UPDATE::  Bible student turned ‘cold-medicine killer’ pleads guilty in North Carolina court

A high-profile murder case involving a one-time Bible college student and prospective minister who claimed he killed his wife after taking too much cold medicine came to a close Oct. 5 with a guilty plea.

Matthew Phelps, 29, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in the September 2017 death of 29-year-old Lauren Hugelmaier Phelps, his wife of less than a year.

Matthew Phelps, who once studied missions and evangelism at Kentucky Baptist Convention-affiliated Clear Creek Baptist Bible College, was sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole in a plea bargain sparing him from the death penalty.

The case made national headlines when police released a 911 audio recording of Phelps saying he thought he killed his wife but could not remember because he had taken too much cold medicine. Lab results found drugs used in over-the-counter products in his system, but experts said the levels were too low to cause hallucinations or a blackout.

"It was learned that Matthew Phelps was obsessed with the movie 'American Psycho' and this Instagram account shows numerous photographs of scenes from the movie and Phelps dressed as the main character," the detective wrote. "The movie is about a serial killer, and Phelps expressed interest to a friend regarding what it would be like to kill someone."


Police asked permission to search "any video games, movies, pictures or electronic media that might contain evidence of fascination with felonious or homicidal activity," according to documents.

Friends told investigators that the couple "would argue frequently" and had been disagreeing about finances, according to police. Matthew Phelps "was spending more money than the couple made," a detective wrote, and Lauren Phelps "had recently taken drastic steps to limit her husband's spending."

Investigators also learned that Lauren Phelps was "preparing to end the relationship."

Autopsy results show a Raleigh woman who was allegedly killed by her husband - who claimed to be on cold medicine - was stabbed 123 times.

The autopsy report, which was released on Tuesday, shows that 29-year-old Lauren Ashley-Nicole Phelps died from multiple stab wounds to her face, neck, torso, arms, and jugular vein.

Officials said when they found the victim she was in the fetal position on her bedroom floor. She was taken to WakeMed where she later died.

A North Carolina man was told he could face the death penalty on Tuesday for the murder of his wife after he told a 911 dispatcher he may have killed her after drinking too much cold medicine.

“I had a dream and then I turn on the lights and she’s dead on the floor,” suspect Matthew Phelps, 28, said during a nearly seven-minute 911 call early Friday morning.

“I have blood all over me and there's a bloody knife on the bed. And I think I did it,” he said in the call, which was released by the Raleigh Police Department.

But some of the known side effects of Coricidin range from racing heart and drowsiness to a drunken feeling and hallucinations.

And, in a 2012 study, scientists concluded that high doses of a specific ingredient in the medicine have been found to cause mania and hallucinations and that potentially left people “at risk for violent and self-destructive acts.”

UPDATE:: Christian Band Reunites With Lead Singer Who Hired Hitman to Murder His Wife

In 2013, Tim Lambesis, the lead singer of the Christian band As I Lay Dying, hired a hitman to murder his wife.

That hitman turned out to be an undercover cop, and not long after Lambesis handed over $1,000 for expenses and agreed to pay a total of $20,000 for the attack, he was arrested. He later received a sentence of six years in prison. He was released on parole at the end of 2016.

And now, to the shock of many of the band’s fans, Lambesis is back to being their lead singer. They just released a new single, “My Own Grave,” and announced a comeback show beginning on Saturday in San Diego.

The lead singer for a heavy metal Christian rock band was sentenced on Friday to six years in prison for pleading guilty to trying to hire a hit man to kill his wife, prosecutors in California said.

Tim Lambesis, 33, lead singer for the band As I Lay Dying, had been in a custody dispute with his wife, Meggan, over their three children in May 2013 when he asked a personal trainer at his gym if he knew anyone who could kill his wife, according to charging documents in the criminal case.

The trainer contacted the San Diego Sheriff’s Department, which sent an undercover detective to meet with Lambesis.

