You know your favorite late-night sandwich spot, the Yellow Deli? It’s tied to an organization with a deep history of physically abusing children and religious fundamentalism, a nine-month CU Independent investigation has found.

Yellow Deli, the all-day, all-night Boulder cafe frequented by students has been open about its evangelist roots, but behind the cheap sandwiches and free Wi-Fi is a darker history. The CUI investigation is based on interviews with 12 ex-members of Twelve Tribes, a religious organization linked to the restaurant, and reviews of over 400 pages of  Twelve Tribes documents obtained both publicly and through sources.

Six ex-members of Twelve Tribes told the CUI they were witnesses or victims of child abuse in Twelve Tribes locations around the globe. Others described intense control exerted by the group on its members. 

“Childhood was hell,” said Alex, an ex-member who agreed to talk with the CUI without the publication of his last name. At a Twelve Tribes compound in Cambridge, New York, he described being beaten bloody sometimes to the point of collapsing.

The author of the teachings is the Twelve Tribes founder, Gene Spriggs. He founded the group as a small Christian community in Chattanooga, Tennessee, preaching in his home and baptizing people in the lake behind his house. Spriggs started a group in 1972 that would become the Twelve Tribes and opened the first Yellow Deli to support the group soon after. The group is commonly cited as having between 2,000-3,000 members. Since its founding, the tribes have faced accusations of being a cult and spouting fundamentalist ideology.

A jury in southwest Colorado has convicted a mother of two girls who died after they were banished to a car without food or water by members of a doomsday religious group because the girls were thought to have been impure.

Nashika Bramble was found guilty Wednesday of two counts of first-degree murder in the 2017 deaths of 10-year-old Makayla Roberts and 8-year-old Hannah Marshall, KMGH-TV in Denver reported . The sisters' bodies were found in a car parked on a San Miguel County farm near Norwood in September 2017. Authorities said they died of heat, dehydration and starvation.

Ceus has pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of child abuse resulting in death. Another group member, Ashford Archer, was sentenced in June to 24 years in prison after he was convicted of two counts of fatal child abuse and being an accessory to a crime.

Three members of a doomsday cult suspected of involvement with the deaths of two children last year in southwestern Colorado are scheduled to take their cases to trial this summer.

Madani Ceus, 37, Ashford Archer, 51, and Ika Eden, 54, were among five people arrested on a remote farm outside Norwood where authorities discovered the bodies of 10-year-old Makayla Roberts and her sister, 8-year-old Hannah Marshall, last summer.

The bodies of the two girls — whose mother, Nashika Bramble, was a cult member — were found Sept. 8, mummified in the car in which they apparently died of heat, thirst or hunger after being segregated from the group as it awaited the end of the world.

Ceus, who has been cast as the group's ringleader and who claimed to be a deity, is charged with two counts of first-degree murder, and two counts of child abuse resulting in death.

A woman acting as a "spiritual leader" to a small group of people living on a Colorado farm ordered two girls kept in a car without food or water weeks before their bodies were found, according to one member of the group.

Madani Ceus faces murder charges along with Nashika Bramble, the girls' mother, for the death of 10-year-old Makayla Roberts and 8-year-old Hannah Marshall. Three other adults also face charges of fatal child abuse.

Officials investigating the case have been tight-lipped about how the girls died and how they came to the farm. Court records unsealed by a judge at the request of KOTO Community Radio and the Telluride Daily Planet revealed the group members' belief that Ceus was a spiritual leader and allegations that she ordered the girls punished while the group was living on the property outside Norwood, about 30 miles west of the ski resort town of Telluride.

Documents presented last Thursday at a US federal court show that leaders of the fringe Hasidic cult Lev Tahor last year requested asylum from Iran and swore allegiance to its supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

According to the documents, first reported late Saturday by Yeshiva World News, the ultra-Orthodox cult in November 2018 asked Tehran for “asylum, protection and religious freedom of the families of its loyal members in Cheshek Shlomo community.”

Lev Tahor declared “loyalty and submission to the Supreme Leader and the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran” and called for “cooperation and help to counter Zionist dominance in order to peacefully liberate the Holy Land and the Jewish nation.”

UPDATE::  Cult member convicted of beating half brother to death appeals 25-year sentence

The boy's half-sister, Sarah Ferguson, was convicted of second-degree murder for her role in the attack. In New York's appellate court in Rochester on Wednesday, she argued her conviction and 25-year sentence are too harsh. 

"As soon as she saw the blood, she stopped the whipping, so I would argue the whipping was a reckless act (not intentional)," said her attorney, Peter DiGiorgio.

The case exposed the cult-like activities of the church. Ferguson was the only defendant to go to trial. Eight others, including the parents of the boys, pleaded guilty.

UPDATE::  Four defendants in Word of Life case fail to reach plea deal; judge sets one week deadline before new trial date set

The four remaining defendants in the Word of Life Church murder trial will have one more chance to accept a plea deal when they return to court next Friday, according to County Court Judge Michael L. Dwyer.

Otherwise, a new trial date will be set, the judge stated this morning.

Pastor Tiffanie Irwin, Joseph Irwin, Linda Morey and David Morey all made a surprise appearance in court this morning to possibly accept plea offers, but Dwyer said no agreements had been reached.

Dwyer said that all four defendants must accept the offer together or none at all.

He did not disclose the details of the offer.

Dwyer told them that if they did not reach a deal by next Friday then he would set a new trial date for all four of them.

Two other defendants, Traci Irwin and David Irwin, each accepted a plea deal of one year in county jail last Friday for pleading guilty to unlawful imprisonment.

The father accused of taking part in a beating at the Word of Life Church that left one of his sons dead and another injured has pleaded guilty to lesser charges and will not stand trial.

