interpretation of) god" but in the end junior Shoebat's vitriol and hatred shined bright for all the world to see.

Yesterday, Theodore and Brown finally faced off in a debate on Brown's "Line of Fire" radio program and Shoebat posted video of his side of the conversation in which he made clear his support for violent vigilantism against gay activists.

When Brown asked him point blank if he thinks it is a good thing when militant Christian activists go out and physically attack activists marching in gay pride parades in other countries and whether he'd like to see the same thing happen here, Shoebat was unequivocal.

"I'll give you a short answer," he said. "To the first question: yes; to the second question: yes, absolutely."

Shoebat said that physically assaulting gay activists was theologically justified and praised the nations where it takes place, saying that "I wish America had this stuff."

It’s rather comical that Matt Barber now denounces Shoebat considering that it was Barber who published multiple columns from Shoebat on his own site, BarbWire. Those columns were quietly deleted only after several posts about them here on JMG.

They are both jackals that need sedation.  The disputes (as JMG also notes above and I have posted about previously) I personally have with both are long and arduous and in some cases transcend the LGBTQI discussion.  So for this post we are going to ignore that for the moment and focus only on what JMG presents.

Today anti-LGBT Christian activist Michael Brown published a column for the viciously anti-LGBT Charisma News in which he denounced fellow anti-LGBT Christian activist Ted Shoebat for his many calls to execute homosexuals. Shoebat responded on Twitter by challenging Brown to a debate on this aspect of Christian Love™ and Brown has accepted. From the opening to Brown’s column,,,

I would pay money to see this as neither Brown nor the Shoebat's are being - shall we say, intellectually honest.  Brown can huff and puff all he wants but his failure to denounce the likes of Romero, Berzins, Anderson and Swanson is telling.  A week after the fact just doesn't cut it.  The fact that he endorses Cruz, he is thereby endorsing Swanson and the father's hateful rhetoric.

On the other hand we have daddy Shoebat defending his son, Theodore, who is advocating violence against homosexuals. In fact, Theodore, wants it to be legal, state-sanctioned violence which is supposed to make his reprehensible position more palatable.

Although I will not go quite as far in my praise for Charisma or BarbWire as the following comment, I believe Gigi is quite accurate in her summation of Shoebat's antics.

His cult of personality in reminiscent of early Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church.  His competition with Anderson and Swanson, as to to whom can be the most vile, is laughable if not for the fact it is dangerous.  Ask Peter LaBarbera and Scott Lively how well that has worked out for them.

So,,, if these two debate, I do hope it will be available online and available to the general public.  While I dislike Michael Brown's stance on homosexuality as I believe he is wrong, I will give him some credit - for now- for taking a public stance against the out-right violence endorsed by the Shoebat's.  My question for you Mr Brown, is when will you do the same concerning Anderson and Swanson, et al?  Or does your dislike only apply to those of the Catholic faith?

[Please note::  If any of my readers are aware of a published article or video in which Mr Brown has chastised the likes of Anderson or Swanson, for their violent, anti-gay rhetoric, I would be much obliged if said article is passed along.  It is very possible that I have missed it; the aforementioned article not withstanding.  After the fact doesn't count in my book.]

As I was putting together the previous post, three items (two articles by Right Wing Watch and one video segment by Rachel Maddow) came to fruition - make that four items now.

As RRW notes in regards to Maddow's very scary video piece, 

But, as Maddow pointed out on Friday night, while the Cruz campaign would not bother to dignify her inquiries with a response, it did quietly distance itself from Swanson and his event in mid-December, telling USA Today that "it was a mistake" for Cruz to have attended the conference:

A tipping point, [Americans United for Separation of Church and State’s Barry] Lynn said, came at last month’s National Religious Liberties Conference in Iowa, where Cruz said, “any president who doesn’t begin every day on his knees isn’t fit to be a commander-in-chief of this country.” Cruz was also introduced onstage by Pastor Kevin Swanson, who, earlier in the conference, quoted a passage of the Bible that he claimed justified the execution of homosexuals.

“This is over-the-top rhetoric, even for a conservative presidential candidate,” Lynn said. “There is a lot of religious fervor going on in [Cruz's] campaign.”

Tyler, the Cruz spokesman, called Swanson’s comments “reprehensible” and said Cruz has spoken out repeatedly against anyone who calls for hatred or violence against homosexuals.

“Senator Cruz is passionate about religious liberties” Tyler said in an email. “Many respected organizations were sponsoring [the conference], but, given these offensive comments, it was a mistake for Senator Cruz to appear at the event.”