As part of a plea agreement with prosecutors, Lambesis admitted that he had paid the undercover detective $1,000 in cash for the murder, with an additional $19,000 to be paid when his wife of eight years was dead.

The jury found him guilty of first-degree murder and also guilty in the special circumstance allegation of murder involving the infliction of torture.

Jurors then had a choice between recommending life in prison or the death penalty.

A Palmdale man was convicted of first-degree murder Wednesday for the torture-killing of his girlfriend’s 8-year-old son, whose agony-filled life shocked the community and led to criminal charges against social workers accused of ignoring his plight.

Isauro Aguirre, 37, faces a possible death sentence for the killing of Gabriel Fernandez, who was routinely beaten, shot with a BB gun, fed cat feces and forced to sleep while gagged and bound inside a small cabinet. In addition to convicting Aguirre of murder, the seven-woman, five-man jury also found true a special circumstance allegation of murder involving the infliction of torture.

The jury deliberated for about 5 1/2 hours over two days before reaching its verdict late Wednesday morning.

The jail sentence of Rabbi Barry Freundel, a once-prominent Modern Orthodox rabbi in Washington, D.C. who secretly filmed women in his synagogue’s mikvah, has been shortened by over a year due to good behavior, his lawyer said.

Freundel’s 6 1/2-year sentence also was reduced because he participated as an instructor in a program to educate other inmates, the attorney, Jeffrey Harris, told JTA on Thursday.

A day earlier, the D.C. Department of Corrections had sent an email to Freundel’s victims saying the rabbi would be released on Aug. 21. On Thursday, however, the department sent another email saying that Freundel will be released on Aug. 21, 2020. Director Quincy Booth told JTA in a statement that the original email was sent in error.

UPDATE::  Karey not guilty verdict raises concerns in the community

The not guilty verdict for Woodrow Karey has come as a shock to many in the community, who wonder how someone can walk into a church, shoot someone in front of some 50 witnesses and be acquitted.

The killing at Tabernacle of Praise Church on Sept. 27, 2013, could have been different. Ronald Harris's daughter, Talisha Jacko, took a gun out immediately after the first shot.

"I did, I had a weapon on me at the time and I did try to fire it," she said. "However, it did jam up on me because I hadn't shot it in a while. But it did jam up on me. I was very devastated because, at one point, I did go through like, I could have saved his life and I failed him."

So, it could have been a much different outcome. Even if Pastor Harris did bad things to Woodrow Karey and his wife, it's hard for some to see how a jury finds him not guilty, when he admits walking in and killing the preacher in front of so many.

"He walked into a church that was having a revival and killed this man," said Cynthia Killingsworth, First Assistant D.A. for Calcasieu Parish. "We have lots and lots of witnesses that saw this."

She is concerned it sends the wrong message to the community.

UPDATE::  Shooter takes the stand

A man on trial for manslaughter took the stand Tuesday in state district court and told a jury about shooting a pastor nearly five years ago during a church service, saying the pastor raped his wife and was “treacherous.”

Woodrow Karey Jr., 58, told jurors he walked into Tabernacle of Praise Worship Center during a revival service on Sept. 27, 2013, and shot Ronald J. Harris, 51, twice with a shotgun. 

The prosecution has said Harris was having an affair with Karey’s wife; the defense has said Karey’s wife was raped by Harris for years.

Lousiana sheriffs revealed Monday that the pastor shot dead while singing to a service was accused of rape by his confessed shooter's wife.

Just two days before Pastor Ronald J. Harris Sr., 53, was killed while singing to a revival crowd of more than 65, former deacon Woodrow Karey's wife filed sexual assault charges against the pastor.

Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Tony Mancuso said the charges were still being investigated Friday when the 'Karey walked into the Tabernacle of Praise Worship Center, and shot Harris at close range' before turning himself in minutes later.

Mancuso says the woman and preacher had exchanged text messages, and it's not yet clear whether a sexual assault took place.