Bruce Leonard pleaded guilty to charges of first-degree and second-degree assault Wednesday morning, after appearing in Oneida County Court to consider a plea offer for the charges he faced in the death of his son Lucas Leonard and beating of his other son Christopher last fall. The plea was accepted by Judge Michael Dwyer.

The two charges carry a sentence of 15-16 years in state prison, which will be served concurrently according to Judge Dwyer. Leonard will also be required to state his role in the beatings and testify against the other defendants in the Word of Life case.

UPDATE::  Jewish ‘cult’ members now facing lesser charges in alleged kidnap plot 

Alleged members of the extremist Jewish group Lev Tahor are now facing lesser charges in the alleged kidnapping two Orthodox children from their mother in New York last year, according to an indictment unsealed this week.

The defendants were initially hit with federal kidnapping charges, which carry a ten-year mandatory minimum sentence.

But the new indictment shows that five men — Nachman Helbrans, Mayer Rosner, Aaron Rosner, Jacob Rosner and Matitya Moshe Malka — face just three counts of international parental kidnapping, which has a three-year maximum sentence, along with a related conspiracy charge.

Prosecutors allege the members of Lev Tahor, which translates to “Pure Heart” in Hebrew, kidnapped Yante Teller, 14, and Chaim Teller, 12, in December by disguising them and flying them out of an airport in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

Several leaders of the Lev Tahor Cult have just been taken into police custody, YWN has learned exclusively.

They were apprehended in Mexico, in a joint operation between Interpol and the FBI. Police raided two out of three Lev Tahor owned properties in the country in the middle of the night.

Additionally, as YWN has previously reported, there are a few families of Guatemalans that became Geirim through Lev Tahor but eventually left the cult after learning first hand how horrific the lifestyle was. These families remained Frum Yidden and are living in Guatemala City. When police made the arrests in Mexico, a young child from one of these families was found to be in the Lev Tahor “safe house” in Mexico. This child has now been reunited with his mother in Guatemala.

New businesses in South Bend are usually met with great enthusiasm, but a recently erected sign announcing a new “Yellow Deli” has caused controversy among some in North Pacific County.

A photo of the deli’s swirling yellow logo was posted on Facebook within days of it appearing alongside U.S. Highway 101. The poster and subsequent sharers on social media identified the Yellow Deli as one of many, all of which belong to a religious group called the Twelve Tribes.

Growing awareness of the group’s plans to open a business in South Bend has generated intense interest. A local woman’s July 9 Facebook posting regarding Yellow Deli and Twelve Tribes was up to 329 comments and 37 shares by noon July 16. The tenor of comments ranges from hostility and calls for a boycott to defenses of their choice to live how they choose, so long as laws are obeyed.

The final chapter of a woman's trial involving murder, aliens, and an online cult ended Monday in Monroe County Court.

Barbara Rogers was sentenced to 15 to 40 years behind bars for the murder of her boyfriend Steven Mineo in 2017.

"We are most likely going to be appealing it. It was very unfair," Roger said on Monday.

A murder trial is underway in Monroe County for a woman accused of shooting her boyfriend.

Barbara Rogers entered the Monroe County Courthouse Monday morning for her trial in the death of Stephen Mineo.

Police say Rogers shot Mineo in the head at a home near Tobyhanna in July of 2017.


According to investigators, Rogers and Mineo belonged to "Sherry Shriner," an online cult centered on aliens and the end of the world.

Rogers claims the cult turned against her and Mineo, and because of those problems, Mineo wanted her to kill him.

A member of a secretive North Carolina church pleaded guilty Friday to taking part in an unemployment fraud scheme benefiting businesses with ties to the congregation.


Diane McKinny appeared before a federal judge and admitted to a count of making a fraudulent claim for unemployment benefits, according to court filings. The charge carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison. The online docket didn’t immediately list a date for sentencing.


McKinny was the fourth person to plead guilty as part of an investigation into the scheme involving multiple businesses linked to Word of Faith Fellowship in Spindale.


Her employer Kent Covington, who was also a Word of Faith minister, was sentenced last month to 34 months in prison on a charge of conspiracy to commit mail fraud. Two others listed on a church website as ministers have been sentenced to probation after admitting fraud at a podiatry clinic.

Marion Kent Covington is a minister at the Word of Faith Fellowship in Spindale. He was sentenced Thursday in U.S. District Court in Asheville on one count of conspiracy to commit mail fraud.

The development follows an investigation by The Associated Press that documented claims of fraud and abuse at the church.

The leader of a secretive church in North Carolina has been named in federal court records as someone who “promoted” an unemployment fraud scheme involving businesses owned by members of her congregation.

Jane Whaley, leader of the Word of Faith Fellowship, was named in a document filed Thursday in U.S. District Court in Asheville that describes a fraud conspiracy charge faced by one of her trusted advisers, Kent Covington.

In a 2017 investigation into claims of physical and emotional abuse at the church in Spindale, The Associated Press reported that authorities were looking into the unemployment claims of congregants and their businesses.

Whaley was named in a document that describes the fraud conspiracy charge faced by Covington, a church minister. His lawyer, Stephen Cash, said his client was expected to plead guilty in the case next week.

Dr. Jerry Gross, 72, and his son, Jason Lee Gross, 51, pleaded guilty to one count each of wire fraud, which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. They were charged earlier in May. Both men are pictured on the Word of Faith Fellowship's website under a section for pastors and ministers, though the church was not mentioned during the hearing.

Other than the men's spouses, no church members attended Friday's hearing in federal court in Asheville.

Jerry Gross owned the Foot & Ankle Center of the Carolinas in Forest City, North Carolina. His son worked there, managing business operations, including payroll and personnel decisions, according to court records.

