Bryan Fischer: 'Homosexuals Were At The Core Of Forming The Nazi Party' | Right Wing Watch

As I have stated before, Fischer's pathetically false statement may come from Scott Lively's book the Pink Swastika: Homosexuality in the Nazi Party, (1995) it is his favorite canard and he uses it very well.
Lively's ideas have proven too radical for the mainstream family values movement, but they've gotten some traction on the far right. Bryan Fischer, director of issues analysis for the influential American Family Association, regularly parrots his arguments linking gays to Nazis. ("Homosexuality gave us Adolph Hitler," he opined in a 2010 post on the organization's website, "and homosexuals in the military gave us the Brown Shirts, the Nazi war machine and six million dead Jews.")
Regardless of its origination, it nice to see Fischer owning up to his ignorance of world history.  While he recognizes the import of Night of the Long Knives (or Röhm Putsch) he totally misses the point - again!!
Fischer declared that nobody else within the conservative movement has been willing to admit this historical fact because they saw what happened to him when first did so several years back.

"I said that back in 2009, got absolutely hammered, got absolutely blistered," Fischer said, "and I think what happened is people like Jonah Goldberg saw what happened to somebody who was willing to step out and tell the truth about the origins of the Nazi party, that it was rooted in the homosexual movement, homosexual community; it was formed in a gay bar in Munich, most of the officers of the SA, the Stormtroopers, were homosexuals, you had no chance of advancing in the Stormtroopers unless you were a practicing homosexual."
It was a purge of those who threatened Hitler's power. Homosexuals like Ernst Rohm were tolerated as long as they were useful, then eradicated like everyone else wearing a pink triangle.
No Bryan, it had nothing to do with homosexuality.  Ernst Röhm was a founding member of the party who happened to be a homosexual. Hitler arrested him in 1934 and he was shot in a jail cell days later. There is much more to the story but the Nazi's arrested and killed gay people during their time in power. Ya know the whole pink triangle thing,,,WTF!!

If the LGBTQI community had half the influence and power the Reich gives us, we would rule the world.

No, the Nazis did not use fluoride against the Jews,,,It's one big ole circle jerk

We have seen the memes and numerous Goodwin comments before.  It goes something similar to this:

And normally I would let this statement pass yet again (the most infamous may be credited to Jessie Ventura,"Fluoride in the water, that was originally done by the Nazis!" citing Alex Jones' Prison Planet as source) but for some odd reason, I can't this time.  So, let's get the facts correct, shall we.

Please note I am only dealing with the Nazi myth and nothing else.  The "other issues" such as opposition to fluoridation because it is seen as an infringement of personal liberty, or the government is in cahoots with "big whatever"[1] are not my interest at the moment.  That is not to say that some of these alleged issues (and there are more than just those 2 mentioned, ie. topical vs systemic uses, cost-benefit and informed consent being the three most noted in discussions) are not important, just beyond what I want to delve into.  The enemy they most feared by the "anti's" that embrace the Nazis narrative is not fluoride but the government and the scientific establishment.

Yes, the Nazis killed millions. Yes, the Nazis were inhumane.  But, did that include adding fluoride to concentration camp water supplies?  Let's go back to the initial claim - the Nazis did it therefore evil - where did it come from?

Explanation #1 of where did it come from
One of the most oft used claims of the anti-fluoridation crowd surrounds Charles E Perkins; chemist and researcher, who wrote a 44-page tome The Truth about Water Fluoridation (1952, 2nd edition). The narrative put forth by the "antis" goes something like this:
Perkins, related how immediately after the Second World War he was one the Americans put into the well-known I.G. Farben Company in Germany. There he discovered that I.G. Farben had developed plans during the war to fluoridate the occupied countries, because it had been found that fluoridation caused slight damage to a specific part of the brain. This damage had a very particular effect. It made it more difficult for the person affected to defend his freedom. He became more docile towards authority.  It’s also claimed that Perkins was in contact with the German chemists of I.G. Farben who admitted to the “Nazi plot to use fluoride in drinking water”.
[FYI:  there are slight variations of this narrative, some reference the concentration camps where others state the use of fluoride was for POWs.]