Harris was preaching at about 8:20 pm on Friday when he was shot twice by the former deacon and fell to the floor.

Harris was pronounced dead at the scene.

UPDATE::  Ex-youth minister admits killing 3, including wife, stepdaughter 

In a hearing to determine if there was probable cause that Gattis killed his wife, Jeanett L. Gattis, 58, and his stepdaughter, Candice L. Kunze, 30, defense attorney John Rockecharlie told the court, “My client admits he was the shooter.”

But Rockecharlie said Gattis advised that “he did it because they were ganging up on him.”

Gattis, 58, a former youth ministry director for Grace Lutheran Church in Chester, is also charged with killing Kunze’s boyfriend, 36-year-old Andrew Buthorn of Olympia, Wash., who had celebrated Thanksgiving with the family.

Because two of the victims were family members, those cases were heard Tuesday in domestic relations court. The case involving Buthorn is scheduled to be heard Wednesday in Chesterfield General District Court.

At the end of Tuesday’s proceeding, Judge J. David Rigler found there was probable cause that Gattis fatally shot his wife and stepdaughter and certified two counts each of first-degree murder and felony use of a firearm to a Chesterfield Circuit Court grand jury. The panel will consider indictments against Gattis on May 21.

Police have arrested a youth pastor for allegedly murdering his family at a home in Chester on Thanksgiving night.

Officers discovered two women and a man shot to death at a home on Dogwood Ridge Court in the Ashley Forrest subdivision around 11:30 p.m.

Officials said the women’s bodies were found inside the home and that the man’s body was found in the front yard.

The victims were identified as 58-year-old Jeanett L. Gattis, 30-year-old Candice L. Kunze and 36-year-old Andrew E. Buthorn.

A jury on Friday sentenced an ex-priest — who once headed the Servants of the Paraclete retreat house in Jemez Springs — to life in prison for murdering a 25-year-old Texas schoolteacher and beauty queen.

Prosecutors asked for 57 years, reflecting how long John Bernard Feit, 85, has walked free since he killed the young woman who went to him for confession at a Texas church in 1960.

The Edinburg, Texas jury found him guilty Thursday in the killing of schoolteacher Irene Garza in McAllen, Texas.

An 84-year-old former Catholic priest goes on trial this week for the slaying of a South Texas teacher and ex-beauty queen 57 years ago.

Jury selection is set to begin Monday in Hidalgo County in the case of John Feit, who's accused of the April 1960 beating and suffocation of 25-year-old Irene Garza. She was found dead in a canal five days after going to a McAllen church for confession.

The Monitor of McAllen reports Feit, who was 27 at the time, worked as a visiting priest in the Rio Grande Valley during the early 1960s.

A Lincoln man remained in jail Monday after police say he shot his neighbor twice following an argument over the Bible Friday night.

Jimmy Livingston, 60, shot 30-year-old Andrew Pickering in the shoulder and hip in the incident at an apartment building at 741 Sumner Street, according to an affidavit for Livingston's arrest.

Just before 7:22 p.m., Livingston pulled out his silver and black handgun and threatened Pickering with it, and then Pickering returned to his apartment, police said.

The State versus Robert Walker trial scheduled to have begun Monday, Oct. 23, 2017 has been continued to a future date. In a memo to Judge Marvin Pope on Wednesday, Assistant District Attorney (ADA) Garland F. Byers, Jr. filed an email  on Wednesday stating that “by Order of this Court without objection by the State due to new discovery which has just been generated in regards to this case and which defense counsel will need in order to adequately prepare for trial,” confirming the continuance.

The district attorney’s office at the same time notified the Buncombe County Clerk of Superior Court that the case would not be called on Monday. Presiding Judge Marvin Pope had ordered a change of venue for the Matthew Fenner cases after a mistrial was declared in the Brooke Covington case and the extensive publicity concerning the Word of Faith Fellowship members’ cases.