As part of his plea deal, Jerry Gross agreed to cooperate with the government. The criminal investigation into Word of Faith is ongoing. Former church member John Huddle of Marion said Friday he was interviewed several months ago by state criminal investigators and U.S. Department of Homeland Security agents. He said he was asked not to discuss the topic of his interview.

UPDATE:: Utah drops its investigation into FLDS food stamp fraud

The state of Utah has dropped its investigation into food stamp fraud involving members of the Fundamentalist LDS Church.

Utah's Department of Workforce Services confirmed to FOX 13 it had ended the investigation, deciding to not pursue any action against rank-and-file members of the polygamous church who may have been caught up in what became the nation's biggest welfare abuse case.

"As we’ve gotten that evidence back from our federal partners, there is not enough evidence to pursue any individuals," said Nate McDonald, assistant deputy director of DWS. "So at this point, there’s no further action we’re taking any action against any individuals."

A former polygamous sect leader was sentenced Wednesday to nearly five years in prison for his role in carrying out an elaborate food stamp fraud scheme and for escaping home confinement while awaiting trial.

The sentencing of Lyle Jeffs closes the book on a major government bust that took several years to investigate, culminating in February 2016 with fraud and money laundering charges against him and 10 other group members.

Lyle Jeffs was accused of being the ring-leader of a scheme that diverted some $11 million in food-stamp benefits to a communal storehouse and front companies over several years.

U.S. District Judge Ted Stewart said during a hearing in Salt Lake City that Lyle Jeffs deserved the 57-month prison sentence because his behavior showed he doesn't respect U.S. laws and puts his allegiance to his brother and the sect's imprisoned prophet, Warren Jeffs, above everything else.

A federal judge on Wednesday ruled on the most contentious issue in the upcoming food-stamp fraud trial of former polygamous sect leader Lyle Jeffs — what the law says. 

Judge Ted Stewart, in a written ruling, said the jury will be told that only people authorized to receive benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) may use those benefits to purchase food. 

However, there is no prohibition on donating that food once it’s purchased, Stewart ruled, and he will not tell the jury otherwise. 

A polygamous leader who was captured nearly a year after escaping home confinement on federal food-stamp fraud allegations pleaded not guilty Monday to new charges from his time on the run.

Lyle Jeffs faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted on a felony charge connected to being a fugitive. It is on top of charges in a multimillion-dollar food-stamp scheme that he is accused of helping orchestrate in a polygamous community on the Arizona-Utah border.

A Colleton County minister accused of sexually assaulting former church members denies the accusations against him in his first on-camera interview since his arrest in January 2018.

The Rev. Ralph Stair, who oversees Overcomer Ministry on Highway 61 in Canadys, agreed to be interviewed in May for a documentary that profiles one of his former church members.

The documentary, called “When God Comes,” is being produced by New York City photojournalist Andrew Theodorakis. The movie is centered on former church member and rapper Craig Mack, who died in March 2018.

Stair is charged with sexually assaulting four former female members of Overcomer Ministry. He was arrested after a Live 5 News investigation into the ministry that included interviews with some of his accusers.

The affidavit in Christyne's case describes her inaction.

When her daughter told her about the assault, Christyne told her that she would, "take care of it, and if (Stair) did anything wrong, then God will punish him," the affidavit said.

Eric learned about the assault in September and denied social workers and Dorchester County sheriff's deputies access to his daughter on Sept. 22, the affidavit said. The next day, Natosha's older sister took her from the home.

A South Carolina man who has been previously accused of sexual misconduct and of leading a cult in Colleton County was arrested Monday.

Ralph Gordon Stair, 84, was arrested by the Colleton County Sheriff’s Department and the State Law Enforcement Division on charges of assault with intent to commit first-degree criminal sexual conduct, third-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor, kidnapping, first-degree burglary, second-degree burglary and three counts of criminal sexual conduct, according to a news release by the sheriff’s department.

Stair, the founder of Overcomer Ministry in Colleton County, has been the subject of a state and federal criminal investigation since October, the Post and Courier reported.

TV actress Allison Mack pleaded guilty Monday to charges she was involved in a scheme to turn women into sex slaves for the spiritual leader of a cult-like upstate New York group, a development that came on the same day jury selection began for a federal trial in the case.

Mack, 36, wept as she admitted her crimes and apologized to the women who prosecutors say were exploited by Keith Raniere and the purported self-help group called NXIVM.

"I believed Keith Raniere's intentions were to help people, and I was wrong," Mack told a Brooklyn judge.

Mack - best known for her role as a young Superman's close friend on the series "Smallville" - said that after months of reflection since her arrest, "I know I can and will be a better person."

Lauren Salzman, the daughter of NXIVM President Nancy Salzman, quietly pleaded guilty earlier this week to two felony charges in connection with the Justice Department's criminal prosecution of the Colonie-based organization's leaders.

Salzman, 42, who owns a residence in Halfmoon, pleaded guilty to racketeering and racketeering conspiracy during an unannounced court appearance Monday before U.S. District Court Judge Nicholas Garaufis, according to court documents.

The transcript of her plea hearing was sealed and no one from the public attended, although it took place in open court. The government late Thursday asked the judge to release a transcript of the proceeding, but to keep a portion of it under seal. Their reasons for making that request were also filed under seal, indicating Salzman may have agreed to cooperate in the investigation when she pleaded guilty.

The second-highest ranking member of a self-help group accused of sex trafficking and racketeering has pleaded guilty to one count of racketeering conspiracy. Nancy Salzman admitted to conspiring to commit identity theft and editing a video submitted as court evidence.