In regards to the cat-fight between Brown and the Shoebat's:

The fighting has only escalated in the wake of Shoebat's recent assertion that Jesus would have personally beaten gays to death, which was denounced by LaBarbera, as well as by fellow anti-gay activist Michael Brown.

This did not sit well with Shoebat's father, Walid, a supposed "ex-terrorist" who posted a furious screed on his website attacking LaBarbera, Brown, Matt Barber and anyone else who has dared to criticize his son's extremist views, accusing them of worshiping gay blogger Joe Jervis of Joe.My.God instead of the one true God,,,

And the last item, which is very peculiar, Cruz Spokesman Ousted After Suggesting Rubio Renounced The Bible:

In another strange development in the Republican presidential primary, Ted Cruz’s top campaign spokesman is out of his post after circulating a news article suggesting that Marco Rubio mocked the Bible.

Cruz, whose campaign has been dogged by allegations of perpetrating dirty tricks, said that his spokesman Rick Tyler committed “a grave error of judgment.”

Gary Johnson, 2012 Libertarian presidential candidate, will run in 2016

Gary Johnson, a two-term Republican governor of New Mexico who became the Libertarian Party's 2012 presidential nominee, will officially announce his 2016 campaign on Fox News on Wednesday.

"It was kind of a commitment from the last go-round that I made to a lot of people," said Johnson in an interview with the Washington Post. "The idea was, if I do well enough, I'll run again. I’ll be the first one to say that I don’t think I did very well at all! But everyone else has said otherwise, that it was a very successful, very significant campaign for the party."

In 2012, Johnson won 1,275,923 votes for president, the highest overall vote total in the party's 40-year history. Yet while Johnson had long been a dream candidate for Libertarians, dating back to his early embrace of decriminalized marijuana, he only made the run after a marginalized and disappointing GOP primary campaign. Johnson was kept out of most televised debates, and "liberty movement" voters largely swung behind the campaign of then-Texas Rep. Ron Paul.

David Barton, John Locke’s Two Treatises, and the Real Reason Thomas Nelson Pulled the Jefferson Lies

In a previous post, I asked Locke scholar Greg Forster to evaluate this claim. Forster declared it to be completely false. In fact, Locke did not refer to the Bible 1500 separate times nor did he invoke 1500 Bible verses, as Barton sometimes claims. Apparently, Barton’ staff had to count all 900+ verses from the books of Proverbs to get to 1500. See this prior post for what it appears Barton had to do to get to the 1500 number. Why Bible-Believing Christians May Want to Drop Allstate Right Now

The Allstate promotion does not share the reality that this child will grow up without the nurture that only a mother can provide. Nor does Allstate recognize the emotional trauma and questions this child will endure growing up in a home with two men.

Studies predominantly show that children raised in homosexual environments tend to struggle emotionally more than their peers, are highly more susceptible to drug and alcohol abuse and often suffer severe depression as young adults.

First off dumb-ass it's Vodou, of which there are numerous regional variations each of which has its own distinct pantheon of spirits.  Second point neglected, Vodou is not "satanic" and practitioners do not worship "demons".  The loa are equivalent to the Saints in Catholicism; they intercede with God on behalf of the practitioner.

Zombies?  Seriously, Hollywood is not a proper citation for information. You may wish to consult on the difference between a Houngan (or Mambo) as compared to the "folklorish" bokor or sorcerer. Zombie creation is not a part of Vodou, with a bokor considered more of an outcast generally not accepted by the Houngan or Mambo.

The only redeeming aspect of the attached piece is that the author, Jessilyn Justice, at least didn't cite the ole bloviating windbag, Pat Robertson:

Why did Charisma News run this story?

My initial reaction was why no media coverage.  Thinking I may have missed something I began a search,,

Why is Charisma News lying by implication?  You see this "event" occurred in 2013!

Like Michael C, I came across this article,

I searched "Seattle pride assault" and ended up reading a story about two gay men (Steven Briggs and Patrick Dettling) who traveled to the Seattle Pride event this past weekend and ended up hospitalized by a group of men and women who beat them while using homophobic slurs.

I'm not interested in the minutiae of the 2013 incident, as it is beyond the scope of what I want to present.  It did happen; as with the Father Morris spitting incident, I do not condone violence of any kind.  What I am interested in: 

Obviously this is horrible and a terrible crime to humanity....My question is why has charisma NEVER had an article or even mentioned the hundreds of thousands of beatings to LGBT?....Not to mention the 16 deaths of transgender this year alone?.....I obviously abhor violence on anyone regardless if they are for or against LGBT rights but lets not pretend you care about tolerance when you NEVER speak up to defend the LGBT from brutal violent attacks and even death.