The WoFF has recently gained national and international publicity regarding its worship practice of blasting, alleged non-payment of Brazilian workers, broken families, arranged marriages, and possible misconduct of some of the attorneys within the church as reported by the Associated Press.

UPDATE::  Juror's documents lead to mistrial in gay beating trial

A judge held a juror in contempt and declared a mistrial Tuesday in the case of a North Carolina church minister charged in the beating of a congregant who says he was attacked to expel his "homosexual demons." 

Superior Court Judge Gary Gavenus immediately sentenced the juror, Perry Shade Jr., to 30 days in jail and a $500 fine. Gavenus said Shade brought in three documents Tuesday and handed them out to his fellow jurors. One of the documents was North Carolina case law.

Gavenus said he wasn't sure when a new trial would be scheduled for Brooke Covington, 58, a longtime minister at Word of Faith Fellowship in Spindale, North Carolina. Covington faced up to two years in prison if convicted on charges of kidnapping and assaulting former member Matthew Fenner in January 2013.

"This juror has impaired the integrity and fairness of the trial ... therefore I am removing this juror and declaring a mistrial," Gavenus said.

The audience gasped. Fenner dropped his head.

A North Carolina man thought he was "going to die" when members of his evangelical church beat and choked him for two hours to expel his "homosexual demons," he testified Thursday.

Matthew Fenner was the first person to take the stand in the assault and kidnapping trial of Brooke Covington, a 58-year-old minister at Word of Faith Fellowship in Spindale, North Carolina.

Fenner, 23, said Covington was the leader in a 2013 beating involving numerous congregants. He said Covington pointed out his sexual orientation, saying, "God said there is something wrong in your life."

Covington faces up to two years in prison if convicted. She is the first of five church members to face trial in the case. Each defendant will be tried separately.

A Queens rabbi who admitted to stealing $5 million from special needs students has been sentenced to up to three years in prison.

Rabbi Samuel Hiller — the former head of one of the city’s largest providers of resources for pre-schoolers with disabilities — will also have to cough up $1 million in restitution and forfeit over $1 million in seized assets as part of a plea deal. The former assistant director of Island Child Development Center also agreed to shell out $3 million more at a later date.

Hiller, 59, copped to charges of first-degree grand larceny in April as part of a plea deal, which he admitted to siphoning city and state funds destined for three to five-year-olds with special needs.

The 42-count indictment of grand larceny charges the four men with stealing $12.4 million in city and state education funds between 2005 and 2012, a theft allegedly picked up on by state auditors.

As 1010 WINS’ Juliet Papa reported, state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli’s audit found all kinds of improprieties.

“They basically overcharged and falsified records, and then took the money and spent it on other purposes that were personally enriching to these individuals,” DiNapoli said.

It’s charged that Rabbi Hiller diverted $8 million to religious camps and Orthodox schools, including the private girls’ academy where he worked as principal.

It’s further charged that the rabbi diverted $30,000 of the money to have plumbing work done on his home.

Bail for the four men ranged from $200,000 to $500,000. Three posted bond immediately, Slattery reported.

UPDATE:: Oregon Court of Appeals upholds pastor's child sex abuse conviction

The Oregon Court of Appeals has upheld the conviction of a pastor sentenced to prison for sexually abusing a girl who grew up in his Happy Valley church.

The court affirmed the conviction of Mike Sperou without opinion on Wednesday, records show. A Multnomah County jury convicted Sperou in 2015 on three counts of first-degree sexual penetration of a person under the age of 12, and he was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

He's being held in the Oregon State Penitentiary in Salem, and records list his earliest release date as December 27, 2032.

An Oregon pastor was charged 18 years after several women accused him of sexually abusing them as minors.

Michael Sperou, 64, faces three felonies for unlawful sexual penetration of people under 12, according to KOIN. Seven women have lived in frustration since their complaints about the Happy Valley pastor in the 1990s went unanswered.

