A Liberty University adjunct faculty member has been indicted on six charges of filming and photographing minors in a state of undress.

David DeHaven, who lives in Fincastle, was arrested Aug. 7 after a Botetourt County grand jury indicted him. He is scheduled for trial Dec. 17.

 DeHaven, 49, taught for Liberty University Online as an adjunct instructor of business. Scott Lamb, senior vice president of communications at Liberty University, said DeHaven has been suspended pending the outcome of the charges. DeHaven also operates D3 Coaching, an executive coaching and strategy consulting business.

Naked Woman Who Broke Into Family’s New Home, Claimed to Be ‘the Devil,’ Arrested and Charged

The Virginia woman who broke into a family’s new home, wearing no clothes and claiming to be the devil, has been arrested and charged with assault and battery, malicious wounding and breaking and entering. The family is still traumatized from the incident as they believe the woman, who seemed “possessed,” wanted to kill them.

The intruder has been identified as Ryan Doss, 29, of North Chesterfield. She is being held in the Chesterfield County Jail and is expected to undergo a mental health evaluation.

The incident took place on the Fourth of July, the first night that the Lewis family was staying in the home. Much to their surprise, they discovered a naked woman with a blue ponytail who refused to leave.

UPDATE::  Former youth pastor sentenced for indecent liberties with a minor 

Jordan Baird, a former youth pastor and aspiring pop star, was sentenced to three years in prison Monday on two counts of taking indecent liberties with a minor while in a supervisory position.

It's the second conviction for Baird, 28, who already served a five-month jail sentence after a 2018 conviction in a similar case.

Baird was indicted last summer on the new charges related to a 2014 incident and pleaded guilty in February. He faced up to five years in prison on each count.

Baird had been charged with two counts of indecent liberty with a child by a custodian, both felonies that carry a maximum of five years in prison.

Baird was later re-arrested, accused of abusing a second teen in that same timeframe. That trial was scheduled to begin on Monday. The young woman's family is also suing Life Church for $21 million.

The church did not go to the police when initial accusations against Baird came to light.

A church spokeswoman says it’s because they were unaware of any physical contact. But others believe it was an effort to protect Baird, who’s the son of the head pastor.

A youth leader and the son of a Manassas megachurch pastor was convicted Thursday of five felony sex crimes with a minor in connection with an inappropriate relationship with a 16-year-old member of the congregation.

A Prince William County Circuit Court jury handed up the verdict late Thursday afternoon after deliberating for eight hours over two days. The jury found Jordan Baird, 26, of Warrenton, guilty of five of seven counts of indecent liberties with a minor by a custodian.

The jury failed to reach a verdict on the charge of using electronic means to commit a sex crime with a minor Baird was facing. It is not yet clear if prosecutors will re-try that charge.

UPDATE::  Virginia pastor gets 8 years for $2 million fraud scheme

A northern Virginia pastor has been sentenced to eight years in prison for a $2 million fraud scheme that victimized members of his congregation and other clergymen.

A jury convicted 54-year-old Terry Millender, the former senior pastor of Victorious Life Church in Alexandria, on multiple fraud counts in a 2017 trial. A jury also convicted his wife, Brenda Millender, on some counts and acquitted her on others before a judge vacated all counts against her.

The Alexandria, Va., pastor told his parishioners they could benefit themselves while doing good if they invested in his Christian-based company lending small amounts of money to entrepreneurs in developing countries.

Instead, a jury in Alexandria federal court agreed that Terry Millender and his wife Brenda Millender, who together ran Victorious Life Church, defrauded their friends and flock out of millions of dollars.

Terry Millender told investors they would make their money back with profit, all while fueling growth in developing countries. But that never happened.

Powhatan County preacher indicted in Jamaican telemarketing scheme targeting seniors

A Powhatan County preacher who authorities suspect of being part of Jamaican Sweepstakes telemarketing scheme responsible for swindling senior citizens across the nation out of at least $153,000 has been indicted on charges of stealing $51,000 from a Portsmouth woman.

The telemarketing scam was used to convince the 86-year-old woman she had won $2.5 million in cash and a 2017 Mercedes GL that she would receive if she paid the taxes and fees in advance, according to court records. The records show she was told to send checks for various amounts to Frederick Shmidt at his address on Huguenot Trail in Powhatan County.

On Tuesday, Feb. 12, a Powhatan grand jury indicted Shmidt, 81, of Powhatan on four felony counts of obtaining money by false pretenses between April and August 2018.

While all four of the charges Shmidt was indicted on are related to the Portsmouth woman’s case, a search warrant affidavit identifies four more individuals who reported being victims of similar crimes involving sending money to cover fees and taxes to Shmidt’s address for winnings they did not receive.

A Liberty University employee charged with attempted murder of his wife was granted $50,000 bond Tuesday and ordered to stay out of Virginia.

Michael James Hiskey, 27, is also charged with abduction and two counts of assault and battery against his wife. Court records show he was arrested Nov. 4 from an incident the same day and was denied bond in Lynchburg Juvenile & Domestic Relations Court last week.