The documented truth
While it is true that Perkins thought fluoridation of drinking water was a communist plot, he never mentions "the evil Nazis" in his book.  Neither does he provide any documentation to show the use of fluoridation by the Russians. Perkins simply states,
Mass medication, involving the fluoridation of public water supply systems, has long been known as an important technique of the Communist philosophy of mass control. The scheme of water fluoridation was taken to England by the English-born Russian Communist Kreminoff in 1935. Laski, believed to be the head of the English radical socialists at that time, mentioned it in an article he wrote for HARPER'S MAGAZINE in that year.
Shortly thereafter the English socialists, who had many sympathetic supporters and followers in high places in this country, introduced the fluoridation movement in the United States. In the early 1940's the U. S. Public Health Service, and affiliated agencies, took over the movement and have enthusiastically sponsored it ever since.
Of course, not all of those who are in favor of water fluoridation are Communists, or even Communist sympathizers. Far from it. Although the movement is an integral part of the Communist philosophy of mass control and was originated and is being guided in this country by persons who are alleged to believe in the Communist philosophy, many of the advocates of artificial water fluoridation are well-meaning, public spirited persons of fine repute who believe they are doing a noble work by helping to give children better teeth. [See the section labeled "Water fluoridation is a technique of Communist Philosophy" under part 2; and yes, I have read the entire book.]
Adding further fuel to fire, is a letter allegedly penned by Perkins in 1954 addressed to the Lee Foundation for Nutritional Research.  In the letter, Perkins was asked to better explain his Russian fluoridation comments in his book, and the resulting letter brought to life the alleged “Nazi” connection. He is alleged to have said that German chemists “worked out a very ingenious and far-reaching plan of mass-control,,,through mass medication of drinking water supplies,,,In this scheme of mass-control, sodium fluoride occupied a prominent place.”

Besides the fact that Perkins again has no documentation for the Nazi allegation, there is no source for this letter.  One possible explanation or source (which is speculation) as to origination of said letter and the "Water fluoridation as a commie plot", the John Birch Society.  As PunditFact notes, "the 'dark age' claims of which were being debunked in public at least as early as 1962.

That brings us to Joseph Borkin’s book Crimes and Punishment of I.G. Farben. A frequently cited work as support for the Perkins claim.  As far as I can tell, Perkins has no connections what-so-ever to I.G. Farben.  Other than the above narrative which runs in a hellacious circle jerk, starting with Perkins and ending with Perkins.  Except there is no substantiated evidence that Perkins said what he allegedly said.

Explanation #2 of where did it come from goes something like this. [2]

Image

In other words, some anti-fluoridationists, spouting this specific non-sense, are attributing said "quote" to Joseph Borkin's 1978 book The Crimes and Punishment Of I.G. Farben.

The truth
Yes, I.G. Farben has a very checkered history, in regards to Nazis atrocities and the company's role in such. But, nowhere are the words "fluoridation" and "fluoride" found in Borkin's work; carbon monoxide and Zyklon B are mentioned.  [And again, yes I have read the entire book.]
In August 1941, using 500 Russian prisoners of war as an experimental group, Hoess introduced into the airtight chambers of Birkenau a new asphyxiating agent, Zyklon B.

Actually, Zyklon B, whose generic name is prussic acid, was new only in its application to human beings; its traditional, commercial use was as an insecticide. The result was a revelation of efficiency.
[FYI:: IG Farben did not invent Zyklon B.  That honor belongs to Nobel Prize-winning Jewish German chemist Fritz Haber's research group at the Institute for Physical Chemistry and Elektrochemistry in the 1920s.]

Making matters more convoluted in regard to Borkin, Perkins and I.G. Farben, the only reference to I.G. Farben and fluorine that I could find is this. [Citation provided by author:  Karr, Errol H.: "Elemental Fluorine. IG Farbenindustrie Leverkusen", Technical Industrial Intelligence Agency, June 15, 1946, Fiat Final Report No. 838, Declassified]
During World War II fluorine was used for very special purposes: the Fiat Final Report No. 838 on "Elemental Fluorine" states that since 1940 Germany´s IG Farbenindustrie operated several fluorine electrolysis cells. One of them was built at Gottow during the war for a secret project of the Oberkommando des Heeres (German Army High Command). It "represented the largest production of elemental fluorine in Germany. The fluorine was reported to have been produced solely for the manufacture of a new incendiary agent, chlorine tri-fluoride". An important finding in the research at Leverkusen "was the explosive property possessed by liquefied or compressed fluorine which had not been properly purified. In their initial work on storing elemental fluorine under high pressures a few explosions of the steel cylinders occurred. The explosive property of the fluorine was attributed to traces of such impurities as O3, F2O2, OF2 and ClOF, which were present in amounts too small to be determined." [See subsection labeled "Military uses of elemental fluorine"]
So according to Meiers, I.G. Farben did tinker with fluorine, but it appears it was related to weaponry; possibly atomic.  Try as I may, I could not find any further "legitimate", non circle-jerk information concerning I.G Farben and fluorine.