Now, prosecutors are taking a second look at those complaints. Sperou, who was arrested last June, is accused of sexually abusing women -- who ranged in age from 11 to 16 at the time -- in the Southeast Bible Church community, which is now known as the North Clackamas Bible Community, the Oregonian reports.

Jury selection began in his case this week. Prosecutors found that the statute of limitations had expired on most of the women's cases, but Sperou was charged based on new allegations by 28-year-old Shannon Clark. The victim said she withheld information from investigators in 1997 because she thought the community was on Sperou's side.

Dutcher testified at the beginning of the fourth week of trial for Koerber, who’s facing 18 charges that allege he took in about $100 million in investments and returned nearly half that back as interest payments in an alleged Ponzi scheme.

An indictment alleges that Koerber told investors their money would go to purchase single-family homes but that he also spent money for restaurants, personal expenses like luxury autos and the Dutcher movie.

Tanishia Fielder is in jail, charged with stabbing her baby boy in the face in her apartment.

Detectives said under questioning, Fielder admitted to the crime.

She said she used a kitchen knife, and police later recovered a knife under a trash bin behind the apartment building.

Two former leaders of a prestigious, Brooklyn-based chain of Yeshivas are facing up to 20 years prison for claiming they were serving kids federally subsidized suppers five nights a week — and instead pocketing the $3 million in subsidies, the feds said Thursday.

Elozer Porges and Joel Lowy, formerly executive director and assistant director of Central United Talmudic Academy, pleaded not guilty to conspiracy and fraud at their arraignment in Brooklyn federal court.

The yeshiva bigwigs had submitted phony documents claiming that between 2014 and 2016, low-income and at-risk children stayed late and ate supper every weeknight at three of their schools — at 762 Wythe Ave., 25 Franklin St. and 84-88 Sandford St. — the charges allege.

But while many of the schools’ kids ate federally subsidized breakfasts, lunches and snacks, they wouldn’t stay for supper, the feds said.

School is dismissed by 4:45 p.m. and no supper is served, bus drivers at the Wythe Avenue school told The Post Thursday.

A former pastor of First Christian Church in Princeton has been arrested on embezzlement charges.

Christopher L. Stansell, 48, was arrested July 27 for embezzling more than $10,000 in church funds, Sgt. M.S. Haynes, with the West Virginia State Police Princeton detachment, said.

Haynes said the incidents occurred over period of a year and a half while Stansell was employed as pastor of the church.

A former Catholic priest in Maryland is facing 18 months home confinement after pleading guilty in a scheme to steal church funds.

71-year-old Rev. John Mattingly of Charlotte Hall was sentenced Monday to three years supervised release, including the home confinement period. He also was ordered to pay $400,000 restitution, which was paid prior to the sentencing hearing.

Cameron Banks (a.k.a. Reggie Staggers) of Georgetown has been charged in a seven-count federal indictment with health care fraud and an alleged scheme to submit fraudulent loan applications for dental services, according to a news release from United States Attorney Beth Drake.

Banks was also arrested in May for intentionally burning down the Abundant Faith Lighthouse of Jesus Christ on 4th Avenue in Conway and was charged in March on multiple tax charges.

The maximum penalty he could receive for each of the health care fraud counts is 20 years imprisonment and a fine of $250,000, the release said.

Pastor's wife charged with stealing $1.4M from Kentucky clinic

 

A pastor's wife has been accused of stealing money from a medical clinic in Kentucky.

Susan Combs Pratt was indicted by a grand jury last week after officials from Mercy Clinic of Jackson said she stole $1.4 million from the practice.

Pratt is charged with theft by failure to make required disposition of property charge. Commonwealth District Attorney Darrell Herald says the charge is predicated on her coming into possession of money and not disposing of it as she should have.

Police say Geronimo violently pushed a table into her and hit her over the head with wine decanters before pouring water into her mouth to "cast the devil out."