A related point is that Charisma has many articles describing the imprisonment of Pastor Saeed Abedini, who truly should not be imprisoned. He should be released, as should everyone in any country who is imprisoned for blasphemy or related "crimes". However, have you ever read about atheists who are imprisoned in Islamic countries, or have you seen Charisma advocate for their release? I haven't. The case of Raif Badawi in Saudi Arabia is just as despicable as that of Pastor Abedini, but is never mentioned. Badawi was convicted of setting up an Internet forum that "violates Islamic values and propagates liberal thought." He was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment, 1000 lashes (to be meted out 50 strokes at a time), and fined 1,000,000 riyal. The first 50 strokes have been delivered, and for a while his case was being re-examined to see if he could be convicted of apostacy - which carries the death penalty. All for simply advocating freedom of speech and freedom of thought.

And, why?  What is the point?  Is it because you are trying to use this event as a way to debase gays and lesbians even further?  That to me is the very definition of bigotry.

Americans United enjoyed a dubious distinction late in February: Within the space of a week, the organization was singled out for attack by two Religious Right groups.

First out of the gate was the Liberty Institute, a Religious Right legal group based in Texas. The Institute published an article titled “5 Dangerous Enemies Against Your Christian Faith” on the website Charisma News. Americans United was among the five.

In a brief synopsis, Liberty Institute noted that Americans United was founded in 1947. Just about everything else it reported after that was a lie, a half-truth or an inflammatory distortion.

According to the Liberty Institute, AU has “worked to ban ‘God’ from graduation speeches, shut down the activity of prison ministries, outlaw school vouchers allowing parents to send children to religious schools, and tear down veterans memorials.”

Added the Liberty Institute, “They also constantly lobby Con­gress and threaten religious activity in local communities.”

The charges were a distortion of AU’s work that failed to tell the whole story,,,

Four days after that list was issued, another Religious Right group lashed out at Americans United. The American Family Association, a stridently fundamentalist outfit based in Tupelo, Miss., released a “Bigotry Map” listing “anti-Christian” groups in America.

The map, obviously based on the Southern Poverty Law Center’s map of American hate groups, broke down the groups into four categories: “Homosexual Agenda,” “Anti-Christian,” “Atheist” and “Humanist.”

Americans United was listed under the “Anti-Christian” category. These organizations, they AFA asserted, actively engage “in the complete eradication of the Christian faith from society, government and private com­merce. These groups file lawsuits and use intimidation to silence any reference to Christianity from the public square.”

Why do they lie?

This is just one of those things that is super fascinating about the Christian right, which is that they have this deep-to-the-core disrespect for the truth that manifests in telling really obvious fairy tales and fantasies. The pleasure derived from demonizing abortion providers or Planned Parenthood [you can also insert atheist, humanist, or any individual/group not agreed with] outstrips any concerns about the immorality of lying about people, but it also outstrips any concerns about people realizing you’re a sleazy, no-good liar. Robertston and Calhoun [and Starnes] don’t worry about being caught in flagrant lies, because their own people will never hold them accountable for it,,,

I think the problem is that because they’ve convinced themselves they’re the only moral people left in the country, they, perversely, feel entitled to do any immoral thing they want without consequence. “Morality” is a tribal identity issue, in other words, and not a result of your actual behavior. They’re convinced they’re good and pro-choicers [insert group individual of choice] are bad, and so that means that everything they do is good and everything we do is bad, even if they’re lying and we’re telling the truth. Oh, how true this observation/opinion is.  I have lost count of the numerous faux outrages, based on lies, I have posted about.  Yet it still continues as the following (headlines) will demonstrate,,,

First reported by Charisma News with the headline Atheists Work to Block Charity From Feeding Starving Kids:

Students at the School of Engineering and Arts recently visited Calvary Lutheran Church to participate in a volunteer program sponsored by Feed My Starving Children, a nonprofit organization run by Christians that seeks to eliminate world hunger for children. As part of the program, students prepared prepacked meals that would be sent to malnourished children across the globe and did not engage in any religious activities.

“It’s shameful for groups like the American Humanist Association to attack charity groups that provide impoverished children with help they wouldn’t otherwise receive,” says senior legal counsel Jeremy Tedesco. “We hope that our letter will help Robbinsdale Area Schools understand that they can continue to allow students to participate with Feed My Starving Children and other worthy humanitarian service programs for the benefit of the needy.”

The next day, the master of hyperbole, Todd Starnes states once again claims of anti-Christian persecution, American Humanist Association demands students stop feeding starving kids:

The humanists got their britches in a bunch after the family of a student at the School of Engineering and Arts objected to the project being held at Calvary Lutheran Church.

