Come next week, a few of Congress’ most notorious Tea Partyers will no longer be in office. Rep. Paul Broun, a Georgia Republican who once declared evolution and the Big Bang Theory “lies straight from the pit of hell,” lost a U.S. Senate primary this year and won’t be returning to the House. Neither will Michele Bachmann, who needs no introduction.

But the departure of such inflammatory conservatives hardly means that the 114th Congress will be a more sober one. Indeed, the crop of Republicans taking power next month is even further to the right than the current House GOP conference. The newly Republican Senate, too, will feature more than its fair share of ultraconservative hard-liners. Today, Salon looks at five of the most extreme Republicans taking power in Washington this month.

Mark Walker

The retirement of North Carolina GOP congressman Howard Coble paved the way for the election of Baptist pastor Mark Walker, whose statements on race and immigration range from condescending and cringe-worthy to downright frightening.

Walker once wrote on Facebook that he “had the privilege of spending an hour with an African-American male who grew up in the inner city,” but he lamented that “most of these Americans have no concept of the pride and joy when we, as parents, invest in our children.”

On border security, Walker said at a debate that “we got to go laser or blitz somebody with a couple of fighter jets for a little while to make our point.” When the moderator asked whether he worried that this could lead to a war with Mexico, Walker replied, ”Well, we did it before. If we need to do it again, I don’t have a qualm about it.”

Cory Gardner

As he geared up to challenge Democratic Sen. Mark Udall of Colorado, Rep. Cory Gardner confronted a major problem: on issues like immigration, the 2013 government shutdown, and reproductive rights, he’d taken ultraconservative positions unlikely to play well in a statewide election. So Gardner did what any cynical politician would do; he moderated his rhetoric, pretended he was open to compromise on issues like immigration, and even recanted his support for a state-level personhood amendment. (However, Gardner did continue to support a federal personhood bill, which he disingenuously asserted was nothing more than a statement that he “supports life.”)

It turns out that by branding themselves as members of a party that has returned to its mainstream, center-right roots after successfully stamping out a Tea Party rebellion, even “establishment” Republican candidates are able to hold all sorts of extreme views without any consequences.

Maybe we shouldn’t be surprised that a party that regularly endorses candidates who deny climate science and denounce evolution has moved the political center so far to the right that even candidates with radical views can still be treated as moderates. These days, Republicans win kudos simply for stating that they don’t want to ban birth control or destroy the economy by refusing to raise the debt ceiling.

Iowa’s Joni Ernst: Obamacare is bad because people should rely on churches for help

And in a perfect world, the Salvation Army would not be able to discriminate against one in need who happens to be a lesbian.  Or a church could not demand/require attendance at services in order to get help from a community supported (via voluntary wage deductions) charity,,,

In audio obtained by Iowa Public Radio, Senate hopeful Joni Ernst told a group of reporters that the reason Republicans oppose Obamacare is because the job of caring for the poor is simply not the purview of government. The poor, she said, should rely on churches and charitable organizations for help.

“We’re looking at Obamacare right now,” Ernst said. “Once we start with those benefits in January, how are we going to get people off of those? It’s exponentially harder to remove people once they’ve already been on those programs.”

“We have lost a reliance on not only our own families, but so much of what our churches and private organizations used to do,” she went on. “They used to have wonderful food pantries. They used to provide clothing for those that really needed it, but we have gotten away from that. Now we’re at a point where the government will just give away anything. We have to stop that.”

And since the homosexual militants have long made known their aims to challenge the Christian churches especially, it is no surprise to see the Christian faith coming under increasing attack. Indeed, all this is not unexpected. Any recent coercive movement seeking dominance has always had to target the churches.

In the past century, for example, whenever totalitarian regimes took power, the normal practice was to shut down churches, to destroy churches, or at least closely monitor and control the churches. Even sermons were monitored, with only state approved ones allowed to be delivered.

Pro-Life Tea Party Christian Todd Kincannon: Execute All Ebola Patients (Screenshots)

Todd Kincannon, former director of the South Carolina GOP and staunch pro-lifer (when it’s convenient, given that he supports abortion when it and time travel could eliminate someone he hates) has a solution to that whole Ebola…thing.