Salzman told a Brooklyn courtroom that some of the things she did as president of NXIVM were not only wrong, but criminal. “If I could go back and change things, I would. But I can’t,” she said. She could face years of prison time at a July sentencing hearing.

Salzman’s guilty plea is the first conviction in a high-profile criminal case that could break new legal ground on cults, pyramid schemes and consent. The most serious charges, sex trafficking and forced labour, are connected to a secret women-only empowerment group the feds say was created to groom sexual partners for NXIVM’s leader, Keith Raniere.

A date has been set for the trial in the NXIVM case.

According to federal court documents, opening statements are scheduled to begin March 18, 2019.

UPDATE:: Killer who claimed Scientology defense sentenced to death by Arizona jury

The man who tried and failed to convince jurors that his upbringing as a Scientologist helped rationalize why he bludgeoned two people to death and set their bodies on fire was sentenced Wednesday to death by a Prescott jury.

The jury announced its verdict of death shortly after noon, according to a public information officer for the Yavapai County Superior Court.

He stands accused of using a hatchet to bludgeon his sister-in-law and her boyfriend to death and setting the house on fire to destroy any evidence. In a bid to escape the death penalty, he is trying a novel defense:

Kenneth Wayne Thompson is not arguing that Scientology turned him violent in March 2012. But he is saying his belief in the religion of Scientology helps explain his actions. In particular, he says, his devotion to Scientology's tenets led him on a 24-hour plus drive from his home in rural Missouri to the eventual murder scene in Arizona.

Prosecutors say the marathon drive helps show Thompson committed the crimes with premeditation, an element of the first-degree murder convictions they are seeking. On each, the state of Arizona will ask for the death penalty.

U.S. District Judge Julie Robinson found that members of the group formerly known as the United Nation of Islam had fraudulently transferred assets to non-profit groups they created in order to prevent Kendra Ross, the woman who obtained the judgment, from collecting the money.

A woman who spent 10 years toiling without pay for a Kansas City, Kan., religious group has won an $8 million judgment against the group and its leader.

U.S. District Judge Daniel Crabtree issued a 57-page ruling Wednesday, finding that Kendra Ross was the victim of human trafficking at the hands of Royall Jenkins and his group, which calls itself The Value Creators.

Crabtree, who referred to the group as a cult, found that Ross was subjected to physical and emotional abuse and years of "humiliating and degrading treatment."

The judge ruled that she was entitled to damages for pain and emotional distress. He also imposed punitive damages.

A woman who said she was forced to work without pay for a decade — beginning when she was 11 — is suing the spiritual leader of a group she describes as a cult based in Kansas City, Kan.

Kendra Ross, who is now 26, alleges that from the age of 11 until 2012, when she “gathered her courage and strength to escape,” she was the victim of human trafficking at the hands of Royall Jenkins and his organization, The Value Creators.

The group, formerly known as the United Nation of Islam, forced Ross to work in restaurants and as a maid, cook and childcare provider in several cities, including Kansas City, Kan., Atlanta, Dayton, Ohio, and New York, the suit alleges.

The suit, filed in U.S. District Court in Kansas City, Kan., estimates that Ross performed more than 40,000 hours of uncompensated labor for the group.

Grieving relatives say religious beliefs may have compelled a mother and her teenage daughter to allegedly massacre five of their family members — including three children — inside a suburban Pennsylvania apartment.

Damon Decree, Sr., the ex-husband of suspect Shana Decree, 45, and the father of suspect Dominique Decree, 19, told WPVI that both women had been “talking about demons being all around them.”

Decree said he believes the mother and daughter — charged Monday with murdering Shana’s two children, Naa’Irah Smith, 25, and Damon Decree Jr., 13, along with her sister, Jamilla Campbell, 42, and Campbell’s 9-year-old twin daughters, Imani and Erika Allen — may have been indoctrinated into an unspecified online religious group.

“Apparently, they had dissected into some type of cult that they materialized online,” he said. “I don’t know how or what kind of cult.”

Destiny Harris, the half-sister of the twin victims, also told WPVI the family had been “going through something religiously and they decided to drag the kids into it.”

Former Magnolia pastor sentenced to 75 years for sexual assault of child - Houston Chronicle

A former Magnolia-area pastor was sentenced to 75 years in prison after sexually assaulting a teen who lived in his home, according to the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office.

Ronald Wayne Mitchell, 59, was found guilty on five charges of sexual assault of a child, a second-degree felony. He received 15 years for each charge on Tuesday, all stacked to a total 75 years in a Texas Department of Criminal Justice facility.

Members of the church moved in with Mitchell, and their children were homeschooled. A search of the residence found that up to seven families lived there, Hebert said.

The victim told her mother about the abuse in October 2016, later telling investigators that she was fondled and raped from 2015 to 2016.  She was 15 at the time.

The pastor told the teenager that if she ever told anyone about the abuse, that “she would be killed by God and it would be her fault that ‘the movement’ was destroyed,” according to the district attorney’s office.

Two Escapees From Lev Tahor KIDNAPPED in the Catskills ON SHABBOS | Yeshiva World News

Lev Tahor, initially based in Canada, practices an extreme form of Orthodox Judaism. Its members fled to Guatemala claiming persecution by Canadian authorities that accused the sect of child abuse and neglect.  The group shuns technology and its female members wear black robes from head to toe, leaving only their faces exposed. It also rejects the State of Israel, saying the Jewish nation can only be restored by God, not humankind.

Authorities in Upstate New York are currently investigating an alleged kidnapping of two of the recent escapees from the Lev Tahor Cult – which occured on Shabbos.

Sources confirm to YWN that two children of the Teller family that recently escaped from the cult in Guatemala were spending Shabbos in the Catskills, when the incident occured.