In a statement, LU said Hiskey was suspended from his position as Academic Operations Analyst the day after his arrest and “pending the outcome of this matter.”

Suffolk Police arrested a man on charges including indecent liberties with a child, prosecutors argued in open court that the suspect took the victim to a hotel to have sex.

43-year-old Sean Edward Gaines was arrested Monday following direct indictment on charges including one count of indecent liberties with a child by a custodian and six counts of carnal knowledge of a 14-year-old girl.

Suffolk Police confirmed to News 3 Thursday that Gaines was a pastor at Empowerment Temple, a church on Pruden Blvd.

ADDENDUM::Deacon's Arrest Renews Allegations Against Sterling Church - NBC4 Washington

As I mentioned previously,  this could rival the debauchery of the Sandusky scandal at Penn State University.

A man facing allegations he sexually abused a child in 2003 is connected to a church in Sterling, Virginia, with a controversial history.

Loudoun County deputies arrested 62-year-old Kevin O'Connor, of Sterling, and charged him Thursday with numerous counts of sexual assault and battery as well as taking indecent liberties with a child.

Police said the victim was between 13 and 15 years old at the time of the abuse in 2003.

Former members of Calvary Temple Church said O'Connor was a deacon at the church.

The claims of abuse against Calvary Temple leaders and church members range from verbal to physical and sexual. Former church members are going so far as to call Calvary Temple a cult. Some of the alleged victims first opened up to the Loudoun Times. Since then, several more have come forward.

Deputies arrested a church youth leader on Monday after they investigated allegations that he sexually abused a boy.

The Mathews County Sheriff's Office found out about the accusation in June. Deputies said it involved a 15-year-old boy and Kenneth Scott Marshall, 36. Marshall worked with young people at Cornerstone Fellowship Church. During the course of the investigation, deputies conducted several interviews and collected evidence that they found supported the allegations.

Prosecutors presented evidence to a grand jury on July 16 which led to two indictments against Marshall. The indictments were for Aggravated Sexual Battery of a Minor through the Use of Mental Incapacity or Physical Helplessness and Forcible Sodomy of a Minor through the Use of Mental Incapacity or Physical Helplessness.

UPDATE::  Former Marine colonel sentenced to prison for abusing children

The former commander of the Marine Corps’ Wounded Warrior Regiment was sentenced Tuesday to 18 months in prison for abusing children.

Former Col. Todd Shane Tomko pleaded guilty the same day to three counts of misdemeanor assault and battery at the Virginia Beach Circuit Court in Virginia.

UPDATE::  Hearing for Quincy pastor accused of indecent liberties with child

Attorneys connected to an aggravated sexual battery case against a Quincy pastor and former U.S. Marine appeared in Virginia Beach court this month.

According to court records, Todd Shane Tomko, 55, faces trial in Virginia.

He's charged with aggravated sexual battery with a victim under the age of 13, aggravated sexual battery with a victim between 13 and 15 years of age, indecent liberties with a child under the age of 15, and cruelty/injuries to children.

Quincy police arrested Tomko in connection to those Virginia charges last November.

Quincy police have arrested a Quincy pastor for seven felony warrants out of Virginia Beach, Virginia.

According to the Quincy Police Department, Todd Shane Tomko, 54, is accused of "indecent liberties with child."

He's listed as a pastor of Parkview Church on South 8th Street in Quincy.

Tomko was taken to the Adams County Jail.

The pastor served more than 30 years in the U.S. Marine Corps as Col. T. Shane “Rhino” Tomko.

A Virginia man was sentenced today to 276 months in prison, to be followed by a life term of supervised release, for traveling from the United States to Haiti and engaging in illicit sexual conduct with a minor, Assistant Attorney General Brian A. Benczkowski of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, U.S. Attorney Thomas T. Cullen of the Western District of Virginia and Special Agent in Charge Patrick J. Lechleitner of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Washington, D.C., announced. 

James Daniel Arbaugh, a Mennonite missionary, has been arrested and charged with molesting children while serving in Haiti. On Nov. 21, The Daily News-Record of Harrisonburg, Virginia, reported that Arbaugh was arrested on Nov. 15 by a U.S. Homeland Security special agent. Court records show that Arbaugh, 40, was charged with felony coercion or enticement of a minor. Arbaugh attended Mountain View Mennonite Church in Lyndhurst, Virginia, a former Mennonite Church USA congregation, and was a board member for Walking Together for Christ Haiti.

The criminal complaint, filed with the U.S. District Court in Harrisonburg, states that “Arbaugh reported grooming and/or having sexual contact with approximately 21 males under the age of 18.” Arbaugh disclosed the abuse to a counselor during a Sept. 11 session. In Virginia, health-care providers are mandated to report child abuse to social services. According to the Daily News-Record, social services contacted the Harrisonburg Police Department, who then contacted federal agents.