Explanation #3 or how did Charles E Perkins and I.G. Farben become connected?

As with any fantasy of great length there are different variations of the narrative.  For the most part the discourse includes Ian E. Stephens, Fluoridation: Mind Control of the Masses, with contributions by Harley Rivers Dickinson and Major George Racey Jordan. Just as part one of our narrative was a circle-jerk, so to is this second part. and it begins with Stephens - Stephens cites Dickinson and Dr Hans Mollenburg, both cite variations of the Perkins narrative above.  It is a good example of how Perkins’ unsupported claims get uncritically parroted.

So we pick up the narrative after Perkin's alleged post-war dealings with I.G. Farben.  According to Stephens,
Already an anti-fluoridationst, he urged those who would follow him not to let the anti-fluoride cause fail.   Thirty odd years later (1987), the "cause" was picked up again by Harley Rivers Dickinson, an Australian Liberal MP,  who raised the issue of fluoridation and its sinister implications in an "Address in Reply to the Governor's speech in Parliament." which is recorded in the official Hansard report on August 12th, 1987.  The 'Address' forms part of a document compiled by Ian E Stephens and is entitled the 'Dickinson Statement'.
The relevant Hansard abstract is reproduced herewith. It is emphasized that the writer imputes Mr Dickinson with no other responsibility for the contents of this thesis than being the parliamentary 'trigger' which motivated it and the researched data which it contains.
"While there he was told by the German chemists of a scheme which had been worked out by them during the war and adopted by the German General Staff.
"This was to control the population in any given area through mass medication of drinking water. In this scheme, sodium fluoride occupied a prominent place.
"Repeated doses of infinitesimal amounts of fluoride will in time reduce an individual's power to resist domination by slowly poisoning and narcotizing a certain area of the brain and will thus make him submissive to the will of those who wish to govern him.
"Both the Germans and the Russians added sodium fluoride to the drinking water of prisoners of war to make them stupid and docile."
"At the end of the Second World War, the United States Government sent Charles Eliot Perkins, a research worker in chemistry, biochemistry, physiology and pathology, to take charge of the vast Farben chemical plants in Germany.
The truth, or what I could actually find
Stephens' entire narrative of the -Nazi connection to fluoride- rest completely on the previously mentioned 'Perkins' narrative'.  Keep in mind, the 'Perkins' narrative' is the sole authority of the Nazis use of fluoridation.  As I mentioned previously, Perkins makes no mention of Nazi Germany or I.G. Farben in his book. It is only in the '1954 letter' around which the Nazi-fluoride conspiracy theory revolves. In addition to a lack of evidence for the claims made in his book and letter, it is also hard to even verify the claim that Perkins was put in charge of I.G. Farben as the legal documents for the Farben war crimes trial make no mention of him or of fluoridation. Also remember, Borkin makes no mention of Perkins or fluoridation.

Yes, there was an individual by the name of Harley Rivers Dickinson.  Yes, Dickinson was an Australian Liberal MP.  BUT that is all there is to find.  The PDF of Parliamentary Debates (Hansard) SPRING SESSION 1987 has no mention of Dickinson or his alleged statement.

One would think that if some dude was granted an audience in front of a governing body and made a statement  concerning Nazis, fluoride, and fluoridation, that it would be easy to find.  As one Australia friend notes, "It would have made the news."

[If anyone can find and provide proper documentation - other than the regurgitated nonsense that circles back to Stephens - that this incident concerning Dickinson actually occurred, I will gladly make note of it.  Regardless of whether it is true, matters not, Dickinson also relies on Perkins which I have already shown to be complete garbage.]