Our sources tell us that on Shabbos morning, a 14 year-old girl and a 12-year-old boy were discovered missing.

Police were called, and an investigation is underway.


It has been confirmed that the two children were seen entering a vehicle on Friday night (early Shabbos morning) at around 3:32AM.

The family had been spending Shabbos with professional therapists in the Catskills, along with other previous Lev Tahor escapees.

The missing girl was kidnapped several weeks ago as well, but was later found and reunited with her mother.

As YWN has been reporting, the Teller children arrived in the United States last month, following an intense international effort to rescue them from the Cult, currently located in Guatemala.

No science here (Pt 3)

Initially I planned on two chapters per post but length has climbed even for me. I have also realized I am repeating the same information over and over again – wonder why? So here is chapter 6 all by its lonesome.

The medical science community and associated research supports the fact that the occurrence of cancer, disease, and chronic illnesses is largely rooted in the decreased function of the human immune system and specifically related to gut bacteria.

While the role of the immune system is to protect the human body against disease and other foreign bodies it is important to keep in mind that many different parts of the body combine to make up the immune system. IOWs it is not one big ole conglomerate, there are many parts. Jillian makes a very sweeping statement but may ignore the minutiae involved as correlation is not causation.

Simply put, there are at least 80 types of autoimmune diseases. Inflammation is a protective response involving immune cells, blood vessels, and molecular mediators. Cancer is fundamentally a disease of regulation of tissue growth; with only certain mutations leading to cancer whereas the majority of mutations do not. There is no over-arching etiology as Jillian implies.

“Gut bacteria have been found to be involved in many diseases, such as IBD, obesity, diabetes, carcinoma, HIV, and autism. When the gut bacteria undergo some imbalance, several diseases may occur. Immunoregulatory activity is the main function of gut bacteria in the pathogenesis of these diseases.” [Emphasis mine]

So lets take a look at your source,,, Houston we have a problem! Or I should say some major concerns that bear investigating further.

There is no such things as “leaky gut” - the primary issue behind gut dysbiosis causing autism. "[v]irtually no physician who has an understanding of the gastrointestinal physiology gives the disease credence because of an almost complete lack of supporting basic science and few therapeutic clinical trials showing no effect."

As Dr Harriet Hall notes, citing Bischoff et al, “[i]ntestinal permeability is a real thing, but according to this review article 'these terms are poorly defined, their assessment is a matter of debate, and their clinical significance is not clearly established.' Leaky gut syndrome, on the other hand, is a fad diagnosis not accepted by mainstream medicine.”

Herein, this review summarizes and highlights the roles and potential mechanisms of gut bacteria in human health and diseases. Understanding of the relationship between gut bacteria and human health can be helpful for targeting new probiotic treatments and novel strategies in treating and managing a wide variety of human diseases. Issue number two, and we are not even out of the introduction yet,

When you give probiotics to normal humans you are introducing, relative to the number and quantity of bacteria that are already there, a small amount of foreign bacteria. Continuing our metaphor, it is like trying to put a putting green in an Amazonian rain forest. For normal people, it makes no microbiologic sense to take probiotics. 

While I read the entire paper, I will readily admit I did not digest it fully; not enough time. BUT, my point being, this is Jillian's only citation for a topic that needs a thorough discussion. Her presentation opens the door for more questions than she provides answers for. Furthermore her own citation clearly states, “further studies should be carried out.”

 

The protocol provides for the possible repair of these deficiencies through recommended dietary changes, removal of toxins, and the infusion of natural probiotics, bio-available nutrition, and electrolytes. The foundation for the protocol and why it works is rooted in the science of what elements make up the human body.

Epperly talks of probiotics being the answer to everything, it's not so simple. To borrow from Mark Crislip, “Already there is the assumption, unchallenged, that there is an issue in people between good and bad bacteria that is affecting health. And which people? Which bacteria? Under what circumstances? The importance of understanding which patient populations may benefit from an intervention is key.” 

Crislip continues,

If you are worried about your normal gut bacteria, be reassured. We are always consuming fecal flora in the food you eat and the water you drink. The food, your spouse, and the world, is covered in a thin patina of gastrointestinal bacteria, so you are always repleting your bacterial flora orally. Bon appetite! Families tend have similar bacterial strains. My gut flora more closely resemble my parents’ than my wife’s, suggesting there may be a genetic predisposition for which strains of bacteria make up your gut. When you give probiotics to normal humans you are introducing, relative to the number and quantity of bacteria that are already there, a small amount of foreign bacteria. What the body is comprised of has no bearing on nutritional requirements. There is overlap between the suggested essential nutrients and what the body is comprised of, but no relation. One is biochemistry the other is nutrition, two distinct fields. Most living things are carbon based on an elemental level. So are coal, fuel and diamonds but we don’t eat those things do we? As her garlic example in the previous post highlights, Jillian has way too much time on her hands to be studying garlic that intensely.

The protocol includes a specific fresh food diet and a fermented juice recipe (Jilly Juice) that includes cabbage or kale, a mineral based (Pink Himalayan) salt, and water. Each of these components has a function in the healing process. The combination of cabbage or kale and the diet on the protocol meets the needs of the human body because it closely matches all 12 of the top nutrients that it is comprised of. Cabbage and kale provide the nutritional foundation of the protocol because of all the cruciferous vegetables, there provide a high range of vitamin and mineral elements needed for a healthy, smooth running body.

 

I'm not going to delve into the diet aspect beyond what I need to. Basically what Jillian advocates is a plant based semi-raw diet. The only animal protein is chicken or egg. It is very restrictive but confusing as well due to the, “do as I say, not as I do mentality.” IOWs what she spouts on Facebook contradicts her book – ie. vegalitarianism and veganism.