Arbaugh traveled to Haiti from 2009 to 2015. According to a website where he documented his mission work, Arbaugh was a self-supporting “tentmaker” partnering with Walking Together for Christ in Haiti and involved in “media ministry.” The last post on the site is from July 2.

Virginia authorities say an educator at an evangelical Christian university led by Jerry Falwell Jr. has been charged with taking indecent liberties with a child younger than 15.

News outlets report 63-year-old Liberty University professor Stephen Kilpatrick was arrested Wednesday. He also is charged with using communications systems to facilitate certain offenses involving children.

A task force against child internet crimes says Kilpatrick was arrested after travelling to meet someone who he believed was an underage girl. The school said in an email that Kilpatrick has been suspended from his position as an associate professor of mathematics “pending the outcome of this matter.”

A deputy with the Richmond City Sheriff's Office has been arrested and charged with sex crimes.

Crime Insider sources confirmed 29-year-old Matthew Eli Mellerson is a deputy and also the chaplain at the Richmond Justice Center.

A grand jury on Thursday indicted Mellerson on six counts of carnal knowledge of an inmate and two counts of sexual abusing an inmate.

Henrico School Board member Roscoe D. Cooper III is once again the subject of a criminal court action, but this time the county police are on his side.

The situation may be related to the Coopers’ divorce. Court records show the legal fight went on for two and a half years before a court officially ended their marriage last December.

Last year, during the months leading up to the divorce, Mr. Cooper was arrested several times for traffic offenses, including one for drunken driving and two others for speeding.

Court rejects appeal of former youth pastor convicted in child sex case

A Virginia appeals court has rejected the appeal of a man convicted of using a computer to solicit a minor and taking indecent liberties.

The court this week ruled against Major Lance Hillman of Lynchburg, who is serving a six-year sentence.

Authorities say a 14-year-old girl who attended a church where Hillman was a volunteer youth pastor sought him out for counseling in 2015 because of prior sexual abuse. The two later exchanged nude images of themselves.

UPDATE::  Ex-youth minister admits killing 3, including wife, stepdaughter 

In a hearing to determine if there was probable cause that Gattis killed his wife, Jeanett L. Gattis, 58, and his stepdaughter, Candice L. Kunze, 30, defense attorney John Rockecharlie told the court, “My client admits he was the shooter.”

But Rockecharlie said Gattis advised that “he did it because they were ganging up on him.”

Gattis, 58, a former youth ministry director for Grace Lutheran Church in Chester, is also charged with killing Kunze’s boyfriend, 36-year-old Andrew Buthorn of Olympia, Wash., who had celebrated Thanksgiving with the family.

Because two of the victims were family members, those cases were heard Tuesday in domestic relations court. The case involving Buthorn is scheduled to be heard Wednesday in Chesterfield General District Court.

At the end of Tuesday’s proceeding, Judge J. David Rigler found there was probable cause that Gattis fatally shot his wife and stepdaughter and certified two counts each of first-degree murder and felony use of a firearm to a Chesterfield Circuit Court grand jury. The panel will consider indictments against Gattis on May 21.

Police have arrested a youth pastor for allegedly murdering his family at a home in Chester on Thanksgiving night.

Officers discovered two women and a man shot to death at a home on Dogwood Ridge Court in the Ashley Forrest subdivision around 11:30 p.m.

Officials said the women’s bodies were found inside the home and that the man’s body was found in the front yard.

The victims were identified as 58-year-old Jeanett L. Gattis, 30-year-old Candice L. Kunze and 36-year-old Andrew E. Buthorn.

Former pastor of Wise, VA church charged with sex crimes against

The former pastor of an area church. accused of sex crimes against a child, is being held without bond in Southwest Virginia Regional Jail in Duffield, VA.

Jeff Rolen, campus pastor of Highlands Fellowship in Wise, VA is charged with 10 counts of indecent liberties with a child. The alleged incidents occurred more than 30 years ago.

Investigators say the alleged incidents took place between January 1985 and end of December 1987.

According to indictments obtained by News Channel 11,  if convicted Rolen faces a maximum of 5 years behind bars on each count. News Channel 11 obtained a letter sent to members of Highlands Fellowship.

A former associate minister with the Church of Christ at Mountain View in Frederick County has been indicted on two counts of indecent liberties with a juvenile.

The accused 36-year-old pastor, Brian Dicken, served at the Church of Christ for 14 years, where he conducted services on Sunday nights and provided counseling for members of the congregation.

According to a Frederick County Sheriff’s Office news release, “the charges stemmed from incidents that occurred in December 2014 while Mr. Dicken was providing counseling services to the victim.”

Some said they feared for their family’s safety if the town permitted the practice to go on inside the store. Mullins pointed out at the start of the meeting that he currently legally read tarot cards on the sidewalk in front of his store and could legally perform a reading inside. The only thing he is prohibited from doing, he said, is voicing his interpretation.

“I can do it on the streets and it can be a sideshow, or I can do it inside the building where no one can see,” he said.