The fantasy does continue, but I shall not; at least not in this posting. The truth is simple. The more complex a "story" becomes the bigger the fallacies.  Hence why I state the enemy most feared by the "anti's" that embrace the Nazis narrative is not fluoride but the government and the scientific establishment.

We have done our level best to discourage opponents of fluoridation from using this emotive argument. The historical evidence for this assertion is extremely weak. It is sad that the U.S. media has done such a bad job of educating the public on this issue that it is so easy for crazy ideas to fill the vacuum.

Pastor Responds to Maher over Christian Persecution: Nazis Didn’t Burn the Jews Right Away | Mediaite

Last week Bill Maher went off on conservative cries of Christian persecution, demanding to know exactly where the persecution is coming from. Sean Hannity responded tonight by insisting that, yes, “Christians are often attacked” for their beliefs.

Pastor Robert Jeffress agreed and said, “It doesn’t rise to the level of having their head chopped off by ISIS in the Middle East, but it’s all the same attitude that allows for those attacks.”

And then Jeffress said this:
“I want to remind people that, you know, the Nazis weren’t able to take the Jews to the crematoriums immediately. The German people wouldn’t have allowed for it. Instead, the Nazis had to change public opinion. They marginalized the Jewish people, disparaged them, and make them objects of contempt.”

Jim Bakker Tells Mike Huckabee That Christians In America Are Like Jews Under Nazi Dictatorship | Right Wing Watch

Huckabee pointed to Phil Robertson’s temporary suspension from “Duck Dynasty” following his notorious comments about homosexuality and Jim Crow as proof that Christians are now victims of intolerance. Bakker is so worried about anti-Christian animus that he even tied the plight of Christians in America to Nazi Germany’s anti-Jewish persecution: “If we all took a stand just like the Robertson family did, they can’t put us all in jail at the same time, unless they did something like they did to the Jews.”

The year in homophobia: Ten of the worst anti-LGBT stories of 2014 – LGBTQ Nation

This article sums up pretty much the past year of blogging and more of what is to come.
Supporters of marriage equality made tremendous progress this year in striking down discriminatory bans on same-sex marriages while, on the local level, more municipalities have enacted legal protections on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. The Radical Right, however, sees these changes as a reason to find new strategies to fight what it believes is a tyrannical government bent on persecuting conservatives and inviting divine punishment. Facing losses in court and at the ballot box, many conservatives hope that their brand of anti-gay politics may find more success overseas.

Just in case you thought that the debate over gay rights was “over,” we decided to look back on some of the anti-gay Right’s worst moments of 2014.

9. Civil Disobedience To Stop Gay Rights
8. Breakaway Anti-Gay Nation
7. Dave Agema’s ‘Common Sense’

1. Cheering On Uganda And Russia
This year, Uganda’s president signed into law a new version of the country’s “Anti-Homosexuality Act” which imposed extreme penalties for the crime of being gay (though dropping its provision making homosexuality a death penalty offense in certain cases). American anti-gay activists mostly offered praise to the East African nation. At least one group thought that Uganda should have kept its death penalty plank.

While the country’s top court ultimately struck down the law on technical grounds, organizations such as Concerned Women for America, Liberty Counsel and the American Family Association defended Uganda, with the latter condemning criticisms of the law as Satanic. Pastor Scott Lively, who helped craft the original anti-gay bill, spoke out in favor of the new law.

Glenn Grothman, a Wisconsin lawmaker who last month won his race for an open seat in the U.S. House, also attacked opponents of Uganda’s anti-gay law, warning that people like Sec. John Kerry will bring about God’s judgment on America for his criticisms of Uganda.

The Uganda news came at a time when many U.S.-based activists were already pleased with new laws in Russia criminalizing speech in favor of gay rights and enthralled with Vladimir Putin, demanding that America enact similar laws.

Creationists say theoretical physicist Lawrence Krauss is like Hitler: ‘Very, very terrifying’

I find it quite interesting when religionists attempt to cite history, as they usually get it wrong. Very wrong: “Hitler said some similar things,” Comfort interjected. “Hitler’s Youth.”

First off, it was Lenin who said, "Give me just one generation of youth, and I'll transform the whole world." In reference to Emeal Zwayne's statement, "But the way he said that, ‘In a generation — that’s what we should do, plant those seeds of doubt, it’s our responsibility.’”

