Iowa’s GOP Senate candidates vow to block judges who won’t follow ‘biblical law’

Like many others, I am wondering, what part of no religious test don't these idiots understand?

Four Republican candidates for the U.S. Senate fell over themselves to show deference to religious right voters in a forum sponsored Friday by The Family Leader.

Right Wing Watch reported three of the candidates vowed they would block federal judge nominees who did not adhere to “natural law,” which the candidates described as handed down by God.

Radio host and retired Air Force colonel Sam Clovis (pictured above) said he would use natural law as a “litmus test” for judges, while Sarah Palin-backed state Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Red Oak) said judges and senators should understand U.S. laws “come from God” and make their decisions “within that criteria.”

But Matt Whitaker, a former federal prosecutor, declared his opponents had not gone “far enough” and said he would demand federal judicial nominees be “people of faith” who “have a biblical view of justice.”

“As long as they have that worldview, then they’ll be a good judge,” Whitaker said. “If they have a secular worldview, where this is all we have here on earth, then I’m going to be very concerned about how they judge.”

Bob Vander Plaats, head of the conservative Family Leader group, opened the forum by declaring that God had three institutions – “the church, the family, and government.”

He warned that legal abortion and marriage equality would remove God’s blessing from the U.S.

“As we have a culture that runs further and further from God’s principles, His precepts, from God’s heart, it’s only natural consequences that we’re going to suffer,” Vander Plaats said. “You cannot run away from the heart of God and expect God to bless the country.”

It can be hard to stand out in crowded primaries. But two Republican Senate candidates have determined that repealing a century-old Constitutional amendment is a good way to get noticed.

Radio host Sam Clovis in Iowa and former Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel are both proposing a repeal of the 16th Amendment—the one that has given the government the authority to levy income tax since 1913.

"I think the 16th Amendment ought to be repealed," Clovis said in a Des Moines debate last week. "If we repeal the 16th Amendment we get rid of the IRS."

Speaking at a Republican women's meeting earlier this month, Handel said the move would make the tax system fairer and save Americans money.

Nixing the Internal Revenue Service is potentially an issue with legs for a GOP base that's still fuming over the agency's targeting of conservative groups last year. Retiring Sen. Saxby Chambliss of Georgia, whose seat Handel is vying for, sponsored the Senate's Fair Tax Act of 2013. In November, Republican Rep. Jim Bridenstine of Oklahoma filed a bill to repeal the 16th Amendment, scrapping the federal tax code and abolishing the IRS.

For those that have said to me, "no one wants to repeal minimum wage" how much more proof do you need? Keep voting for the Reich and we will be down to pre-1950 wages and pre-1930 working conditions.

I can guarantee this will be in the Reich's platform for 2014 and 2016!!

At a Meet & Greet in Bettendorf, Iowa, Republican Senate candidate Sam Clovis said that he doesn’t think the government should set a minimum wage except in the few areas where employers have monopolistic control.

After an audience member said in reference to the minimum wage, “The U.S. government has got no right to dictate to any business owner what they pay their employees,” Clovis responded, “Exactly.”

He went on to explain, “I don’t think the U.S. government should talk about minimum wage. Because every time you raise the minimum wage, you increase unemployment.” He said he does support a starting wage for those who work in an area where employers “could collude and offer lower wages,” but “not in cities, not where you have competition for workers.” He also called the minimum wage “a form of taxation.”

Meanwhile, he claimed that just 1.2 percent of the workforce works for minimum wage and that the majority are “men 16 to 25 who live at home.” He also claimed, “Not a single worker I know of in the city of Sioux City that works for minimum wage. Not a single one.”
