A 54-year-old Buddhist monk from Segamat, Johor, was arrested earlier today, 16 January, after two of his students lodged police reports against him for sexual assault

Sin Chew Daily reported that two teenagers, aged 15 and 16, lodged police reports against him on 14 January.

They were students of the man at a Buddhist school located in Segamat. 

The monk reportedly asked the teenagers to stay back after classes at the Buddhist school, and performed oral sex on them.

A politician was jailed 16 months after changing his plea and admitting to sedition for insulting Islam and the Prophet Muhammad in a Facebook posting.

Kota Kinabalu Hight Court Deputy Registrar Zairi Zainal Abidin, who sat as Sessions Court Judge, ordered the jail term against 50-year-old David Orok to run from Tuesday after dismissing his application for a stay of execution on the sentence.

David was charged under Section 4(1)(c) of the Sedition Act for insulting Islam and the Prophet Muhammad in a Facebook posting while at his house in Tuaran near here on July 4.

He had initially pleaded not guilty to the charge and his trial was supposed to begin on Tuesday.

The Court was told that a police report had been lodged by a woman after she received a WhatsApp message containing a screenshot of Orok's Facebook posting.

It was one the 46 police reports lodged against Orok, a State Reform Party member, after his Facebook posting went viral.

Terengganu’s former chief Shariah judge today panned a so-called “Islamic” medical expert’s claim that paranormal beings was a possible cause for Malaysia’s humiliating 10-0 loss to UAE in the World Cup qualifier.

Datuk Ismail Yahya said the penchant for these Malaysians to fall back on such claims could be because they were infected with a “spiritual virus” inside them that made them resort to practices that were not consistent with the teachings of Islam.

“My view about the supernatural which Malaysians always make a connection [with], between a disaster or loss means spiritual virus (sic),” Ismail told Malay Mail Online by email when contacted.

“Spiritual virus can come through magic, the environment such as their homes, the attitude of someone obsessed with things or the practice of the teaching of ‘unreligious’ mysticism,” he added.

Ismail had been asked to comment on a report earlier today by Malay tabloid Kosmo, which cited a purported “Islamic” medical expert Datuk Shamsuri Shafie as claiming that “makhluk halus” or paranormal beings may be to blame for Malaysia’s loss in the qualifying match on Wednesday.

The Prime Minister of Malaysia has cited Islam in saying that the human rights of LGBT people will not necessarily be protected.

Najib Razak spoke at an international Islamic moderation seminar in Bangi Selangor, to say that his administration will adopt some human rights protections but not those which conflict with Islam.

Noting LGBT rights, he said that some of the “more extreme aspects of human rights”, would not be defended by Malaysia.

He said this was in line with the Islamic teaching of balance and moderation.

“Although universal human rights have been defined, we still define human rights in the country in the context of Islam and the Shariah,” he said, reports the Malay Mail.

“Even though it is difficult to defend internationally, we must defend our definition of human rights.”
“And even if we cannot defend human rights at an international level, we must defend it in the Islamic context,” he said.

A supernatural approach involving djinns and black magic has no place in the modern healthcare system, local doctors have said ahead of a regional forum that aims to reconcile paranormal beliefs with medicine this month.

The doctors explained that modern healthcare bases itself on evidence-based medicine, and there must be a way to measure whether the supernatural approach actually works before it can even be considered.

“I understand and appreciate the efforts to introduce the concept of djinn, which is part of religious belief. However, I do not think that it is possible to have an evidence-based approach to djinn and black magic,” Dr Helmy Haja Mydin, an associate professor with University of Malaya Medical Centre, told Malay Mail Online.

“By definition, these are things that cannot be seen and cannot be measured. Without measurements, you cannot have data. How to measure belief?” he asked.

As with Dr Helmy’s views, Dr Krishna Kumar, the president of the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA), said evidence-based medicine required demonstrable causality in order to be effective.

“There must be something to show what causes the diseases or something that can cure it. Based on that, we treat them,” Dr Krishna said.

Dr Kok Sen Wai, a psychiatric medical officer based in Sarawak, said he has witnessed various illnesses — from seizures to schizophrenia — being treated as “djinn possession” or black magic by faith healers of different denominations, from Muslim imams, Taoist priests to Christian pastors.

“There are no codified and consistent signs and symptoms for possession or curses. The diagnosis seems to be made if the cleric ‘feels’ it is supernatural. Can you imagine if medicine is practised in the same way?” asked Dr Kok.

“Can an oncologist drop chemotherapy on you just because he has a ‘gut feeling’ it’s leukaemia? Or can a surgeon lop off half of your colon and have you defecate out of a colostomy bag for the rest of your life just because he ‘really, really thinks’ that you have colorectal carcinoma?”

Dr Kok insisted that should the rigorous standards that apply to conventional medicine be applied to the supernatural, the faith healings need to have documented, testable, and reproducible evidence that they do work.

MALAYSIA - The RM55,000 (S$21,000) fine imposed on a family, who caused the death of a toddler in an exorcism ritual that went wrong almost a year ago, has been described as a slap on the wrist that does not commensurate with the gravity of the offence.

Penang Bar Committee criminal law chairman Ranjit Singh Dhillon yesterday said the Butterworth Sessions Court's decision on Friday to fine the family was inadequate compared with the offence and that the prosecution should file an appeal against the sentence.

He said the family members charged with causing death by a negligent act not amounting to culpable homicide should have been sentenced to a jail term as well.

He said toddler Chua Wan Xuen's parents, who face a second charge of exposing their child in a manner likely to cause physical hurt, should face time behind bars.

"Public interest demands it. It cannot be just a fine."