In her book, page 25 she states,

  

Jillian only added chicken as an afterthought for non-vegetarians/non-vegans, yet lambastes anyone who advocates for vegatarianism/veganism on her FB page.

Let's go back to the Pink Himalayan Salt for a moment, since she mentions it,,,

If you remember, Jillian ascribes magical superpower the PHS.  In some cases she states it is due to the “84 trace minerals” present. In September,

she made a post blasting the trace minerals in garlic calling them heavy metals citing this paper as source, Studies on the contents of twenty elements in different parts of garlic byusing ICP-OES, AAS and AFS combined with microwave decompositionmethod].  I mentioned this paper in my last post noting it was an abstract only as the paper is in Chinese. IOWs there is no fucking way Jillian read this paper.

According to source these are the trace minerals present in garlic:: Al, As, B, Ca, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, P, Pb, S, Se, Sr and Zn. All are present in PHS. Please explain to me how Epperly can justify the use of PHS when it contains the same elements present in garlic? As noted by a critic, “she's [Jillian] intellectually dishonest...and scientifically illiterate,,, She relies on people being too lazy to actually read what she posts.”

Like anything Jillian disagrees with, she will block you if you try can counter her stupidity.

Just to solidify a point, Epperly is clueless and her information should be disregarded,,

This is her attempt at supporting her contention that “Allium Sativum is garlic and onions.. very very very highly poisonous and full of heavy metals.. look at the symbols in the document enclosed.” (Remember how she determines if something is OK to eat.) 

  

For reference here are the documents she includes Chemical elements listed by symbol and Elemental Composition of the Human Body. What we are specifically interested in is this paper she sources, Comparative evaluation of the mineral profile and other selected components ofonion and garlic.

From the abstract,

The comprehensive mineral profile of garlic and onion samples obtained in this work is an information that could sensitize people on their need for more consumption. This can be a good opportunity to enhance micronutrient supply of the diet of low income earners which form majority of the society.

From the conclusion, 

 

As it has been shown that the Allium spp have potassium in abundance with very low content of sodium. This research finding could be useful to develop a food-based strategy to increase the bioavailability of trace minerals and therefore contributes to the benefit of human health. Smaller quantity of garlic could conveniently be used to flavour foods to obtain the similar nutritional benefit of some components that is obtained when higher quantity of onion cultivars is used. This is important since the current consumers’ tendency is towards foods with beneficial attributes for health and good organoleptic characteristics. Regular inclusion of Allium spp in meals, especially in powdery form can also be a good opportunity to enhance micronutrient supply of the diet of low income earners which form majority of the society.

There is NO mention of “[o]nions and garlic are poisonous when used as a supplement or used IN LARGE amounts,” as Jillian asserts. Jillian has no understanding or comprehension in regards to what she reads. This paper in no way supports her notion and as I noted above, garlic contains the same trace elements as PHS.

 

There is so much I could write, but I believe you my readers are beginning to get the picture, Epperly has no science. The science she does cite does not even support her statements.

If this material is what she submitted to the Ohio AOG or the FTC, I would like to know on what grounds she is still able to operate. I suspect it is what Lee Lemon and Paulogia discuss in this video clip.

  

The clip with my concerns regarding JE and her right to free speech in selling her book of misinformation. Paul explains it well,,, the clips starts at 35:09-42:09 with Paul's contribution coming at 39:39 and he references Eric Hovind's selling of B-17 "You can provide a fraudulent book about how eating apricot pits cure cancer and you can sell such apricot seeds but you cant do both."

I lied about it being the end of post as some curious information has come to my attention. Jillian doesn't seem to make a big fuss concerning water sources. But she does concerning support for an other woo-meisters touting a competing programs. (I will be addressing the pH water scam at a later date. For your viewing pleasure. No science here (Pt 2)

I have been having a hella time getting past this chapter as there is so much misinformation in five paragraphs. The 10:1 ratio has reared its ugly head. Ten times the information is needed to correct the information presented. 

Epperly obviously has no understanding of the information she accumulates, retaining only what agrees with her agenda. There is a kernel of truth to what Jillian states but she makes leaps in logic that are not supported. For example, “most bodies naturally gravitate towards, or crave, specific elements or minerals when they are deficient.”

While it has been studied in animals, there are too many factors that influence food choices. The overlap in humans, many nutrients do not have distinctly identifiable tastes. (Only two specific appetites - besides salt and sugar - for iron and calcium, have been identified with experimental rigor so far.) Other appetites are thus currently classified as “learned appetites, which are not innate appetites that are triggered automatically in the absence of certain nutrients, but learned behaviours, aversions to or preferences for certain foods as they become associated with experiences of malnutrition and illness." 

 

BUT then Jillian doubles down on the notion that water is the “balancing force” of salt based on the elements that comprise the makeup of the human body. As I have stated previously, drinking water as a “balancing force” to salt is a false notion; water does not replace the electrolytes lost by "waterfalls". Furthermore, the trace minerals in the PHS are at too low of a concentration to make a positive or negative impact. (Milk is actually a better choice, not water.) While cabbage is good for you, it is not a panacea.

Our bodies require sodium but not at the level she is suggesting. Epperly's lack of grasping the role of water intake and kidney function in regulating homeostasis is appalling as she is encouraging a large consumption of liquid in a very short time. Kidneys can get rid of via urine; 0.8-1 gallons (3-4 liters) of water in a short amount of time. Kidneys can eliminate about 5.3-7.4 gallons (20-28 liters) of water a day, but they can't get rid of more than 27-33 ounces (0.8-1.0 liters) per hour.