Second, the sole purpose of the Hitlerjugend (male youth aged 14 to 18), the Deutsches Jungvolk (German Youth for younger boys), and the Bund Deutscher Mädel ( League of German Girls) was indoctrination, to fight faithfully for the Third Reich. To not question authority and accept instruction like good little soldiers (of God).

Science is not indoctrination; it is a methodology

Science is not a religion; it is knowledge, organized systematically.

Science has no god nor prophets; just many very smart people.

Whether I agree with Krauss's statement or whether his statememnt is a correct observation is moot for the moment. What I find ironic with both Comfort's and Zwayne's implied trope, they need to re-examine their own statements, dogma and doctrines. They are so concerned by the ability of science to de-legitimitize their ideology, they fail to see the harm and fear they themselves cause.
"When one provokes in a child a fear of the dark, one awakens in him a feeling of atavistic dread. Thus this child will be ruled all his life by this dread, whereas another child, who has been intelligently brought up, will be free of it." (Adolf Hitler, "Table Talk" discussions on the night of July 11-12, 1941, p. 12)
When one is injected with the god virus at an age before the ability to think critically for one's self you will remain that way for life unless you are exposed and taught to question dogmatic authority.  Religion has no rightful place, it preaches intolerance against anything deemed as sinful in the minds of those most afflicted with this virus.  Playing Godwin’s Law, as Comfort and Zwayne did, is a sign of a flawed argument. When you are backed against a wall and see no logical way out, playing the Hitler card is an attempt to demonize your opponent.

"Religion is fundamentally opposed to everything I hold in veneration-courage, clear thinking, honesty, fairness, and above all, love of the truth."
H.L. Mencken"

Catholic Capitulation on Marriage | R. R. Reno | First Things

A demonstration of how entrenched right wing ideology is within the minds of some within the Catholic Church. R.R. Reno compares Pope Francis’ appeal to the church to treat gay people more like actual human beings, to the church’s treaty with Adolf Hitler.
These are unforced capitulations. They don’t involve legal coercion. In Creighton’s case, the action was taken over the objection George Lucas, archbishop of Omaha. Which is why I read them as the beginning of what will be a fairly widespreadcapitulation on gay marriage and homosexuality by leaders of Catholic universities and institutions.

[,,,]
I’m sure Pius XII would have denied that signing a Concordat with Hitler’s Germany meant he approved of Nazism. But it conferred legitimacy and dramatically undercut any basis within the Church for resistance. The same goes for the concordat many Catholic institutions are signing with gay marriage. It confers legitimacy on the sexual revolution and undercuts resistance.

I can understand why Pius XII sought the Concordat with Hitler. He hoped to secure a stable basis for the Church’s ministry in Germany. I can also understand why many Catholics (including, perhaps, Pope Francis) want to make their peace with the sexual revolution, putting “divisive” culture-war issues behind them so that they can go on with the work of the Gospel and so forth. Moreover, Hitler in 1933 didn’t look so bad—and respectable gay couples don’t seem a threat to marriage or anything else.

But Pius misjudged, as the horrors that followed made painfully evident. Our age is different. But I fear that when the full implications of the sexual revolution are manifest—calls for marriage equality will lead directly to calls for reproductive equality and a fundamental redefinition of the family—we’ll rue our concordat.
Totally out of step with reality and at odds with the views of the people sitting in the pews.

Fischer: 'The Gay Gestapo ... Is Basically The Same As Islam' | Right Wing Watch

Bryan Fischer remains furious about the Supreme Court's decision not to hear appeals of lower court rulings striking down gay marriage bans, declaring on his radio program today that gay activism and radical Islam both operate underneath the same "dark, totalitarian" spirit.

"It's convert, submit, or die a political death," Fischer said, linking the push for marriage equality to radical Islam. "Convert, submit, or be banished. I mean that's really what we're dealing with. This is the same kind of totalitarian strain that you see in Islam and this is the gay gestapo pushing this and their message is basically the same as Islam."

State Sen. Perry discusses morals in inaugural speech | Lubbock Online | Lubbock Avalanche-Journal

"Hence today I believe that I am acting in accordance with the will of the Almighty Creator: by defending myself against the Jew, I am fighting for the work of the Lord" *Adolf Hilter: Mein Kampf

After placing his hand on the Bible and taking the oath of office, state Sen. Charles Perry compared what he called the “spiritual battle” brewing across the nation to the Holocaust.