The humanists took special offense to biblical terminology used to describe the mission to feed starving children.

How the atheists must have trembled at the sight of the cross as they tried to avert their eyes lest they soil themselves and spontaneously combust.

What I find so telling and why the highlighted statement above is spot on, Starnes continues:

I called Latisha Gray, the spokesperson for the school district – a very nice lady who seemed rather perplexed by the controversy and said they don’t believe they violated the U.S. Constitution.

“We believe that this activity was a service learning activity,” she told me. “There was absolutely no evangelizing or religious activity in the event.”

In other words, she is a nice Christian lady, who has no personal understanding of the First Amendment and what legal ramifications it entails.  Her misguided thinking concerning this issue,

the project was held during school hours as part of a community service project.  [AND] It’s the second year the school has partnered with “Feed My Starving Children.”

is fed by the "we believe" faction that holds to "their interpretation of the law is the only correct interpretation," and the atheists are bad, therefore wrong.

What is so infuriating is the blatant mis-characterization of what is at issue.  Spinning a possible SOCAS violation as, atheists trying to block the charity itself is dishonest and unnecessary.

The first point that Starnes et al choose to ignore in this case, "Christian" exceptionalism.

"Gray said the school is aware that a parent had complained about the event,,,The AHA said the parent also complained about the event last year."  So the school, knowing there was a previous issue with this project, chose to ignore it, "it is even more egregious that, after the parental complaint was made last year, you did nothing to remedy the problem, but instead suggested that the parent was misguided for complaining."  What Starnes leaves off, "We therefore seek immediate assurance that activities such as those complained of herein will cease immediately and not be continued in the future."  So the nice Christian lady, Latisha Gray who "seemed rather perplexed by the controversy" is full of shit.  She knows exactly what the problem is and so does Starnes.

A second point, trivializing the obvious

Further down in his diatribe, Starnes gives us this statement, "AHA said they don’t have a problem feeding hungry children. They just have a problem doing it inside a “theologically-charged environment.”  And concludes with, "This is a new low even for humanists. It takes a special kind of godless thuggery to take food out of the mouths of starving children."

Dude, I should say dudes as Jeremy Tedesco (ADF) alludes to this as well, I think you missed the point.  The AHA is NOT trying to stop the charity from feeding children, they are trying to prevent religious indoctrination of young impressionable children

1]  As we all know, charities such as Feed My Children (why is it MY Children?) depend on volunteers.  These kids were NOT volunteers, this was part of a school requirement for community service.  Hence why it was deemed a field trip and performed during school hours.

2]  Just the fact that this field trip occurred at a church implicitly supports a connection between church and state.  Church implies religion, specifically, Christianity.  I know of no 6,7 or 8 year old that would be able to separate the connection. 

3]  The goal of Christianity, proselytization (the Great Commission).  "The website of the church in question (the Calvary Lutheran Church) describes its mission as “to lead people into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ."

4]  The mission of the charity in question, "We believe God answers the prayers of His people and ask you to join us in praying.”

So yes Mr. Starnes it was a "theologically-charged environment" to insinuate otherwise is disingenuous.  For me to think that proselytizing to a "captive" audience was not the main focus of such organizations, I would have to ignore this and this:

Brannon, 25, said they decided to hand out care packages to the homeless after being told they could not volunteer at the Spartanburg Soup Kitchen.

"I told them we wouldn't wear our T-shirts. We wouldn't tell anyone who we are with. We just want to help out," Brannon said. "And they told us that we were not allowed."

According to the Soup Kitchen's website, the organization is dependent upon volunteers, having more than 600 community volunteers with a mission to serve the hungry in Spartanburg.

Lou Landrum, executive director of the Soup Kitchen, told the Herald-Journal she would resign from her job before she let atheists volunteer and be a "disservice to this community."

"This is a ministry to serve God" she said. "We stand on the principles of God. Do they (atheists) think that our guests are so ignorant that they don't know what an atheist is? Why are they targeting us? They don't give any money. I wouldn't want their money."

And,

The bad news is that we aren’t likely to have a volunteer event. The reason is unfortunate: Kansas City Rescue Mission has decided to use the meals they deliver as a chance to proselytize to its recipients by inserting religious literature into the meals. They informed us that we “would not be a good fit” (emphasis theirs) for volunteering with them, and declined to respond to any further inquiries. We can only speculate at their motivation behind this,,,

So why do they lie?  I have no clue.  The author of the original article couldn't answer it succinctly either:  "With the religious right, however, the tendency to put fantasy in front of fact is the dominant cultural imperative. Conspiracy theories about Planned Parenthood are the norm. Entire laws are being passed based on the lie that legal abortion is dangerous.