I have read and experienced that most bodies naturally gravitate towards, or crave, specific elements or minerals when they are deficient. For example, when you eat a salty snack, what is the body’s natural inclination to do? The body sends a “I’m thirsty” message to your brain, telling you to drink water to offset the salt exposure. That is called a voluntary/involuntary balancing force because your body involuntarily told you to drink water and you voluntarily drank water, avoiding hypernatremia (too much salt in the body).

A craving for something salty or sweet does not make for a necessity as a craving is a feeling or sensation; an urge, compulsion or drive. We tend to crave things that make us feel better. Cravings connect a specific stimulus with a specific response; remember Pavlov’s dog? 

While there is a physiological reaction to a craving, there is no physiological need as a craving will pass in 3-5 minutes. We crave specific foods because they taste better than other foods. We might enjoy them for that reason, but we crave them because they do something for us physiologically that the brain likes. We tend to develop cravings for foods that help us feel better however temporarily. 

The one caveat I would throw at this, food cravings aka selective hunger are caused by the regions of the brain that are responsible for memory, pleasure, and reward. And there very well may be an evolutionary advantage to cravings, but to state “I'm thirsty” after eating a salty snack does not make it a balancing force.

Humans have been able to survive times of famine and hardship throughout history due largely to our ability to store excess calories, consumed during times of plenty, as body fat. At some level, our bodies may be programmed to crave foods high in calories. 

Again Jillian doubles down using her ill-informed example of normal saline solution in the hospital setting. As satetd before, a 0.9% saline solution is used for re-hydration purposes. Jilly Juice comes in at 2.3%-2.8% salinity (just below salt water at 3.0%). A HUGE difference. 

Normal saline is as close to blood serum as one can get without being blood serum. NS is used frequently in intravenous drips (IVs) for patients who cannot take fluids orally and have developed or are in danger of developing dehydration or hypovolemia. . NS is typically the first fluid used when hypovolemia is severe enough to threaten the adequacy of blood circulation, and has long been believed to be the safest fluid to give quickly in large volumes. However, it is now known that rapid infusion of NS can cause metabolic acidosis.

As I figured, Jillian addresses homeostasis in chapter five. There is so much wrong with what she presents that I may have to approach this line by line. The 12 different systems of the human body bullshit, I am going to ignore for the moment. As you will see, her understanding of homeostasis is so wrong that it makes all other information moot.

Each system must be able to cross functionally communicate to elicit a certain outcome based upon the purpose of each system. The energy needed for each system to communicate to each other is called bioelectricity that is powered by electrolytes, a combination of salt and water.

As noted previously, Epperly in her use of the term “energy”, seems to imply the human body is like an electric power plant. There is a differential across cell membranes, but it is not as simple as she makes it out to be.  Simply put, homeostasis the tendency to maintain a stable, relatively constant internal environment while continuously interacting with and adjusting to changes originating within or outside the system. There are thousands of homeostatic systems within the body. Some of these systems operate within the cell and others operate within organs to control the complex interrelationships among the various organs.

The article cited for this statement, Tweaking the Tiny Electrical Charges Inside Cells Can Fight Infection discusses how manipulating the electrical charge of a cell(s) can increase an organism’s ability to fight infection. The organism in question, a tadpole embryo. (Actual paper referred to by Matchar.) The article cited in no way supports her notion that a daily mega-dose of salt is some sort of panacea to all that ails the human body.

Homeostasis is “from the Greek words for “same” and “steady,” refers to any process that living things use to actively maintain fairly stable conditions necessary for survival.”

Just NO!! adaptation is when the body finds a way to function normally despite the fact that homeostasis is not or can not be restored.

The usual means of maintaining homeostasis is a general mechanism called a negative feedback loop. The body senses an internal change and activates mechanisms that reverse, or negate, that change. An example of negative feedback is body temperature regulation. Opposite that is the positive feedback loop, a process in which the body senses a change and activates mechanisms that accelerate or increase that change. An example of its beneficial effect is seen in blood clotting.  

Both these examples are temporary and not meant to become the “new normal”. Homeostasis enables all living organisms to maintain internal stability in spite of a ceaselessly changing and challenging environment.

People can be mutated or managing an illness and still be in homeostasis as the body adapts to and seeks a normal from whatever it is exposed to.

Explain Type I Diabetes. How can a body that loses the ability to produce insulin be in homeostasis? Without the ability to secrete insulin, an individual with Type I Diabetes will develop diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). DKA is a life-threatening illness, and death can result in a matter of hours - unless insulin is provided to restore homeostasis.

  

No matter what level of homeostasis you are in, an interruption of homeostasis, (Homeostasis Interruptus) [NO such word], can be triggered by an under or over abundance of certain element. This alerts the body that it is off balance and the body systems will work toward getting it back to normal. A chronic imbalance of elements, minerals, and nutrients within the body has a tendency to create an environment for cancer, disease and chronic illness. That is why it is important to know what basic elements make up the foods you intake. So, they can match the elemental needs of your body.

There is no “level of homeostasis” as there are thousands of homeostatic systems within the body,

When the cells in your body do not work correctly, homeostatic balance is disrupted. Homeostatic imbalance may lead to a state of disease. Disease and cellular malfunction can be caused in two basic ways: by deficiency (cells not getting all they need) or toxicity (cells being poisoned by things they do not need). When homeostasis is interrupted, your body can correct or worsen the problem, based on certain influences. In addition to inherited (genetic) influences, there are external influences that are based on lifestyle choices and environmental exposure. These factors together influence the body’s ability to maintain homeostatic balance. 

 

While I am diabetic (Type 2), for the most part my body seems to function properly other than insulin production. It's why I have to take medication. Unchecked diabetes can impact other organs, such as kidneys, I have so far managed to avoid further complications by altering external factors that can be controlled.