God has a place in the government, Perry explained in his inaugural speech as he vividly recalled a recent trip to a former concentration camp in Berlin.

“There were 10,000 people that were paraded into a medical office under the guise of a physical. As they stood with their back against the wall, they were executed with a bullet through the throat. Before they left, 10,000 people met their fate that way,” Perry said.

“Is it not the same than when our government continues to perpetuate laws that lead citizens away from God? The only difference is that the fraud of the Germans was more immediate and whereas the fraud of today’s government will not be exposed until the final days and will have eternal-lasting effects.”

While serving in the Senate, Perry said, he will address the financial needs of the state by prioritizing state funding and balancing the budget without raising taxes. Though he anticipates political debate in the process, that isn’t what Perry said most concerns him.

His biggest challenge will be the “spiritual battle for the spirit of this nation and the soul of its people,” he said.
When he gets to the capital, abortion and same-sex marriage will be at the forefront of discussion, Perry said.

ADDENDUM::Anti-Gay Activist Peter LaBarbera: I'm Like A Jew In Nazi Germany! | Right Wing Watch

“We have to trust in God to protect us,” LaBarbera said, suggesting that criticism of his anti-gay activism is fanning the flames of violence.

“This demonization is just — it’s what’s been done to minorities to the past and like I said, it’s what the Nazis did to the Jews,” LaBarbera added. “We’re losing our freedoms.”

LaBarbera repeatedly told Mefferd that HRC and others are trying to stop him from appearing in the media, which is actually exactly what LaBarbera did to gay rights advocate Wayne Besen.
"We're losing our freedoms." Hmmm, let me think about that for a few - you mean like this,,,
Fuck you Peter LaBarbera and your sanctimonious bullshit that you're being demonized.  That "we" are fanning the flames of violence.  I don't see your name as a victim in any of the 3700+ reports of hate I have on file.  The only thing you are a victim of is delusional thinking that you justify (wrongly I might add) by using a 2000-year-old book of fairy-tales and myth.

15 Values Voter Summit Speakers Who Think The US Is Becoming Nazi Germany | Right Wing Watch

I know in the past I have commented about what appears to be a "new" GOTP talking point, the Nazification of the US.  In other words everything they don't like is compared to Hitler or the Nazis or called fascist.  But yet despite the dictatorial tyranny of the Obama Regime we have yet to see any gun confiscations, churches are open for business as usual (some better than others), and there are no concentration camps filled with GOTPers; Christmas has not been cancelled and our capitalist economy continues to grow.  But yet this list is of no surprise, just shows I wasn't hallucinating,,,
At the Values Voter Summit, which begins this Friday, Republican politicians and Religious Right leaders will come together to rebuke President Obama, attack the gay community and decry the current state of affairs in the U.S.

Subtlety and nuance aren’t this crowd’s strong suits. In fact, it wasn’t that hard for us to come up with a list of at least 15 scheduled summit speakers and panelists who believe that America has gotten so bad under Obama’s leadership that the country has become just like Nazi Germany.

Texas Values' Jonathan Saenz: Gay Activists Are Trying To "Put People In Jail" | Blog | Media Matters for America

Texas Values president Jonathan Saenz agreed with a right-wing radio host that gay activists are trying to put Christians in concentration camps, asserting that the gay rights movement wants "to put people in jail" if they disagree with marriage equality and "the homosexual lifestyle."

In a June 20 interview with Raging Elephants Radio, Saenz condemned a recent Colorado Civil Rights Commission ruling affirming that a Denver-area baker had violated the state's non-discrimination law by refusing to bake a cake for a same-sex couple. Host Claver Kamau-Imani asked Saenz whether the ruling was tantamount to sending the baker to a "concentration camp." Saenz agreed, asserting that there's "no question" gay rights supporters ultimately aim to imprison opponents of LGBT equality:

[,,,]
This isn't the first time Saenz has resorted to extreme rhetoric to attack LGBT equality. A prominent opponent of local efforts to combat anti-LGBT discrimination in Texas, Saenz has also predicted "polygamy and polyandry" and marriage between step-parents and step-children as a result of marriage equality. A vocal proponent of discredited "ex-gay" therapy programs, his solution to the problem that gay people exist is telling them that "it's never too late" for them to "change."