In a series of tweets, Kincannon explained that his solution to the problem presented by the virus can easily be solved with a little cold-blooded murder and a whole lot of napalm!

Eugene Delgaudio Warns Gay Men Will Soon Be 'Skipping Down To Adoption Centers To Pick Out A Little Boy For Themselves'

Eugene Delgaudio, a Loudoun County, Virginia Republican supervisor who heads the group Public Advocate of the United States is warning his supporters that gay people are preparing to “terrorize daycare centers, hospitals, churches and private schools” by teaching schoolchildren “perverted sex acts” and getting married, at which point “[y]ou’ll see men hand-in-hand skipping down to adoption centers to ‘pick out’ a little boy for themselves.”

In a fundraising email yesterday with the subject line, “They say you support homosexual ‘marriage,’” Delgaudio told supporters that he is the only one who can reverse the “Homosexual Agenda” in Congress.

LaBarbera: America Must Embrace 'Christian Oriented Law That Does Not Try To Grant Civil Rights Status To A Sin'

Peter LaBarbera appeared on the "Point of View" radio program yesterday where he proclaimed that America must embrace "Christian oriented law" so that groups like his Americans For Truth About Homosexuality, the Family Research Council, and the America Family Association will no longer be smeared as "hate groups" because of their anti-gay activism.

Saying that gay activists no longer believe in tolerance, LaBarbera declared that such activists are intent on destroying anyone who will not embrace the "fiction" that gay relationships are acceptable by attacking them as haters.

Peroutka: Nondiscrimination Laws Plot To Replace God With Government 'Idolatry'

Peroutka — who is also a GOP candidate for a county office in Maryland — agreed, saying “If you believe that you are God, as government has proved over and over again that it believes it is…you don’t want there to be another God, you don’t want anybody to have an allegiance to the one true and living God, the God of the Bible whose son is Jesus Christ, because if that exists it is the enemy of your own idolatry.”

Tea partiers seriously believe in secret UN plan to turn us all into hipsters

Fears of a one-world government are helping to drive grassroots objections to zoning and development plans in communities across the U.S.

Developers and industrialists have long objected to zoning regulations that inhibit their plans or raise costs, but talk radio hosts such as Glenn Beck and Alex Jones have stoked fears that the United Nations would impose European-style socialism through local zoning boards.

They’re worried high-density residential developments, bicycle lanes, and other “smart” growth plans are evidence of Agenda 21 – a voluntary action plan adopted in 1992 by delegates at the U.N. Conference on Environment Development to promote sustainable development.

An article on Jones’ Infowars website says simply, “Agenda 21 = Death,” and Beck has published a fictionalized account of a dystopian future under the imposition of the U.N. guidelines.

Joni Ernst is the lovely and super charming state senator from Iowa who would like to be the real senator from Iowa. Likes include castrating pigs and warning about the Eeeevil Agenda 21 plot to seize your farms and make you live in, ugh, “Urban Centers.” As if those were not reason enough to let her join the world’s most exclusive club of decision makers, she will also arrest the entire federal government for you, America.

In response to an Iowa State Legislative Candidates survey in 2012, Porcine Ball Slicer Ernst answered this definitely not crazytown question in the affirmative (for you dumb-as-dirt Ernst fans out there, that means she said “yes”):

Unemployment truthers see new conspiracy

Two years ago this week, the nation’s unemployment dipped below 8% for the first time since the start of the Great Recession. Almost immediately, Republicans were outraged – the good news couldn’t be real, they said, but rather must be the result of an elaborate conspiracy.

Friday we learned that the nation’s jobless rate has dipped even lower, dropping below 6% for the first time in over six years. Rush Limbaugh told his audience that the 2012 data was “entirely made up” and “artificially manufactured,” and the 2014 data is worse.

“[T]his today is just as illegitimate. This 5.9% number is even more illegitimate than the 7.9% number. There’s no way that this country has an economy producing jobs with an unemployment rate of 5.9%. It just isn’t happening…. [I]t isn’t real.”