Why are you insisting on re-creating the wheel? “That is why it is important to know what basic elements make up the foods you intake. So, they can match the elemental needs of your body.” What you are alluding to is the role of micro and macro nutrients. The FDA has set a reference daily intake for 12 minerals (calcium, iron, phosphorous, iodine, magnesium, zinc, selenium, copper, manganese, chromium, molybdenum and chloride). Sodium and potassium also have recommended levels, but they are treated separately. Sulfur, silicon, boron, nickel, vanadium and lead, also may play a biological role but are not classified as essential. 

To find the elemental composition of certain foods, you must first find it’s food classification, also known as Phylum.

One more step is needed to find the basic elemental components of that phylum. I looked up the phylum name of garlic, (Google works well), and found that it belongs to the classification, Allium Sativum.

Garlic (Allium sativum) is a species in the onion genus, Allium.

Here are the ingredients, in order of most to least; Aluminum, arsenic, boron, calcium, cadmium, copper, iron, mercury, potassium, magnesium, manganese, sodium nickel, phosphorus, lead, sulfur, selenium, strontium, and zirconium.

Sooooooo,,, you found a PubMed abstract that list the elements present in garlic. Since the actual paper is written in Chinese, I know it wasn't read. But, what you failed to notice, the list of elements was alphabetical by the nomenclature of the Periodic Table. The abstract in no way states “in order of most to least”.

The garlic plants sampled in the suburbs of Suzhou were rinsed thoroughly with deionized water, and divided into six different parts: root, low stem, middle stem, high stem, tender leaves and old leaves. In referencing back to the elemental composition of the body, you can see that aluminum, arsenic and boron, the major elements in garlic, are needed in only needed in trace amounts.

No where in the abstract you cite does it state, “aluminum, arsenic and boron, the major elements in garlic”.

Therefore, an upset to homeostasis will occur when too much garlic is introduced to the human body.

Define “too much garlic”? What is your standard?

I personally had too much garlic during a meal and my body reacted with a stomach ache. Eating too much garlic overdosed my body on garlic and created an imbalance in my body. I triggered an event that upset my homeostasis. My resulting symptom was a stomach ache.

So, don't eat garlic, it's that simple. What you demonstrate is a hypersensitivity to garlic, “On presentation to her GP the next day, she was told she had a classic case of liver poisoning, caused probably by an over-sensitivity to garlic.” As the article notes, “[p]eople can develop allergies to any food and even water.” So your reaction is not unusual. “The key to allergies and adverse reaction to foods is the amount ingested.”

If you have diabetes for example, your body’s equilibrium is off relative to how you felt like physically before you were afflicted, and then you feel sick. Homeostasis was upset. When you finally find a way to get symptoms under control, your body will balance - go into homeostasis at that level - until another reactive or proactive event occurs.

As one with diabetes, I find this ludicrous. My body has ceased producing insulin at the proper levels. I therefore have to take medication that that “replaces” the activity of insulin and the resulting biochemical mumbo-jumbo that occurs in my body. I am not in homeostasis, I am (I hope, as I am a terrible patient) in an artificially induced balance. My body has nothing to do with this balance, as it is broken.

As an aside::  I use my diabetes as an example due to statements such as this by Jillian,

She has no fucking clue what she speaks about.  Or I should say no concern. While DKA can and will kill in a "short" amount of time, so could Vit D deficiency.  Taking medication or supplements for a medical necessity is not drug addiction.  Telling people, your minions, that medication or medically prescribed supplementation it is drug addiction, is irresponsible.

People can be mutated or managing an illness and still be in homeostasis as the body adapts and seeks a normal from whatever elements it is exposed to. No matter what level of homeostasis you are in, an interruption will occur when you are exposed to an over or under abundance of either a nutrition or toxin. As a result, the body will signal that the immune system has been activated by this interruption. These body signals are commonly called symptoms. The type and severity will be based upon the context and amount of the exposure.

 

I am not adapting. As I stated previously (I feel like a broken record), adaptation is when the body finds a way to function normally despite the fact that homeostasis is not or can not be restored. Without medication I will die. My new normal is shoving pills down my throat to survive. The same goes for my HBP, without medication, my BP will sky rocket and kill me.

Again, there are no levels of homeostasis. You're either in homeostasis or your not. The body always seeks homeostasis. (Over simplified)

The next two paragraphs make no sense to me as there is no such thing as “homeostasis Interuptus”. It is a made up term with no meaning outside of Jillian's agenda. If one does a search, her website is the ONLY site that appears using that term. Be that as it may, because here again, Epperly's book contradicts what she states on Facebook.

Concerning Epperly's discussion of “homeostatsis interuptus”, throughout her discussion she implies that “homeostasis interuptus” is a bad thing,

In this way, nutrition and toxins both work as a stimulus that interrupts homeostasis and cause symptoms. These outward symptoms are indicators that your immune and other systems have been activated and are working to process and balance the levels of your body elements. The key difference is however, is that you can die from a toxin but not a massive amount of good nutrition, even if it does “shock” the system initially.

So which is it?

This is what I mean concerning Jillian creating her own meanings and definitions. This is probably the best example I’ve seen of the way she mixes unrelated terms in a way that makes it quite clear she does not know what any of them actually mean. As noted by one critic, “And i thought she was all about interrupting homeostasis a while back? Something about dying and needing to interrupt the death homeostasis yadda yadda yadda... Because if you didn't upset menopause homeostasis you were on the death trajectory.”

What is so disappointing in this chapter is the misrepresentation of sources cited by Jillian. Ignoring her lack of primary sources, she makes a mockery of the actual research being done in an attempt to support her bogus ideas. Her want for legitimacy is a disgrace to the years dedicated by licensed medical practitioners, actual scientists and researcher.
