UPDATE::Whatcott, LaBarbera found not guilty | Video

Anti-gay activists Bill Whatcott and Peter LaBarbera were found not guilty of mischief in Regina Provincial Court on Monday.

Whatcott uttered "thank the Lord" after Judge Marylynne Beaton delivered her verdict.

"I'm very happy with the judge's decision ... and of course I believe she's correct," Whatcott told reporters.

LaBarbera, who lives in Illinois and heads Americans for Truth About Homosexuality, was not present, but "I'm sure he'll be relieved," said Whatcott.

LaBarbera and Whatcott were charged with mischief on April 14, after distributing flyers and displaying placards with pro-life and anti-gay messages at the University of Regina campus. They were asked to leave, refused and were arrested.

At the time, U of R provost Thomas Chase called the materials "graphic" and "disturbing."

But "the validity of (their) beliefs are not in issue," Beaton wrote in her decision.

"I find that the purpose of (their) attending the University of Regina was to communicate information and their actions were passive and non-aggressive," Beaton wrote. "The university's response was disproportionate to the peaceful distribution of flyers."

Whatcott said he is working on bringing Scott Lively to Canada. The California-based head of Abiding Truth Ministries is accused of crimes against humanity for his involvement in creating anti-gay legislation in Uganda.

"He obviously has a point of view that Canadians can benefit from," said Whatcott.

Peter LaBarbera, president of the group Americans For Truth About Homosexuality and thought to be one of the most extreme homophobic Christian activists in the United States, and a local man were on trial for mischief in a Regina court this week.

LaBarbera and a local Saskatchewan man, Bill Whatcott, were displaying placards with anti-gay and pro-life messages and tried to set up an information desk on the grounds of the University of Regina after they were told by the university not to.

The pair were arrested after they refused to leave and had to be led out of the university in handcuffs by the police.

The Regina Provincial Court on Thursday heard they were asked to leave the campus because their activities violated the university's policy on maintaining a respectful work environment, CBC/Radio-Canada reported.

Outside the courthouse, LaBarbara and his supporters also protested with signs before proceedings began.

LaBarbera tweeted on Friday, 'Canada is on its way to becoming a Politically Correct Police State--esp. on homosexuality but also guns etc.'

as it seems he can dish it out - he and his group, Americans for Truth About Homosexuality supports a student walkout during the national Day of Silence - but can't take it.

Then on Wednesday the 9th, LaBarbera was the "victim" of a protest:

When Sinclair Community College students and instructors heard that exceedingly anti-LGBT voice Peter LaBarbera was coming to speak on their Dayton, Ohio, campus, a great many of them came up with a novel form of protest. They showed up, apparently to give LaBarbera some sense of satisfaction, and then they just got up and walked out.

To make matters even better, LaBarbera was denied entry into Canada the following day for being such a dick:

The group Intolerance Free Weyburn raised objections with the Canadian government over LaBarbera’s scheduled appearance at a Saskatchewan Pro-Life Association convention April 11 and 12. IFW’s Chris Brookes told the Canadian Broadcasting Company that LaBarbera has never tried to hide the anti-LGBT animus in his message.