Rick Wiles: Obama 'Maliciously Infecting US Soldiers With Ebola'

Rick Wiles warned last week that a decision to send U.S. service members on a relief mission in West Africa to help contain the Ebola outbreak is more proof that President Obama’s “job is to destroy the United States of America, and he’s doing it quite well.”

The “Trunews” host said on Friday that President Obama is either out of his mind or is “maliciously infecting U.S. soldiers with Ebola so that it spreads through the American Armed Forces and they bring it back to the United States like World War I vets brought the Spanish flu back to America.”

“I’m shocked that American military commanders are letting this guy get away with it,” he added. “Are they stupid and incompetent or are they deliberately letting Ebola spread? The jury’s still out on this one. Either they are brain-dead stupid or they want Ebola to spread.

In Utah, the Same-Sex-Union Battle Shifts to Acceptance

Just hours after a curt order from the United States Supreme Court on Monday opened the door to same-sex marriages in 11 states, State Representative Kraig Powell, a Republican opponent of same-sex marriage, opened a bill file in the Utah legislature to revise marriage statutes. He suggested rewriting the law to refer to same-sex marriages as "pairages" -- an idea that one openly gay Utah lawmaker, State Senator Jim Dabakis, dismissed as so discriminatory that it represented "apartheid marriage."

But Mr. Powell said the legislature might need to change its laws to reflect what he called the innate differences between a straight couple who are both the biological parents of a child and a same-sex couples who are not. And he said that even the heading that groups the state marriage laws -- "Husband and Wife" -- would now need rethinking.

"It's going to start from the very title page," Mr. Powell said. "If anyone thinks that's just a technical process, changing wording here and there, they're mistaken." He added: "The differences between a same-sex relationship and an opposite-sex relationship are large enough that maybe we ought to recognize the difference between them."

Right-wing commentator Morgan Brittany, who has been busy promoting her new book “What Women Really Want” on conservative networks like Fox News and The Blaze, took to WorldNetDaily today to recount a recent dinner party conversation about whether people can trust the Obama administration to handle the spread of Ebola.

Brittany, in WND’s trademark just asking the question style of journalism, wondered if the government is “orchestrating” the Ebola outbreak to murder people and put them in FEMA coffins while imposing martial law.

“Questions were then brought up about the stockpiling of ammunition and weapons by Homeland Security over the past couple of years and the $1 billion worth of disposable FEMA coffins supposedly stored in Georgia. Why was there preparation being made for FEMA camps to house people in isolation?” she writes. “My fear is that this has all been orchestrated from the very beginning. Who knows? Maybe the current administration needs this to happen so martial law can be declared, guns can be seized and the populace can be controlled. Once that happens … game over.”

Iowa’s GOP Senate candidates vow to block judges who won’t follow ‘biblical law’

Like many others, I am wondering, what part of no religious test don't these idiots understand?

Four Republican candidates for the U.S. Senate fell over themselves to show deference to religious right voters in a forum sponsored Friday by The Family Leader.

Right Wing Watch reported three of the candidates vowed they would block federal judge nominees who did not adhere to “natural law,” which the candidates described as handed down by God.

Radio host and retired Air Force colonel Sam Clovis (pictured above) said he would use natural law as a “litmus test” for judges, while Sarah Palin-backed state Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Red Oak) said judges and senators should understand U.S. laws “come from God” and make their decisions “within that criteria.”

But Matt Whitaker, a former federal prosecutor, declared his opponents had not gone “far enough” and said he would demand federal judicial nominees be “people of faith” who “have a biblical view of justice.”

“As long as they have that worldview, then they’ll be a good judge,” Whitaker said. “If they have a secular worldview, where this is all we have here on earth, then I’m going to be very concerned about how they judge.”

Bob Vander Plaats, head of the conservative Family Leader group, opened the forum by declaring that God had three institutions – “the church, the family, and government.”

He warned that legal abortion and marriage equality would remove God’s blessing from the U.S.

“As we have a culture that runs further and further from God’s principles, His precepts, from God’s heart, it’s only natural consequences that we’re going to suffer,” Vander Plaats said. “You cannot run away from the heart of God and expect God to bless the country.”
